Discussion: Attention - In Game Global Mail Expiration

My complaint is not with the system. A 30 day purge is fine and dandy. A 30 day purge with no documentation or notice is not. If we had been told up front that the attachments went poof after 30 days it would be my fault I spent too much time trying to decide what to do with the recipes.

However, we were NOT told we had 30 days until a few hours ago.

Therein lies my complaint. Undocumented "features" like this are not equitable or fair.

M'Teru couldn't get the job done. So she sent Mot to Astoria. Bad call.

No, I don't. Once you hit 20 items stored, you're taking up the maximum possible resources that this stuff could take up. The only thing this 30-day limit means is to shuffle around which particular 20 items are stored.

Hi,

I lost a bunch of PvP IO's and purples too. I tried to store them the first time i17 came out so I could send it to my main toon. But I was so busy leveling my Demon MM, so I did not have time to organize my recipes.

I knew it was wrong to store anything in the e-mail system as mentioned, but I also know that we are only allowed to store/send 20 items to ourselves, so if I was exploiting, I'm so sorry. ...But is there a way to get them back? If not fine, just warn us before making such changes in the future.

Send in a petition with as much info as you have about what you lost and when. If the 1st line support person says they can't assist, ask them to escalate it. From what I'm seeing since this afternoon, they are automatically escalating it without people needing to ask for that, suggesting it's a known issue. (It seems to be standard procedure that a more senior CSR has to deal with lost items.)

And are deleted after 30 days if you don't pick them up. So a full turnaround of 60 days.

However, all of the details stated by the rednames so far have been either a) emailing yourself stuff, or b) your emails to others getting bounced back (basically the same as emailing yourself). There would be no way to "return to sender": it's already there.

There has been no word yet on 1) email sent to other players, or 2) emails sent to inactive accounts. I'd like some redname clarification there.

I'm not sure it should be too hard to beat "Mentioning it well over 30 days later..." I think I'll agree with the poster quoted here.

Luckily, I think I only lost a couple large inspirations, a few million influence and a chunk of trust for the game developers in this matter. E-mails I hadn't figured out who I wanted to claim them on yet.

Hm.. I don't think that's an over reaction, considering this was must know information. Was this mentioned anywhere at all before now?

Yes, please.

Was this kept hush-hush to run a sting on RMTers, or what?

During testing it was made super clear that any interruption to the email system, such as globals going offline for any reason would also lose the attached e-mail items as a side effect. I can't remember who said it, but it was suggested that e-mail was in NO way supposed to be used as storage, just as a transit method.

Now for those that have lost items, I can appreciate the annoyance (I suffered the inventory black hole bug when the auction houses went online) but I have to ask why (in the case of important items like purples) they were left in e-mail storage and not claimed?

Thought so.

Strange I never saw any type of countdown remaining on emails.

A few days ago I took the liberty to create additional "storage sg's" just in case something like this were to occur.

Good instincts I guess.

I haven't read the whole thread but want to respond to those that are "LOL getting your stuff back" and "OMG I want compensation".

This happened to me very recently and I petitioned with all the details. I had a very good response from the GM team regarding this. It was escalated to a senior GM straight away and within a week I had all the recipes that I had lost returned to me on one of the characters.

They even informed me that they were going to inform the dev team and an announcement would be made which they have now done.

From what I understand there are logs of what people send themselves each other so it possible to get your stuff back.

Oh that is awesome news! Because I cannot remember what I have in my e-mail, all I know is there are a lot of stuff there. When I visit RV with my stalker, I'll get a pvp IO drop, then I send them to myself.

I did claim the recent ones I e-mailed myself, but I had to log out because I had to do lots of RL stuff. I did not get to petition it, mainly because I did not know the details of the recipes I sent myself, so I hope I'm not too late to do it tomorrow.

Ye designed the new system to eat peoples goods after a time limit, and then on top of that didn't bother telling anyone? Awesome.

I would just like to say: WHAT. THE. ****?

I just noticed yesterday that the emails I set to myself are missing. I had assumed it was just because that particular character couldn't see them for whatever reason, but logging in another character verified the emails were gone. I didn't panic, because Global chat servers go offline all the time, too.

But now you guys are telling me that you just deleted our stuff because you FELT LIKE IT? And gave us no warning whatsoever?

Nice.

By "nice" what I mean to say is: "I would like my goddamned **** back."

Just send in a petition, and when wording it, try to remember that the people you're asking to get you your stuff back aren't the ones responsible for it being deleted.

From what I've seen, stuff in "storage" is usually only eaten by global chat server foobar when the mail is relatively recent. I'm guessing that the global chat server(s) only take periodic checkpoints, and if your mail wasn't included in the latest checkpoint, you can lose it when globals recover from a crash. I've had stuff in mails for a couple of weeks that survived known global crashes, so it's definitely not that everything in mail storage goes kaput every time globals go down. That would be ridiculously unreliable - we couldn't depend on it at all unless the other party was online and accepted all email attachments immediately.

Thank goodness for paranoia! While I have been using the e-mail system to temporarily "store" recipes, I was too worried about a glitch eating my e-mails to actually e-mail myself anything but common IO recipes and temp power recipes. I also did a bunch of crafting this weekend, so if I lost any e-mails it was 3 or 4 common IOs at most.

Still it would have been nice to know about this upfront. And to anyone saying the Devs never intended the e-mail system to be storage, I can't argue with that, but they had to know that's how players were going to use it. If they truely didn't then they are scarily out of touch with their customers.

I remember hearing in open beta that for i17 that there was a 30 day limit, and additionally on the forums after i17 went live. I do not recall seeing actual patch notes on it though. This information I speak of was mostly stuff players had figured out on their own one way or another during the initial closed beta itself. I was already making sure my stuff was claimed within reasonable time limits, so luckily I wasn't affected.

If this information was not made explicitly clear in any way, shape or form, then the Devs need to sit down and have a talk with those in charge of sending out clear and precise patch notes.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to call anyone stupid nor am I trying to blame any "one" person, but if bottled water deserves a stamped expiration date, maybe emails should get a "stamp" too, no?

It never even crossed my mind to use email as a storage for expensive items/large amounts of inf. There are numerous reports of emails getting lost after global crashes and whatnot.

That said, this really should've been anounced at the release of I17.

not every mmo does actually.... one of my old mmo's i had stuff stored in emails for over a year (and there was no way of storiing stuff unless it was in your inv or email).

If you have lost items to the purge, send in a petition. Try to include as much detail as you can, including the global the item was sent from and the server the sender was on if you have this information.

The GM team appears committed to making this right and it appears that the powers that be have at least privately told them to just fix it. My dealings with the GM team so far have been superb.

Thanks Avatea for you the Customer Support team on fixing this problem.

As for the rest of you, your right, how silly for the devs not to predict every single little problem with their crystal ball. How dare they!

Now if they can just add a SG invite I can send to my alts that would be great!

Thank you Avatea. Problems are going to happen. Sometimes things slip through the cracks. And given human nature, people are going to react negatively to having these things happen. I'll be the first to admit that my own reactions were harsher than they should have been and for that I apologize.

Thank you for the time and effort to make this right.
