Polite Civilians!

I was watching a line of NPCs walking along, and I was bemused by the rustling sound of the grocery bag one was carrying. So I moved beside them, listening, when I accidently got in front of the civilian.

He politely turned around and walked the other way.

That's right, I was not rudely shoved out of the way. No, this NPC, carrying their humble sack of groceries from the store, presumably walking home, politely decided to go back the way they came rather than push me out of the way.

I then stood in front of a line of NPCs, and they ALL reversed direction!

This awesome power must never be used for evil purposes!

So I am finally stronger than the girly girls who used to shove me out of the way! Yippee!!

"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"

"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."

Well, qualify that Yippee!!

I did not realize it, but there was a TREE behind me! When I tried standing in front of NPCs again, after making the above triumphant post, it was back to being a weenie!

I was confused, since I had only moved a short way. So I went back to where it had been happening and realized that the tree had given me my heft. Apparently my PC is considered wider than the tree, which the NPCs would normally walk around.

I was near the Wentworths in Steel. For all I know, that is the only place it will ever work.

So girly girls now shove me out of the way again. *heavy sigh*

Time to take it out on some AVs or EBs then!

Yeah, trees are really the highest class of enemy - if you see something that cons as a Tree, run, because even if you can solo a GM it'll mop the floor with you. The bastards have hidden spawns, too, so even if you know they're there, you can't do anything about it... they're just lying in wait, and someday they'll wipe out all of us.

Yes, yes indeed. Master Thundershield has taught us well.

Gosh darn them civilians! ¬¬

This is actually a major annoyance around Galaxy girl statue, where a lot of people on Union tend to hang around and chat. Unless you are stood on the actual plinth bit, there is a very good chance of getting shunted around by civilians halfway through a sentance...small QoL thing, but irritating.

Not only do civilians have the power to push you out of the way, they also have the amazing power to penetrate stealth. My stealthy toons will be on the street after covertly dispatching bad guys and ordinary citizens will pass them and wave. Sometimes they even address my character by name. How the heck do they see me? Fortunately, they don't seem inclined to abuse the power like Rikti drones or Nemesis snipers.

Never underestimate the power of a girly girl.

This hasn't been something I pay much attention to, but I recall that on redside, sometimes a civvie would approach, see me for the villain I was and then turn 180 degrees and walk away, sort of like "hm, robot minions, evil-looking armored bunnygirl... to hell with that noise, I'm not gonna get involved in THAT; I'm outta here..." moment.

I could be wrong but I think it normally happened during street combat.

Civs run away from you redside if they see you beating up someone.

I thought they sort of ducked a bit, and slowly turned and crept away, looking out for anyone that be coming after them.

(With apologies to Joyce Kilmer.)

I believe that I shall never see
An NPC blocker as lovely as a tree.

A tree whose stalwart trunk is prest
Against the NPCs flowing crest.

A tree that renders anew all day
While leafy arms in the "wind" do sway.

A tree that may after battle wear
Ragdoll Council in her hair.

Upon whose branches Outcast have jumped
Fleeing heroes whose blood is pumped.

Poems are made by fools like me
But nothing stops NPCs like a tree.

The worst place in the world for being pushed around used to be Ghost Falcon. Nothing quite like standing there in the enhancement screen doing some combining, then hearing the sound of combat, and exiting that screen to find out you've somehow been pushed down the block into the range of a Nemesis or 9. It only happened once, for the record, but still.

Of course these days the RWZ is an easier place to buy and sell, if you're bothering with anything other than IOs at all.

Exactly!

Haha, just when I got done shedding tears of laughter from the original two posts... Nuclear Toast made me shed a tear with that lovely poem rewrite!

Haha!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. Maybe that's why I like redside better, the better reactions from the civvies.

Blueside, all I can recall was them telling me "Maybe I was wrong about capes." What, like 50% of the population thinks "capes" are bad people?! Next time your purse is getting snatched, lady, I'm just walking right past!

Well done, NT. Kinda gets you right there, you know?

Actually, I seem to recall a few NPCs running away from my villains on occasion. A few weeks ago, I was standing around the Devil's Coat Tails in Cap au Diable and suddenly a few dudes started running away with their hands in the air. I guess it varies by neighborhood?

I'm figuring they think of them as vigilantes with no regard for protocol.

I know when I have my demons out, some civilians flee in terror.

Not only are civilians still pushing our heroes around, but now they are honking at them as well. Unbelievable.
