Hey, I have another suggestion. Make a Tank.

What?

I'm just saying that you shouldn't dismiss tanking in CoH out of hand. Fire tanks, for example, are very damage oriented, and hopefully a decent team would understand the difference between a fire tank and a stone tank.

Welcome to the game.

Truth.

Suprised no one really delved into this tidbit yet (I didn't mention it because I figured someone else did while I was typing my first post)

It is flat out impossible to see everything in the game before you get to level 50 on your first character. That's why people encourage rolling alts. I've been playing for almost 5 years and still occasionally run across a story arc I've never done before.

On the population part of it: A lot of new players get the impression that the game is dead, this is not true. Most of the game takes place in indoor instances called missions, there's none of the "Stand around here for an hour until this dude spawns so you can kill him and get the dealy he's carrying, which he only drops 1 in 5 times", so you don't see groups of people just standing around. Also, travel between missions in this game is extremely quick, so you probably won't see more than a couple people running around in any given zone at once.

Because of that, shouting in Broadcast that you're looking for a team is not very effective at actually finding you one. When you decide on a server to play on, go down to the server forums and look for the global channels for that server (Example: the Pinnacle server has PinnBadges), people in missions or other zones (or even other servers) can see that channel and perhaps invite you, where broadcast is limited to only that specific zone.

+1. I'm a big proponent of the global chat channels.

Welcome to the City! After all the good advice , all i've got to add is, don't be afraid to try different builds for any Archetype (AT). You'll learn that our ATs have some great flexibility and yes Invention Origins (IOs) can be your friend!

Roll one of everything. Try different servers. Go poking in the server forums (near the bottom of the forum list) for "global channels" to make grouping easier. Have fun!

I would also suggest a blaster as a first character. I was basically in the same boat as you when I first started back in '04; I had done the melee/tank type of character on every previous MMO I had played and was looking for something different.

A blaster is a lot of fun early and gets a little hard to solo later (but not impossible by any means). The problem with the very solo-friendly scrapper as a first character is that going from a scrapper to tank later will make you feel like you're not doing much damage, and going from a scrapper to a blaster will make you feel like you can't take a hit at all.

Just my two cents.

Welcome in.

Try the Server forums, don't just settle on Freedom or Virtue. Everyone tends to have events, different community focuses, etc. Find one that fits. Or just try them all.

First AT-wise... my first 50 was a blaster. *shrug* It's fun, but you're squishy. Roll one, roll a Scrapper, roll a Brute (villainside.) Go ahead and roll another tank - at level 10, you unlock dual builds and can put a little more emphasis on one thing or another (tanking/aggro holding vs damage/your own survival.)

Try a mastermind. Try a Dominator.

Try everything. Spend a few hours in the costume creator. Remember, your look has nothing to do with your ability. Wings don't let you fly, Fly lets you fly. Hover lets you fly much slower.

Epic ATs unlock at 20. Ignore them for a while while you get your feet wet.

Read through your story arcs as you play.

Have fun.

Just to tack on to that. I'd like to say don't power level in AE on your character and go play the game normally once. There's more than enough content in the game to get to 50 without a single hitch.

However, if you're playing through an alt, feel free to check out AE. There's more to the thing than just farm missions (which generally have horribly skewed risk/reward levels and end up being just downright boring if you ask me). With a little bit of effort you can find a lot of really well done story arcs that are a lot of fun. You just really don't want to get stuck in AE your first time around, it really keeps you from finding out about the game.

A lot of people suggest Scrappers for first-timers, but I honestly don't agree with that if you're a seasoned MMO player. Why? Well, most other games have a sort of Melee DPS character. Yeah, it's easy to get into and easy to learn which is great for those just starting out with MMOs in general but I'm going to go out on a limb and give you a different suggestion:

Defenders/Controllers.

Why? Well, they really emphasize what is different about CoH than other games. You might feel as if you've been thrown into the deep end at first with lower damage and not a ton of defense... but you'll quickly see your characters role change and evolve as you level.

For more in depth information, Paragon Wiki is your friend and the Player's Guide is a good place to start.

Notice everyone has their opinion/favorite architype (class) to start with.

Scrappers are pretty much killing machines. Once they mature think of Wolverine hopped up on caffeine.

Tankers are your proverbial meat shield, lots of HP and damage mitigation. They can take a lot of abuse but don't deliver anywhere near the damage of a Scrapper or a Blaster. But if you like being mobbed by, well mobs, Tanker is the way to go.

Blasters can do a lot of damage but are awful breakable with no defenses to speak of other than running away. Most of my blasters fly for that reason.

Defenders are the Buff/Debuf specialist with similar but weaker attacks as Blasters.

