Why do you enjoy playing your tank?
I like being the toughest AT in the game.
Ill agree that Tankers have a lower damage cap, but do less damage then all other ATs?Thats debatable.
Atleast the types of Tanks I play do damage anyhow.
My Favorites are FA/SS and FA/FM Tanker builds.By being the focal point of the fight, I can dish out Maxed Tanker Damage Cap AoE to a entire mob.
Alot of people dont use sets for Tanks that require you to pay attention to your screen like FA does. However if you buy into a Damage Aura set like FA in the first place, you tend to do more damage then the average Willpower or Invln Tanker due to a Damage Aura and Fiery Embrace to dump more damage on.
I know for a fact a FA/FM Tanker cant out damage a Scrapper of the same FM/FA sets, but Itll sure make a MA, Kat, DB, DM, and BS Scrapper look like crap in PvE.
That's because the devs have a double standard for the design of the ATs. As you said, there are many more avenues to more survivability and fewer to more damage. It's easy for all of the ATs to increase their survivability, including the AT that gains the least from pursuing more.
You assume everyone who plays a Tanker enjoys it, does so of their own free will and that power set exclusivity and lack of a better alternative don't factor into the equation. The very ATs you seem to view as protecting are exploiting you. You are used to farm IOs so they can construct a build so they no longer need a tank and can do all the things you talk about in your first paragraph that Tankers are denied. You are not a tank, you are a tractor being put to work on a farm to perpetuate the cycle of exploitation and allow the continued marginalization of the Tanker AT. . |
In all seriousness, when I had a Tank what I enjoyed was being stupidly tough. Having massive groups wailing on me to no avail.
The low damage was really frustrating though, especially solo. It just isn't a tradeoff I'm willing to make.

Why? Because why fight 5 when you can fight 25? I like the superheroic feel of just slowly and methodically pummeling my way through a crowd of enemies. I know that pretty much 98% of everyone else in this game is obsessed with speed. What's my DPS? How fast can I kill? Speed TFs, speed everything. I just don't care about it.
I enjoy the dynamics of tanking. Playing with aggro control. Herding and moving and shifting fights where I want them to be. Pulling the right group to charge my auras, dictating and choreographing fights the way I want them to go down. I spend most of my time soloing, so it gives me lots of time to tinker with fighting styles, what works with what powersets, etc.
I've got 9 tanks, and all of them bring a different flavor to the game. And if they get around to adding new Tanker powersets, I'll be right there to roll one of those too.
And because Tanker Tuesday rules. Just good ol' fashioned smashing fun.

Ok, I did a search for Tanker Tuesdays and found the schedule but had no luck in finding a description. What exactly is tanker Tuesdays, I've never been to one but love tankers.

It has also branched off onto other servers on the other Tuesdays of the month, but you would have to ask around for which Tuesday, as I'm pretty much just a Champion guy.

I'm on Freedom which according to the schedule is a new server to join it and is going to be the third Tuesday of the month. That sounds pretty awesome, I love plaing my tank, but since he does kinda crap damage and doesn't have taunt i don't get to party much.
Is it an all day kinda thing or does it not start til a certain time?
Currently, the Tanker Tuesday schedule is as follows:
1st Tuesday of the Month: Champion
2nd Tuesday of the Month: Justice
3rd Tuesday of the Month: Freedom
The TTs on the 4th and if applicable, 5th Tuesdays are run irregularly on other servers, by request.
All TTs start at 9:00 pm EDT; tanks gather at the IP gate in King's Row. All types and levels of tanks are welcome.

IOs to defense cap? 300 million inf.
Stepping up and shaking hands with the AV's FACE while your buddies whittle him down in an extended "death by a thousand cuts"? PRICELESS.
Fire Melee on Scrappers only get Fire Sword Circle for AoE, no Combustion. That said, there is a possibility for Combustion + FSC on a Tanker to out dps just FSC on a Scrapper. FA/FM Tanks can also get Fire Ball from the APP to work with BU + Fiery Embrace, which will definitely out DPS any Scrappers there.

