Quote:Fix'd.One other piece of advice:
Do not be afraid to start teams. You don't have to know much about anything to start a team.
Just learn to differentiate between 'not looking', 'not accepting', and 'looking' in the search window, be sure to send tells before inviting, and you're above the curve already. -
Quote:Heck, if you only have one, that can be helpful if you can say why you like him/her/it.Welcome!
Before I recommend an archetype, would you tell me who your three favorite superheroes are?
The different ATs have vastly different playstyles and strategies. Blasters (typically) try to keep a little distance and kill stuff before it can get close enough to really hurt. Controllers (typically) prevent the enemy from moving or otherwise being able to cause damage AT ALL. Tanks (typically) keep the attention of the mobs so that the other people on the team can take them down while they are hitting the Tank. Defenders (typically) buff teammates and/or debuff enemies so teammates can do more damage and enemies can't do much damage. Scrappers are between a Tank and a Blaster, they have the ability to stay alive longer than a blaster, but deal more damage than a Tank, basically ending up in a situation where they try to kill enemies quickly so that they don't, themselves, die.
I'm not as familiar with the Villain ATs. -

More unsolicited advice!
Check my signature for a link... pretendy fun time games.
This game is very much in that category. If someone is ruining your experience and flinging feces (to coin a vernacular), then you have three choices in this game. You can ignore it literally, you can /ignore it (/ignore <lusername>), or you can return fire and post the results here; http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=125267 for all to see.
I enjoy the last option most, but I don't run into many poo flingers. -
I tend to slot attacks with 3 Dam, 2 Acc, 1 End/Recharge/whatever.
Toggles usually get 3 End, 3 Def/Res/Whatever
Other powers typically get 3 of the primary effect and 2 accuracy if they're targetted.
This, of course, changes dramatically when using set I/Os. I'm currently going for recharge as set bonus goals, I already have about 18% global recharge reduction, so I don't slot recharge specifically into most powers (unless it's part of a set). -
I am currently using my second build to move over to a different configuration of IO sets in the level 20-30 range for exemplaring purposes so that I don't lose all of my current set IOs.
I figured out that it would take 3-4 respecs to pull out all of my set IOs depending on how many of the sets I feel like trying to sell. -
Quote:Also, if you're willing to wait a few days, you can frequently find a version of the game (CoV, CoH, GvE, Architect, or whatever) on Amazon or Ebay for under $10 including shipping. I got GvE for myself and my wife for $15 including shipping on both (package shipping deal). The box was in spanish, but that is actually kinda cool imho. You can often find older versions (which don't matter, they all unlock the whole game) in the "bargain bins" of some retailers, which is a good buy if you can find one as they are usually priced at less than the $15.00 monthly subscription fee and come with a free month....
If you can find one of the older copies for less than or equal to the $15.00, then pick it up as it becomes a zero-sum effect.
If not though, I'd wait the couple of weeks we have left until the retail release of Going Rogue and pick up the Complete Edition retail box when it releases. You'll be wanting to get GR eventually anyway. -
First; Welcome back.
Next; http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Issues this will give you an overview of the big changes. There are other changes, but I can't remember where that stuff is kept.
Third; Epic ATs are like any other AT, 'cept more epic'er. It probably won't feel like a new game to you to play an EAT. -
One time I was on a team with my wife and some old SG members when we were having a conversation about Episode 3.
My wife was also maintaining a conversation with one of my co-workers; female.
At one point my wife stated that she would kill a school full of children for me... which went to the co-worker rather than the team. -
Ah, yes... I was able to get the GvE edition (in a spanish box) for about $8 including shipping not too long ago. I have the "Passe VIP" for pocket D in my wallet because I think it's rather funny.

Quote:You won't find AE for that, that's the original CoH. I've seen AE for about $10 plus S+H.New in original shrink wrap $1.44 + $3.99 shipping = $5.43. So yeah even after shipping.
Ya just gotta scroll past the featured merchants and read the listings under "New" and of course read the fine print. I wouldn't buy any software that didn't say factory sealed or new in original shrink wrap.
I think I'm getting the magic pack this week. -
True... mentioning that it exists would be helpful though.
