Like BrandX, I like having physical copies more than digital copies of things. And I actually like dictionaries. And all sorts of reference books. They're just handy, plus I find it fun every now and then to crack 'em open and look up things.

I'm a bit sad to see the OED being put to rest, but I can understand the reasons behind the decision.

Since you were talking about unclogging toilets, I was fairly certain I was completing your set-up...

The 3rd Edition is expected to be twice as big. They've been working on it for 21 years and they're still a decade away from completing it. They're not going to make a final decision on it's format until it's close to completion.
Yes but does the 3rd Edition dictionary have the word "aardvark" in it?
Or even "antidisestablishmentarianism" for that matter?

[5 points to the one tells us where those references come from. ]

I'm not really worried about computers going "belly up".
I'm actually more worried about computers becoming self-aware...

That's when we're going to need the ammo.

The OED is printed on acid free paper that will last basically forever barring fire or flood. It's necessarily thin, but of very high quality, and the bindings are tremendously hardy buckram cloth.

Compared to the fragility and impermanence of modern electronic data storage it might as well be graven in stone.

Just wait until the next large scale blackout due to solar activities. See how good your electronic media is then.

This.

Growing up, I always dreamed of having a library in my home with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on every wall. There is something about old, heavy, leather-bound books that strikes a chord with me. Maybe because they look like cool magical tomes from D&D?

I dunno.

But, yeah, I will miss printed books, even if it's better for the environment, cheaper, more portable, yadda yadda...

Because there is a certain joy, a certain amount of discovery and visceral pleasure that comes through actually HOLDING an object like that, paging through it. I also think it is kinda cool to see the size of the Unabridged ones and take in just how convoluted and gigantic the English language is. I won't give up my dictionary/thesaurus combo for anything.

Also, there is always the chance that the entirety of electronic devices will fail some day. What?? It could happen!

That they do, GG, that they do. Not as nice as a freshly opened pack of M:tG cards, but close.

Famous lines from Abe Lincoln:

"Four score and seven years ago..."
"A house divided against itself cannot stand."
"Don't hate me because I'm beautiful."

True facts.

true but man... there is a point to those examples, and sometimes should motivate people...

Aloow me to tell a small TRUE tale:

At my job we took an employee out to lunch for for her Bday. The bill was $99 and some change. So the cashier asked me if I wanted to leave a tip and i said yes, $20 should be good. And she lokoed at me like i was crazy for leaving such a large tip.

I responded that while 15% is the minimum, we preferred to give 20%. And she said "ok, but how did you know that?" I was confused. So she explained her question. "How did you know 20% of $100 is $20?" And she took out a calculator to make sure i was right.

My face was just blank. I lowered my head and just handed the credit card over.

/sigh

While that story is a sad indictment on schools, lack of attention paid in them and the general intelligence level of the average person, telling children that they're gonna need math for their future as *cashiers* is not going to motivate them. Remember what you wanted to be when you were growing up? I'm fairly certain it wasn't a cashier.