Controllers ... well ... control, stopping, sleeping, blinding single or multiple critters and have a weaker version of the buffs/debufs of Defenders. But they do get a pet usually at Level 32 to help with the heavy lifting. Illusion Controllers get several short duration pets earlier.

So if you like to get up close and personal with your targets, Scrappers and Blasters. If you want to hang back while doing damage, Blasters and Defenders. If you like playing with your targets then a Controller can be fun.

And here is and old but still relevant guide to new players crossing over from other MMOs.

Enjoy.

So much THIS. If you're experiencing them for the first time, even the oldest story arcs are awesome for the story alone. READ the text of the "earn your cape" mission. While the new version has much improved game-play, the simple message of the original was still powerful and humbling.

I highly recommend picking up the Zone story arcs as they're a lot of fun and usually build off each other. They are, in my opinion, the current "best foot forward" for the game (until Going Rogue arrives in a couple of weeks). You can also get the bulk of your leveling done just by doing them and a few other story arcs on the side.

The Hollows has several missions (Frostfire most notably) that can earn you an entire level all on your own. These arcs are available from levels 5-14.

At the high end of this range you should also try out the revamped Positron Task Forces.

Faultline has a great overall story-arc where each arc builds on the previous one and introduces you to characters that will show up again later. They also give you a couple of interesting temporary powers and unlock a special shop where you can pick up a few SO enhancements earlier than you normally can. The first two contacts are 15-19 and the second two are 20-24.

Also during this range I'd recommend running the Midnight Squad arc to unlock access to Cimerora and Mercedes Sheldon, who has a number of story arcs in the 20-25 range.

At level 20 you can head to Striga Isle, which has a series of connected Story arcs that also provide you with a number of useful temp powers and unlock one of the more fun task forces in the game. The first set of contacts is from 20-24, the second from 25-29.

If you've run the Faultline or Sheldon arcs then at level 25 you'll unlock Oroboros and be able to use a special "temp" power (its in the temp category but doesn't expire) to run the introductory Oroboros arc. The Midnight Son and Mender Lazarus story arcs also provide you some interesting bits of backstory on the Circle of Thorns and 5th Column respectively.

Also during this range, the newest story arcs from issue 17 are unlocked and make use of some of the new mission tech that will be coming with Going Rogue.

Also starting at level 25 are the story arcs in Croatoa. These also provide you with a number of fun temp powers and unlock the Katie Hannon task force. These arcs run in two stages from 25-29 and 30-35.

Starting at level 35 you can start running missions for contacts in the Rikti War Zone. These missions don't expire so you can start them whenever you wish, but the first set can be taken as early as 35, the second set at 40, and the third and fourth sets at 45+. The final missions literally have you saving the world in epic fashion and unlocks the Lady Grey Task Force as well. It also unlocks Vanguard merits which can be used to pick up special costume pieces and powers for those so inclined.

If you've unlocked Cimerora, then at level 40+ you'll have access to Prometheus who has some fun story arcs to run and at this point you should be well and truly ready to run the Imperius Task Force, which has a really fun plot twist and unlocks Roman armor costume pieces and weapons for your character.

Also worth doing at least once are the Statesman Task Force, a Mothership Raid (in the Rikti War Zone), and a Hamidion Raid (in the Hive). Check out the various server channels and boards to find out when some of these are scheduled.

And this is just ONE method of getting through the game (and even then only on the Hero side... villain side is a whole different path). After that there are still a ton of other story arcs that can be done... not to mention a whole new slew of content coming with Going Rogue.

Heck, if you only have one, that can be helpful if you can say why you like him/her/it.

The different ATs have vastly different playstyles and strategies. Blasters (typically) try to keep a little distance and kill stuff before it can get close enough to really hurt. Controllers (typically) prevent the enemy from moving or otherwise being able to cause damage AT ALL. Tanks (typically) keep the attention of the mobs so that the other people on the team can take them down while they are hitting the Tank. Defenders (typically) buff teammates and/or debuff enemies so teammates can do more damage and enemies can't do much damage. Scrappers are between a Tank and a Blaster, they have the ability to stay alive longer than a blaster, but deal more damage than a Tank, basically ending up in a situation where they try to kill enemies quickly so that they don't, themselves, die.

I'm not as familiar with the Villain ATs.

A those were very good two cents.

My first toon was a Blaster and thought being squishy was par for the course....I did not like faceplanting and running back to the Hollows from the hospital constantly, but thought it was part of the animal.

Then I rolled my first scrapper.

A Dark/Regen scrapper named Battlesneeze Jessie.

I will never forget being in the Hollows, and being surrounded by a gang of Outcasts...more Outcasts than I had been fighting in the radios.

I was positive I was going to fall, but was determined to take as many of them as I could with me.