Quote:You won't find anyone on here who's shelled out the cash for that drivel, this is a constantly changing game world. One that isn't all that complicated really.
This is coming from someone who's played, like you, sporadically for the past few years, mostly solo. I've got 1 50...
Concerning your not wanting to 'bother' us with questions...
Would it help if we begged?
You see, we love giving helpful advice to intelligent/respectful players.
Unfortunately, the forums are rife with half-wits and trolls. Not to mention the 'so hard on the eyes grammar train wrecks' posts from people who then attack anyone who doesnt say exactly what they wanted to hear.
So, please don't hesistate to ask questions. We'll embrace you for it!
Getting a reasonably intelligent question about game mechanics and/or build techniques is so rare that even the lurkers come out and post three page rants (typically helpful ones) about stuff vaguely related to the question. This is the only part of the board that I check frequently because it's so very full of good general information and specific questions that I wouldn't have thought to ask. -
This is why I have TP; I get TP friend so that when a few people I know who are speeders get completely and totally lost I can just tp them to the mission door so we can get started... I really don't like exploring every inch of the city because I can't find a way to get over an inconveniently placed wall.

Quote:This is dangerously out of date information. AVOID.
City of Heroes Leveling: Our City of Heroes Strategy Guide provides you with a thorough quick leveling walkthrough up to level 50 with all locations you have to visit, all missions that have to be accomplished and the character changing measures that have to be taken along the way. In addition you are furnished with information about every individual zone and strategies enabling you to take down even the nastiest villain.
City of Heroes Influence: Influence is your currency while wandering around on the world of City of Heroes and it's not that easy to come by. The Influence section in our CoH Strategy reference does not only show you some effective ways of earning Influence, it also gives you tips on Influence management showing you the right times to purchase Enhancements and giving you recommendations on what to consider when doing so.
CoH Characters: The CoH Strategy Guide includes a character creation section with an overview of each archetype's abilities and uses for group and solo playing, thus making it easy for you to choose a character build that suits your playing style from the beginning.
City of Heroes Villains: The author supplies you with a list of all different types of foes that you will encounter throughout the game, their individual powers and strategies on how to deal with them. You'll also learn to divide your enemies into different categories and recognize at a glance how easy they will be to defeat for your individual character.
City of Heroes Combat: The combat section gives you a broad overview on the way the 'Brawl Index' works, the different damage types you can cause, such as Smashing, Fire, Energy, Toxic up to even Psionic damage, divides them into damage styles such as melee or AoE and shows you the different defence types. Ultimately our CoH Strategy manual includes a further section with the different types of status attacks, what they do and gives recommendations on which to choose when building your character. Our up-to-date CoH Strategy guide also includes a thorough overview about every attack any archetype can dish out with stats for endurance cost, activation time, range, damage etc. on 30+ pages for each archetype!
CoH Powersets: Powersets play a vital role in City of Heroes as they define the attacks you can perform as well as their strength. Furthermore they usually have secondary effects you can stack with further powers such as defensive powers to make your defence more effective, which can be the difference between life and death, e.g. when soloing with a Blaster. Additionally this section gives you an overview about every individual pool power, such as the traveling abilities, in all of their development stages plus stats.
Solo vs. group playing: Like in many current MMORPGs, grouping is vital for certain missions where you have to disarm two bombs simultaneously or conquer elite bosses that regain health faster then you can dish out hits points. So you will find a section about planning your solo build and which character to choose for it as well as a section on how to set up the ideal group for team play, thus satisfying both, the soloing superhero and the more sociable team heroes. Furthermore you are furnished with detailed, proven and commented solo build recommendations, power leveling hints, an overview of all different types of missions and a dedicated accolade and badge acquisition section.
Free updates: All future updates of this guide are of course included in the purchase price. When an update is published, you will receive a notification. Just log into your account and download the update for free!
