How about a tie-in with Project Runway? Since we have one of the best character creators out there, it seems to me this might be a natural. Have the contestants design their own super-hero costume using the tools here as part one. Then as part two, they actually have to implement the design in real materials on a real model. They would have a choice of using a female or male model.

Sexy Jay would of course be the face of CoX for this challenge.

I'm interested in hearing what, if any, marketing is done for CoX. I subscribe to multiple gaming mags, go to EB Games (Canadian here!) regularly, visit a regular rotation of gaming websites, and talk to other gamers at my work, and CoX is a nonentity. No posters, mag ads, web ads, or discussion. It has no presence. It's kind of a cliche here but is there actually any marketing at all going on? I realize that as an older game it's harder to get money to market it, but it surely mustn't be impossible. On the other hand, I also realize that you can't just throw money at every damn fool idea the intern comes up with because you actually do want to turn advertising dollars in purchases and subscriptions.

Will we be seeing a big rampup of advertising et cetera for Going Rogue? It's getting pretty close.

It kinda bothers me that I play this great game and it's been around longer than WoW (I think) and yet nobody has ever heard of it except people who already play it. Maybe it's because I am Canadian and live in a remote community that I don't see anything? Gonna feel pretty silly if a huge dogpile of people comes in with cellphone pics of CoX billboards on their subway or something.

Finally, loosen the gag on the other rednames so they can let slip some more information for us

I do think TV ads are neat.

But I would be curious as to how much it cost to get Mr. T out there, and how many customers he brought in.

I do know that Mohawk grenade drove me nuts.

There are things we can do, and things that would be pretty challenging to do. We'll do whatever makes sense, but that's where you guys come in. The more you tell us what you're thinking (in well-thought out details), the better we can work with you.

Oh wow. I just realized...a redname just posted in my thread!!

I'll be honest. I love reading posts where folks think War Witch or Positron cower before me.

Do you honestly think I can rein in War Witch? She's awesome. I wear a button-down t-shirt. There is no comparison.

many of us are of the mind that CoH marketing either does not exist or exists for the soul purpose of limiting to completely stone-walling any new and exciting information concerning new issues, expansions, content, etc.

I'm not a marketing expert but I've always felt that the role of marketing was to keep the community excited and informed about the game and to kindle interest and inform those that aren't CoH gamers.

how you go about achieving the above is your line of expertise. I'm no marketing expert.

P.s. I know for sure the last thing I want to read about the marketing personel is a lack of self-esteem. Confidence, pride and excitement is a huge selling point. Humility has a tendency to make people look weak.

I can't get into specifics, but I wouldn't be surprised if you start seeing a LOT more Going Rogue over the next few months.

And if you can convince a whole bunch of people to come in with cellphone pics of CoX billboards, I'll be the first to make that my top priority. I wonder if there are any conventions coming up.....

As for being Canadian, I understand your plight. Convincing people to watch Due South was nuts. "Yes, it's Canadian, but it's GOOD." And I can't believe they cancelled Power Play in the US after 5 episodes.....

Nope, but marketing do have the final word or do they not in what Devs should say? Or who decides what the Devs can and cannot say?
So do you have a tag team partner for the European community or is it you that is the goto-man for both server list communities (US and EU)?

I get the impression that marketing loves data. While you're getting some good suggestions here, have you considered distributing a brief survey to current players querying on websites they frequent, publications they read, and so forth, that might allow you to hone in on optimal markets to attract more excellent people like the ones we already have? (Embedded assumptions are numerous. Feel free to frown at them. They don't go away, but frowns at least make them feel self-conscious.)

What's the over/under on how long it takes P_P to find this thread?

I suggest that you set up a donation page so that, if each player wants to donate $1.00, the money gathered would go towards advertising CoH during a highly watched NBC program.

That or just keep the $7.00 donated and buy an ice cream cake for the office.

Welcome to the asylum!

1. What kind of deal has NCSoft with Chuck and Big Bang Theory that Aion and CoH merchandise gets product placement? Do you and the NCSoft Dept. of Evil plan to expand on that kind of marketing?

2. While commercials are very expensive, you guys don't think one targeted at superhero fans for all those TV superhero cartoons and live action series and bumpers for superhero movies in theaters wouldn't be worth the cost?

3. Drop off tons of Bootleg disks at comic stores.

4. When Going Rogue comes out, get after all the gaming websites and Metacritic to re-do their game rating and combine CoH and CoV into one product review. Those six year old reviews with CoH and CoV being separately rated is detrimental to CoH press. Especially since a lot of sites gave CoV a higher score than CoH, but when people look up the ratings for CoH, they see the old, lower CoH score.