I sat at the keyboard totally shocked when I not only defeated them all, but had full health and endurance.

I, for the first time, actually felt SUPER!

Thus began my love affair with the Scrapper AT!

So yes, Blaster first then Scrapper

It makes your first hard fight so sweet

And welcome Vicros

Lisa.

One other piece of advice:

Do not be afraid to start teams. You don't have to know everything about everything to start a team.

Fix'd.

Just learn to differentiate between 'not looking', 'not accepting', and 'looking' in the search window, be sure to send tells before inviting, and you're above the curve already.

Hey Vicros.

A very warm welcome.

You also might want to have a read of the official CoH comics http://www.cityofheroes.com/media_an...c_archive.html.

They have been discontinued (The Midnight Hour for Issue 12 was the last one) however they tie in with some of the story arcs within CoH.

Counting me, I think that makes at least 4 "going against the grain" votes for Blaster, then Scrapper.

The bottom line being, if you can learn to play a Blaster, everything else will be THAT much easier to play.

Which isn't to say that being a Blaster is that much harder than other ATs, but it does force you to learn the entire spectrum of gameplay tactics & strategies, including things a Scrapper can safely ignore much of the time.

Blastering will give you a crash course in things like Aggro management, Stamina management, Pulling, targeting through other players, when to stand your ground and when to RUN FOR THE HILLS!, canny Inspiration use, etc. and etc.

Then you can jump on a Scrapper, switch off your higher brain functions and just, y'know...Scrap, secure in the knowledge that you've already proven yourself on a thinking-man's AT.

*ducks n flees the Scrapper-wrath*

p.s. if you do go Blaster, I'd say the Energy set is one of the "safer" sets for a new player, as your attacks also do KnockBack (KB), which makes keeping them away from your squishy-self that much easier. It also give you an opportunity to learn how to USE the KB to HELP your team, rather than harm it by blowing baddies OUT of oil slicks, ice patches, caltrop fields, etc.

Well, I have a few tips for newer players. First of all, while every archetye has theyre primary role on a team, most archetypes can fill just about any role. No Major damage dealers on the team? A support player or two can easily supply sufficient damage. No tank? a scrapper can take a decent amount of damage, especially if a support player is covering him by weakening his enemies or making him tougher. In fact a team of all support players with no main tank or damage dealer is still an extremely effetive group. Also, there are several power combinations that people will say are the best, like Fire control and kinetics for a controller, or fire blast for blaster, or stone armor for a tank. While these ARE effective power sets and combos, it is not possible to make a "bad" character. You may be less effective than others, but by no means are you useless. Basicly, I recomend a scrapper for your first character. Personally they are my favorite archetype. They can take a hit, and dish out some hefty damage. Controllers are another one of my favorites, and while they can be very hard to play (especially if you are solo), they are potentially extremely powerful. Blasters are a bit of a challenge as well, but only because they are fragile. Not a complicated character to play. Then there are tankers. I personally dont like playing tanks, I find them kind of dull. However many people enjoy them and thay can make a major difference on a team. Defenders are another archetype that is potentially frustrating, but very fun, and quite powerful. Then there are Warshades and Peacebringers. You don't get to play them until you get a character to lvl 20, and they are possibly the most complex archetypes, namely because of theyre ability to shapeshift. As a human they can deliver modest damage from a range, and have some decent powers to resist damage. However they can shapeshift into a kind of flying squid, and deliver a powerful ranged punch, but they lose virtually all of theyre damage resistance. They can also turn into a large, lobster like creature. This form is wicked tough, and can heal itself. However this form is slow and can only attack at a close range. All in all, no archetype or powerset is bad, but they are all unique. Try out a whole bunch of characters before you pick a favored archetype.

Oh, and welcome to Paragon City and/or the rogue isles. I have found the CoH community to be a very friendly one in my 5 years here, and I hope you have the same experience. As for a starting Server, I recomend pinnacle. It is a small community, but there are enough people to get stuff done. It is also the friendliest server I've been on, and in my experience, most peple are very tolerant and understanding of new players. if you do decide to play there, look me up. My global name is @szpek (if you wanna talk to me, type "/tell @szpek, inseret text here"). I have a small casual supergroup (basicly a guild) you're welcome to join

Welcome to the game !
Most people have so far mentioned trying out a scrapper or defender or blaster...
I would suggest something completely different.
Let your darkside out and become a villain... ! Oh its sooo much more rewarding giving the good guy the beat down, or just stealing from other thieves.. Ahh ... It gives me shivers just thinking about how much fun it is to play a villain and beat up the longbow or complete a strike force from Lord Recluse.
Trust me.. You'll love it.
And even tho it is villains, most of us are pretty polite and helpful to newcomers
