Seriously. I practically have the entirety of humanity's accumulated knowledge accessible on a 5"x2" device in my pocket. Tell me again why i need a 40 lbs, two thousand page book (that gives definitions, etymology, pronunciation and spelling of words in only ONE language) threatening to crush whatever furniture I put it on?

Because when the power goes out, and you need to know when 'discombobulate' was first used in print, by god you'll be glad have it.

...yeah...

I love my reference books. I love having them on hand, with easy flippable pages, but I can completely understand why they'd likely never print it again.

I'm going to miss devoting entire rooms of a house to a library.

I remember being in Elementary school a lil over a decade ago, just as the internet and computers that could handle it were becoming common place in households. I remember a teaching angrily explaining that math "Was so too a relevant thing to teach! After all, let's say you're working a cashier job, there's a black out, and your customers insist on buying things and getting exact change anyway..."

Shortly after, I stopped trying in my math classes.

Yeah...using a cashier job as an example of why math is important is probably about the worst possible way to motivate kids

Math is useful all the time.

1) You're playing an MMO and are at the Auction House. You will have a 5% listing fee on each of your three items. One is an ultra-rare item that you want to post high, the other two are common vendor-trash. You have 5,000 units of that game's currency. How much can you list each for?

2) You're at work. You need to circulate a tank through a line that is not normally used for that product. After you finish circulating the tank, you will need to flush that line by running a different product through it. Otherwise, you will get chunks of stuff through a pump that can't handle it. The line is 40 feet long and 6 inches in diameter. The tanks are 40ft tall and holds 10,000 barrels. How many inches of product movement in the tank will signify that the line is flushed through, assuming that a good flush is triple the volumne of the line?

3) You've been fishing all day and are hanging around with your drunk buddies. One of them caught a 14 inch Trout. How big of a fish can you claim to have caught without looking like an obvious liar?

1) I do Mayhem Missions until I'm so rich I don't care. (Really)

2) I don't understand that crap.

3) Make jokes about how he's compensating for something and imply that his mother likes my 14 inch Trout.

A physical book is substantially more durable than a piece of consumer electronics and people will still be able to interface with it 1000 years from now.

I can't even access the hard drives I salvaged from my last computer, let alone the stack of 5 1/4" floppies I uncovered during my last move (which are almost certainly corrupted anyway).

It's equal parts alarming and amusing how people view essentially impermanent, fragile & vulnerable mechanisms as some sort of lasting replacement for physical objects. Give society another decade or so to hone its dependence on hardware and anybody with a handful of EMPs will be able to knock us over with a feather.

I disagree. With sufficient determination, they can even work without paper.

Wait, did they just try to Retcon Lincoln into being some sexy young Depp-ian rogue? Or are they saying that the ugly came later?

No that is just human nature MT. Most people want those that are good and great to be handsome/beautiful while those that are bad must be ugly.

What they actually said was the 3rd Edition may not be printed. The version you currently see at the libraries is the 2nd Edition which has 23 volumes.

The 3rd Edition is expected to be twice as big. They've been working on it for 21 years and they're still a decade away from completing it. They're not going to make a final decision on it's format until it's close to completion.

Not the paper they print those dictionaries on. It makes public restroom TP look durable. Last time humanity used a really durable writing medium was about 1000 years ago

Yeah but little do the monsters err students realize that most of them have a future that involves a shirt with a name tag and a paper hat asking people, "You want fries with that?"

I still shudder at the memory of going to a Sheets convenience store and after ordering chili cheese nachos watching the employee making my order walk out to the menu three times to look at the picture to see how it was made.

Some prefere it?

I know I have a friend (a couple years younger, but roughly the same age, so shouldn't be a factor)...who basically gets everything owned on to a harddrive.

Music. On the computer!
Movies. On the computer!
Book. On the computer!

Everything in the palm of his hand!

Me?

Music. I want to own that CD case!
Movies. Dammit! I want my DVD/Blu-Ray Case!
Book. I want to own it and hold it in my hands.

Store it on your computer, and then it breaks? Okay, so you stored it on some website built for storing all your stuff! YAY! Long time downloading all you own back onto your new system!

I still grab my thesaurus from off the shelf more often than going to thesaurus.com