Wow. GMTA. I've thought about this for years. I'd set the challenge thusly: Tim says, "Designers, your model is attending a high-fashion costume ball with the theme of 'super heroes'. So, she is your client for this challenge. To help with the design process, you'll be using the costume tool of NCSoft's popular super-hero online game, City of Heroes...."

Ahh... so the Devs and Marketing are playing the old, "Go ask your Mother..." "Go ask your Father..." game with us! I knew it!

Wouldn't there be concerns of tackiness if you started seeing Billboards advertising shampoo?
We're set in present day. For most games, ads are out of place-- seeing a shampoo ad in Borderlands, Mass Effect, or Dragon Age is going to be totally wrong. But we already have advertisements in the game. They're just fake. Also, we can disable real ads if we want, and return to the fake ads! There are no drawbacks (though I'd suggest reserving some billboards for rotating fake ads so we don't have to miss out on the clever ones while helping the game's revenue).

Here's the deal: for in-game advertising to be both effective and not immersion breaking, you need to have targeted ads, modified ads that fit in the game, and varied ads. The Derek Jeter shoes ad was ineffective for three reasons:

1) We're mostly a bunch of geeks. We're not going to buy expensive sports shoes. If you advertise food or tech stuff in the game, we might actually buy it. A large segment of the MMO population plays their MMO more than they watch TV or read magazines, so that's an opportunity. If there's a billboard advertisement for Mountain Dew Throwback or Papa John's Pizza in CoH, and I see it on a regular basis, it's not only going to make the world feel more real, it's going to be on my mind when I'm thirsty or hungry.

2) The ad was way too clean in the Rogue Isles. It should have been faded with some graffiti on it. It was jarring and annoying.

3) It was the only ad running. If you'd had 4+ different ads running, it would blend in with the city and be less likely to be turned off. Every billboard in my town is not occupied by the same advertiser, and seeing it like that in-game is too ham-fisted and backfires just like when you're watching a TV show and the SAME ad is shown every commercial break (sometimes twice). It serves as an irritation instead of a reminder.

This. Oh gods, this. Done right, the publicity could be great - "hey, not only have they been around for six years, but look at all they've done!"

And I agree with the earlier sentiment of taking a survey of the players for site recommendations and whatnot - you could potentially datamine hundreds of sites to get the word out about CoH. Hell, take a cue from bands and whatnot and form "Street Teams" - players who volunteer to represent City of Heroes at everything from local gaming events to smaller 'cons.

I havent read through the entire thread. If this has been covered ahead of time, I do appologize.

CoX has had a presense at various electronic gaming shows. And that is good. But, i dont know if that is really reaching new audiences. Chances are, if folks are at an E-show. They already know about the game.

CoX is a game about superheroes. And you mostly see superheroes in comics. Maybe have a bigger presense at some of the larger Comic Conventions around the country.

Here's one that I always thought that CoX should have done from the beginning:

You know those soda machines in the entrance of the office and warehouse mishes? Sell the ad space to a soda company. I think it'd be awesome to actually see real world soda machines in game.

And continue making the comic series that has already been made?

Even targeted advertising can be tricky. I have a friend who plays CoH who'd much rather see diaper ads vs computer ads. Just not interested in tech.
This is a risk in advertising in any format. You assess your audience, and determine what is most likely to be effective.

Quote:
If we ever did it, we would make sure it works for everyone. I don't think any of you would like to see something haphazard, no matter how cool it could be.
You do know it's already been done, right? That you've got the system in the game already, and used it for a while?

THIS. I'd also advise that you put some serious effort into the costume design for any ads/videos you make from now on. Most of your promotional videos and screenshots have what looks like random-button costume designs. They're ugly, I mean stuff like the Huge model with purple and orange bio-organic skin with dragon wings using dark green fire-blast. Design characters to use in those videos.

I'm still unsure whats happening in regards to marketing in the EU. Are there any plans to promote the game over here on a large scale?

I can get behind the Street Teams idea. Like, official Paragon Studios Marketing Sidekick. Anywho, when was the last time there was a print ad. I mean, in an actual comic book.

Also, give us the opportunity. You know how? STUFF. We can't buy anything that isn't digital from the store--I'm talking simple crap, like the stuff you already sell at Cons. And update the front page of the website--you know it doesn't even have GR for sale?

Well, either way, welcome sir. Excellent to have you aboard.

Wow, I didn't even know EU had four servers - the only ones I hear about are Defiant and Union.

Can see where that would be indicative of a problem.

For myself, I'd like to play on the EU servers, too. I just:
a) need a faster PC, which I will have this Monday, and
b) would like to do so withOUT having to buy the game again.

Any way b can be fixed?

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.
