Why do you enjoy playing your tank?
I love my Tanker because she is, by far, the most invincible character I have, and I love feeling invincible.
Pure Tanking is better then sex.
I like playing my Invuln/Stone tank because when I'm there, the rest of the team barely has to worry about their hp at all, making me the defender's center of attention for basing buffs and heals around.
Also if she is busy elsewhere for some reason, and my DP's already been popped? Well, Fault gives her time to get back to me.
I just realized another reason.
I'm trying my hand at Scrapping and my God I'm so Squishy!
I miss playing a tank every time I drop, lol.
Survivability is definitely one aspect. It's not just staying alive, it's staying alive when taking withering damage. You can sit a tanker in front of a pylon, go make lunch, come back, and watch the tank weather the storm while you eat. It's just a great feeling. Yes, you can do this with other ATs, given proper care and feeding, but nearly any tanker can get away with it without even splurging on IO sets.
This is pretty important, because the tanker is often the mitigation for the rest of the team. Not being attacked is pretty much the greatest mitigation available and tankers can grant that to any team at any time. No worries about refresh rates or immobs instead of holds with a tanker, just whether they can hold the aggro and handle the incoming damage.
Control is probably another. I like setting the table for the debuff and damage ATs and watching those orange numbers spike over the whole pack. It's easier to pull things together with a tanker than it is with a Controller, especially in space, and that helps both protect the team and maximize the impact of any debuffs and damage. Taunt, AOE, aura... herd it up and watch it melt.
If I'm playing something other than a tanker, then I really appreciate a tanker pulling everything together and keeping it there so I can get the most out of my character's abilities. Tankers may not be absolutely necessary, but it sure feels like things run smoother and safer with at least one tanker on the team.
Simply to be a hero among heroes.
For me, feeling super is what the game is about. There are only a very few ways that can really be achieved here; you can drop a foe with one blow, knock many foes flying like rag dolls (even if the damage is minimal, it feels powerful), or you can shrug off the enemy's best shots, standing unscathed in the eye of the storm.
This latter is what Tanks do, and it just feels more super than anything else in the game.
More that that, I like being the guy the team relies on. I play hockey - I'm a goalie. It just suits my playstyle.
Do I wish I could do more damage? Sometimes, yes. Honestly, though, I think Tankers are pretty decent, balance wise. It's concept-wise that they fall a bit short (which I believe is what Johnny BUtane is talking about).
My motto for tanks is in the signature....
The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.
If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-
I just indulged in my first Tanker Tuesday and I must say it was quite fun. I got to Run a Numina TF(my first one). I look forward to the next.
