Mentor Project

Welcome New Players!

Originally from Protector, the New Player Council was created with the intent of making your exploration of the game an easier one by offering assistance directly in game. We do this by using a global channel, and also by offering direct partnerships with knowledgeable volunteers through the Mentor Project.

If you are an more experienced player looking to share your time with new players (neophytes), feel free to fill in the Mentor application form here, or through the external website of the Mentor Project: http://citymentorproject.mmopost.com (it is on the Join page).

Detailed information about the Mentor Project can be found below:

TL;DR version:
  1. Join / be invited to the N P C global channel
  2. Join in a partnership with a Mentor (optional)
  3. Join a N P C SGs / VGs (optional)
  4. For Neophytes: Graduate and move onto becoming a Mentor (optional)

General Guidelines:
  1. 3 roles defined: Coordinators, Mentors, and Neophytes.
  2. No official committee or leadership for this project. All Mentors and Coordinators have the same "weight" within the Mentor Project, although Coordinators could assist in resolving issues between Mentors and Neophytes.
  3. A global channel is used to help coordinate things, and provide another layer to the support network. All Mentors will be OP in this channel, named "N P C" (note the spaces). This is the only mandatory criteria in participating in this project, regardless of role.
  4. Optional mentoring partnerships between more experienced player (Mentor) and less experienced player (Neophyte) exist. They are:
    1. Not enforced, but open - Either party can opt to leave at any time if it doesn't work out for whatever reasons. Mentors will have 100% control over how they can assist the newbie in their care, including what time is spent doing so.
    2. The mentor has no duty towards the newbie except to act as guide. As such, he/she could answer questions, help the Neophyte find a supergroup or start one, team up if schedules permit, etc. The Neophyte will be made to understand that the Mentor is not responsible for his/her enjoyment of the game, nor will there be any expectations of PLing, loot, etc.
    3. Mentors will be free to cover areas of CoH gaming they want with the neophytes, in private, using their judgement about the pertinence to neophyte's game style. This should cover questions re: farming and powerlevelling. To avoid un-needed discussions in the global channel we should keep these talks private. We don't want to impose our own likes / dislikes to them, yet they should be free to learn (or at least find out about) about all aspects of the game.
  5. Graduation ceremonies could occur every 3-4 months for Neophytes. They can then become a Mentor if they like, or move on to other activities.
  6. SG will be available later on for experimentation on base building / SG management. Within any SGs created for/by neophytes, the tier 1 role would be that of the Coordinator. Tier 2 reserved for Mentors / graduated Neophytes. All other ranks used for neophytes. Tier names will probably fluctuate due to experimentation. This will be applied to any VGs as well. Coalitions with established SGs / VGs will be considered.

Latest news (09/2010): Given that the Mentor Project caters specifically to a demographic that Paragon Wiki can also assist, we are converging our efforts and the Mentor Project will now offer maintenance and support for Paragon Wiki’s Players Guide to the Cities.

We take this opportunity to thank each and every single player who volunteers his (or her) time to improve someone else’s enjoyment of City of Heroes, City of Villains and Going Rogue. Our gaming community is a much more friendly place with your efforts, and for that we are all very grateful.

We currently have mentors available on Freedom, Virtue, Justice, Protector, Triumph and Pinnacle for direct partnerships, but all mentors can be reached via the N P C channel at any time.

Feel free to ask any questions here, whether you're a new player looking for info or a potential Mentor.

Note to players interested in mentoring: if you don't see your server mentioned in the post above, that means it's not currently represented. Players seeking assistance can still access the N P C channel, but there is no official mentor presence yet.

Be the first to launch a Mentor Project on your home server!

PS - Stay tuned next week for some interesting news.

This actually sounds really neat, and I wish there was something like this when I was a lowbie. I'm on an established server already (Justice) and have mostly villains, but my main question is this: I have two jobs plus volunteering, so I don't get to play a lot. I'd love to be a mentor, but my play schedule is... erratic. Is that okay?