I have a Fire/Fire/Pyre Tanker. Its not as Squishy as you think.I never took Toughness, and everything is DEAD before im really hurting to begin with.
Your a Raging Fireball running into a mob of "Flammable" beings.Keep that in mind.
Why I enjoy playing a Tank? Because no other AT can come close to matching what a Tank can do, nor do they come close. I can solo nearly any mission set for an 8 man team without dying. The only time I show any concern for what Im fighting is when the critters start sucking my end.
I started playing CoH in Issue 2, and got Ace to 50 in Issue 3. Tanks have fallen hard since those glorious day of yore. Being able to cap your resistances w/o tough, no Agro cap, Herding entire zones, etc... I once walked through the hollows from the Skyway City entrance to the Atlas Park entrance and gathered up every mob in-between and stood there letting the low levels pick them off or die trying.
Ace isnt a fraction of his former self, even with several billion in IOs slotted into him, but damn, if hes not a lot more super than any other AT. I have a brute and a scrapper slotted up they however cant take but a fraction of what Ace can. I will on occasion play a non main character for a while, but I always go back to Ace.
The brute and scrapper can kill around 8 or less mobs quicker than Ace, but when it comes to large capped out groups of mobs or higher, Ace kills faster and with less health loss.

There's no doubt about it, the bottom line of City of Heroes is dealing damage to defeat the enemy. You don't gain experience for getting hit, debuffing enemies or buffing allies. It pretty much only comes from beating people in the face until they fall down and don't get back up. To that end, people have taken this pursuit to the extremes, such as soloing Pylons, AVs and GMs, even duoing a mothership raid, all without temporary powers.
By choosing a tanker, you cut yourself off from being able to do those things. Tankers are the least damaging AT, and unlike defenders, have very limited means of increasing that. So in a game so focused on dealing damage and feeling super, why do you enjoy playing a Tanker? For me, it still is about feeling super. In fact, it's about feeling outright awesome. I've termed myself an "aggroholic," though I doubt I'm the first person to think of that term. I'm always actively seeking larger groups of stronger enemies. If I don't have to keep a finger on my Dark Regeneration bind, what we're fighting isn't tough enough. It makes me feel awesome to know that what I'm up against should be able to kill me, but can't. That's not all of it, though. By being able to keep all that attention, I'm letting an entire team of people be awesome. Everyone can go full bore with their attacks and not worry about return fire. That makes me feel awesome. |
Everyone you face is small and insignificant, and gets pummled for existing.
Then later they have the skin and flesh peeled from there bones and cooked into a stew to feed the Tankers need for MEAT!
Or is that just me?

Personally I like tanks because of the feeling you get when fighting a ridiculously large sea of enemies at once.
I can fight the same number of enemies with my dominator, but it just doesn't feel the same as actually being in the middle of all of the enemies, so I'm planning on making a new WP/Kinetic melee tank when going rogue comes out. Nothing beats actually being the focal point in the middle of all those enemies, it makes you feel much stronger than just beating them up.
Active (Freedom): Setna (Ice/Psi Dom), Arram (WP/KM Tank), Tesmiel (Elec/SS Tank), Astredax (Robot/Dark Mastermind), Operative Vidali (melee fortunata)
Retired (Virtue): Gaav (Inv/EM Tank), Baqra (Fire/SS Tank)
Because I like setting the pace for the team and the mission.

I later realized that this stealth power is often negated by leaving the damage aura on while you "stealth" through the middle of a mob.

Why do I enjoy playing my tank?
Because it's like the fun of being a Controller with the awesome of being right in the middle of entire 8-man groups without having to worry about dying because you're just that B.A.
I'm not gonna lie, having my first and main character be a Tanker makes everything else a little underwhelming. There's just something about seeing a whole group turn and start attacking you while you're just egging them on that really gets me going. There's nothing quite like going toe to toe with an AV, either.
I can tank on my Scrapper, but he doesn't make tanking fun like a real Tanker, nor does he do it quite as well. My Invuln/Ice will always have a special place in my character roster.