Brawl Index, as stated is not used. There is no mention of inventions. There is no mention of PvP. This sounds like info from prior to CoV. If they haven't updated the ad in that long, imagine how long it's been since they updated the guide. -
Quote:This said (which I agree with), it's a good idea to play on a team which has a bit of diversity in most situations. A team of all blasters tends to have an Achilles heel, as does a team of all tankers, a team of all defenders, and a team of all controllers. Diverse powers can cover the holes that the other players on the team may have... a scrapper on a team of 'fenders and 'trollers can add the bit of damage that they are missing and take some of the agro away. A 'troller on a team of blasters can lock down a boss or elite boss so that it can be saved for last, once all of the minions are taken out.SO not needed!
Teams can be any mix of Types and powers.
Not only do each AT have an effect but each Power has a secondary effect.
A simple Tanker build has Gauntlet that adds Taunt to their attacks. A Fire Tanker would have extra Damage to the attacks where an ICE Tanker would slow foes down.
This makes the Tank/Healer/DPS triad kind of not important. A team of nothing but Controllers can kick as much **** as a team of all Blasters.
So yes you don't need a "HEALER" or a "TANKER" they are very nice to have but a good team with good builds of any AT and Power mix can really take down foes.
Every power set has many uses and many play styles. Once you see how someone plays a character, though, you can team with that character pretty well as any of your characters which you're familiar with... My wife only plays scrappers and I have 'trollers, 'fenders, blasters, and tanks that all team with her well.
The trinity... not a thing here, but diversity can make things more fun. -

I've gotten that a few times on my laptop... usually I find that the router is offline or my network connection has been reset.
Like Back Blast said, if it happens again, investigate. -
Quote:What makes it really irritating is that you have to jump a different way on the way to Cimerora vs on the way out.Face the cave entrance, turn off travel powers, hold backwards and jump a couple times....works every time it happens for me.
It happens every time any of my characters zone in or out of that zone.
Every. Single. Time.
Can't wait till it's fixed. -
Quote:Dang....I picked up a bunch of codes from Amazon a while back and was unable to apply the basic CoH and CoV codes even though they had never been applied before. When I made an inquiry with support I was told it was "Because they wouldn't add any in game features or goodies" So, I would assume that at this point, since they've merged the game into one entity from a back end standpoint, applying a CoV code would not work since you've got the game already going.
Give it a shot, if it doesn't apply to yours you can still give it to your friend since the code won't have been successfully applied to an account.
edit: Hell, I've still got around 4 or 5 unused codes from the normal editions and the bootleg edition.
I'll fax you $20 for one of those codes. -
Quote:Occulsion, Vertical Sync, and Anti-aliasing seem to have the biggest effect on my system. I have those off, not much of a difference visually, but a huge difference in performance. For #1, I have found that setting Ambient Occlusion to OFF returns 20 fps for me. When the game still stutters too much, which I've begun noticing usually happens after leaving a mission or my SG Base, doing a /reloadgfx seems to clear things up for a while.
For #2, make sure you have Tool Tips enabled in your Options.
The rest of the settings I have at around a 9/10... my system was cranked up to 11 prior to Dark Mirror. -
Has anyone tried the above? If not, I'm going to have to try a regular CoV code on my account. If it doesn't work, I know someone who could use it. Even if it doesn't work and I can't give the code away afterwards, it's no big loss. I'd really like to get all of the codes possible applied to my account... bonus items and extra months are nice.
-
Keep in mind you can apply a code to your account for any version of the game that you've not applied previously. I have applied to my account the following;
CoH Preorder
CoH Retail
CoV Collectors
GvE
I've seen people combining many of these codes with the Mac code, the CoH Collectors and the Architect edition codes... I don't know of anyone having trouble combining any of these codes. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. -
Quote:I have heard of a few people finding the game in $10 or $5 bins. It's not that uncommon for a store to clear out a warehouse or a back room and find a bunch of stuff that is outdated, such as a CoV box, and dump it at a loss so they don't have to waste space in storage for it anymore.Indeed, but the fact is:
i was buying some stuff for my office (in the Office Depot), when i see the
game in the junk box (the things with discount).
the price. 5 bucks with:
-Cd Game
-Helix Figure (the fish guy)
-Two Posters
-A bunch of free tickets to play Trials
-A Collector Card
-And a very nice book
-oh, and the instructions
You can actually find the game at a few online retailers for less than $15 if you dig long enough. Some people just don't understand the value of what they have.
