Like BrandX, I like having physical copies more than digital copies of things. And I actually like dictionaries. And all sorts of reference books. They're just handy, plus I find it fun every now and then to crack 'em open and look up things.
I'm a bit sad to see the OED being put to rest, but I can understand the reasons behind the decision.
What they actually said was the 3rd Edition may not be printed. The version you currently see at the libraries is the 2nd Edition which has 23 volumes.
The 3rd Edition is expected to be twice as big. They've been working on it for 21 years and they're still a decade away from completing it. They're not going to make a final decision on it's format until it's close to completion. |
Not the paper they print those dictionaries on. It makes public restroom TP look durable. Last time humanity used a really durable writing medium was about 1000 years ago

Just wait until the next large scale blackout due to solar activities. See how good your electronic media is then.
When I read a book, I like to be an actual book, not something on my screen
Seriously. I practically have the entirety of humanity's accumulated knowledge accessible on a 5"x2" device in my pocket. Tell me again why i need a 40 lbs, two thousand page book (that gives definitions, etymology, pronunciation and spelling of words in only ONE language) threatening to crush whatever furniture I put it on?

Wait, did they just try to Retcon Lincoln into being some sexy young Depp-ian rogue? Or are they saying that the ugly came later?

Yeah...using a cashier job as an example of why math is important is probably about the worst possible way to motivate kids

true but man... there is a point to those examples, and sometimes should motivate people...
Aloow me to tell a small TRUE tale: At my job we took an employee out to lunch for for her Bday. The bill was $99 and some change. So the cashier asked me if I wanted to leave a tip and i said yes, $20 should be good. And she lokoed at me like i was crazy for leaving such a large tip. I responded that while 15% is the minimum, we preferred to give 20%. And she said "ok, but how did you know that?" I was confused. So she explained her question. "How did you know 20% of $100 is $20?" And she took out a calculator to make sure i was right. My face was just blank. I lowered my head and just handed the credit card over. /sigh |
This. Growing up, I always dreamed of having a library in my home with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on every wall. There is something about old, heavy, leather-bound books that strikes a chord with me. Maybe because they look like cool magical tomes from D&D? I dunno. But, yeah, I will miss printed books, even if it's better for the environment, cheaper, more portable, yadda yadda... |
Since you were talking about unclogging toilets, I was fairly certain I was completing your set-up...
