What has this world come to?

Reading this thread, all I came up with was how that's a cute name for a plant-based toon. Shows how much I know.

I'm not calling anyone out, I'm just saying it is stupid that people decide to turn on you, even those not involved, when you remind someone of that particular rule.

Your only responsibility is to /petition these people. Do it anonymously and let the GMs deal with it. After all, that's what they get paid to do.
Petitioning others is not, under any stretch of logic, a responsibility. It is an option if one chooses to use it, but not a responsibility.

Of course, it's never smart to bring it to their attention. That just makes you seem like a punk who's all like "COPYRIGHT! COPYRIGHT! I'MMA REPORT YOU NAO!" which makes people mad at you for no good reason. I just silently report it and move on. Though I will admit, more often than not I end up adding the person as a friend just to see their name get Generic'd, silently laugh to myself, then go about my business.

Gotta keep things confidential, ya' know?
Putting them on friend list to laugh at them later is what makes you seem like a punk.

3) For fun, put the character on your friends list and start taking bets in a global channel as to how long it will take for the character to be Generic'ed. Right after "300" released in theaters there were zillions of Spartans suddenly running around. My favorite was "Testakles," but he was generic in under an hour.
That had to do more with the name, since making a Spartan character doesn't violate anybodies copyrights(unless they were making a specific character from the movie).

You expect too much from people around here.

I check their Vet badges. If I don't see them I will usually send them a tell about the rules against duplicating a Copyrighted/Trademarked infringement.

If they have Vet badges, then they should know better. They do not get any communication from me.

I do not waste my playtime hunting down violators, but I petition those that I come across.

Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can 'ni' at will to old ladies. There is a pestilence upon this land. Nothing is sacred. Even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under considerable economic stress at this period in history.

No, if he had friended them, then laughed 'in their face' when their name/costume got gen'd, then he'd be a punk.

You know, if the devs want to stamp out players making copyrighted characters, they should just have the NPCs go all "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (pointing and wailing) at the offending character.

They all laughed at me when I said I wanted to be a comedian.
But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

Love this. Have the Zombie Invasion-type imagery and music involved as well. Funny stuff.

Fair enough. But bragging about it on the forums also makes someone a punk, tool, or whatever term one prefers.

Clearly I was wrong. My appologies. I didn't realize that the toon in your sig was an NPC in the game. Whats the contacts name? Kamen Rider 00? How do you go about getting it as a contact?

Maybe its an MA arc...? Care to share the arc id#?

Since you don't have that info anywhere, perhaps you can understand why people may come to that conclusion. Thank you, have a nice day. ^_^

Well, considering that the devs did actually request players to keep an eye out for infringing characters, and petition them, it's not that much of a stretch. Of course, this was years ago.

Rider 00 is my character. The way he appears in my Signature was his original appearance. Over the last week or so his appearance has changed a lot since the screenshot I took of him, I'll have to update my Siggy and Avatar. Thank you for reminding me. I've been changing his appearance slightly each day, trying to make it obvious he's Tokusatsu themed without him appearing like a rip off character.

However, I do have a Tokusatsu themed MA Arc if you want to take a shot at it, Tokusatsu Hero Force - Rise of the Darkin. I'll get the ID for you later.

I've reported one person in my five-odd years here, for making a KKK grand wizard villain.

I was unswayed by the elaborate justification in their bio.

I don't see a reason to snitch on a fellow player for the "crime" of creating an homage character. It's only a crime because Marvel has a Matrix-style infintely replicating squad of lawyers to throw at the courts so NC rolled over on their players rather than fight it.

Which is how these things generally work- viva, capitalism!

I mean...what did I do wrong?

The rule is there for a reason, Marvel even had there own employees spying on this game. Whats stopping other companies from doing the same? I don't want to see players causing NCSoft and Paragon Studios to be sued and having to shut down City of Heroes simply because a player decided to make a Vegeta, Bart Simpson, Spiderman or Wonder Woman. I bring up the rule because no one else seems to care unless it's something mentioned on the forums.
If you're going to petition someone, petition them and move on. Don't tell them about it. Don't mention it in broadcast. Just do it and be done.

Personally, the only time I petition someone is if it is a total blatant ripoff (Incredible Bulk, green skin, purple shorts) and they have vet badges enough that they should know better. (I typically let zero, three, and six monthers get off with a polite question on whether they know the rules.) Or if the bio says something like "yeah yeah, this is a ripoff character, SO WHAT!!!"

It's the same with ignoring someone. No one else frikken CARES. Ignore them and be done! Don't tell them, don't tell your audience, don't announce it to the world. No one cares. The troll you're ignoring sure doesn't! Telling someone you're ignoring them is second grade bullcrap.

The bio that I encountered read, "Read the comic <offensive slur>!"

Too bad too. I would have loved to see this play out in the courts. If I had to bet Marvel's lawsuit would have been thrown out. Marvel was attempting to blame the tool maker(NC Soft) and not the people actually 'infringing'(the users). But it was in their best interest to settle since it saved them probably a few million and it was definitely in Marvel's best interest because they didn't really have anything to gain from the lawsuit but stood to lose a bunch of it got thrown out.

Oh, please. Admitting to enjoying a little schadenfreude isn't punk behavior, it's normal.

Indeed. Broadcast is a poor way of dealing with it. With some people, you can get through to them via polite tells. But by going public, you're gonna put them on the defensive from the start, as they may feel "called out".

This has been a contentious issue for several years now.

In the past, there have been posters who have expressed different "levels" of what hey consider to be over the line with the Homage vs. Rip-off debate.

One of the many was a 2/3rds rule: If 2 of the following hit too close, you've gone too far: (Name+Bio+Costume/powersets).

But it varies from one poster to another.

This. Unless the charcter is offensive, (those I petition immediately) I ignore a toon unless two out of the 3 factors lend themselves to copying. If someone named Kal-El is running around, looks like Superman, and has no bio, I will petition them. I just do not make a scene about it.