Edit: Please forgive my ignorance of shorthand, but what's OP? As in "All Mentors will be OP in this channel, named "N P C" "

Current Main: Thudd. 36 SS/Invul Brute on Justice
50's - Bitter Hatred Bots/FF/Mu MM - Rogue Wyvern Arch/Elec/Elec Blaster - Stonewerk Stone/Stone/Stone Brute - GB Nasty Thugs/Storm/Lev MM

Power and Chaos!

That's actually another term for "moderator" = "OPerator", but I should have went with the former.

As a matter of fact, since there are no obligations placed upon Mentors except to help out according to what time / resources they have available, that would be more than okay.

It would be downright fantastic to see someone take some time out of an already loaded schedule to invest it in someone else's enjoyment of CoH.

Thanks!

Oddly enough, when you called it, it wasn't visible from my end yet.

And a "Thank You" to Phillygirl for proposing we ask in the first place.

Really nice idea. I was lucky enough to be on Skype with the two friends who introduced me to this game. They were able to take me through it and help with enhancements and the travel system. Having someone to answer questions at the start makes a big difference. Good luck with this.

*Blushes*

I am hoping that new people who come to this forum for help will see this at the top of the list and join the channel.

I always remember just how clueless i was when i started playing (not that i am not still clueless lol) so it's nice to help someone the way I always had help.

I think this is a great idea. I filled out one of the Mentor forms a few days back. Let me know when you want me to begin my duties.

Hi there! We Taxibots have been helping out on Infinity for a while now, but I really like the idea of having an official program where heroes help other heroes. One of my favorite things in the world to do is to meet new heroes, and a lot of times, you can find me just hanging out in Atlas Park looking for new heroes to help. I'm not very good at fighting, but I think I am pretty good at answering questions and helping new heroes get used to the city. I filled out the form, so let me know if I can help!

Yay, Infinity Taxis!!!
Try my City without Taxis story (1679) if you get a chance and let me know what you think!

That's great Taxibot_Belle!

Wonderful to have you join up.

Given the already well appreciated altruist nature of the Taxibots on the CoH servers, I'm hoping you'll be the first of many 'bots to consider joining / forming their own chapter.

And we now have representation on the Champion server, which I believe completes the set!

Victory and Infinity had already been added last week.

To the latest group of volunteers: I've fallen a little behind in processing applications and updating our lists.

You can still join the channel and recruit new players to do the same, offer assistance, etc.

I should be caught up some time this weekend.

Go forth and assist.

PS - for those with GuildPortal accounts (free registration): http://citymentorproject.mmopost.com is up and running.

Were you asking about the position for coordinator on Liberty?

That's still open.

Welcome guys - the list of registered has been updated: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?k...=0&output=html

It's also linked from the Roster section of the Guildportal website.

Attention Frustrated Players!!!!

Have you ever been on a team with an AE Baby and just wanted to pull your hair out?
Well, NOW there is hope, that's right... point them in the direction of the "Mentor Project"
Concider this rehab for AE Babies, this also works for Ebay Babies as well... Do not delay!

Example:

Typical Team Leader: Hey, Pug level 50 tank, can you please herd that mob?
AE Baby Tank: Um, I have no idea what that means, should I Heal instead?
Typical Other Player: Are you !@#$ing kidding me? You are a level 50 tank!!! Heal!?! UGH!!!
Typical Helpful Player: Well, the best thing for you to do noob tank, is join "NPC" channel!
AE Baby Tank: What is that?
Typical Helpful Player: Glad you asked, it's a channel dedicated to helping out people that have little or no clue about this game. It is an open forum so to speak, for asking any and all questions to help you better understand the in's and out's of playing certain types of toons! It is designed to help make you a better player!!!
Ebay Baby: Hey, I just bought this account, and it has a few level 50's on it will this channel help me as well?
Typical Helpful Player: Why yes it will!!!
Ebay Baby: Swell!!!

It's better to save the Mystery, than surrender to the secret...

That's certainly an creative way to use the services.

But yeah, that could work too.

Same goes for players who just need a little assistance to get back into the flow of things after a prolonged absence from Paragon City.

I wish I'd heard about this sooner I wouldn't have waited six months to come back from my break! I've been saying for years some kind of Guide program would be great to have in CoH!
