Mentor Project
This actually sounds really neat, and I wish there was something like this when I was a lowbie. I'm on an established server already (Justice) and have mostly villains, but my main question is this: I have two jobs plus volunteering, so I don't get to play a lot. I'd love to be a mentor, but my play schedule is... erratic. Is that okay?
Edit: Please forgive my ignorance of shorthand, but what's OP? As in "All Mentors will be OP in this channel, named "N P C" " |
It does my heart good to read that you are volunteering. That's important stuff, keep it up!

@Ukase
It's simply impressive that we've now reached 70 registered mentors in this grassroots project.
CoH is definitely living up to it's reputation as one of the friendliest and most helpful MMO communities.
Tips for new mentors:
- If you haven't been made a moderator in the N P C channel yet, ask one of the other mentors / moderators know that you've applied. They can check to see if your name is on the list and then change your status.
- Consider joining the external website (free account). The Info page is getting fleshed out with data pertaining to the game and now will incorporate server specific entries as well. There are also bound to be some topics in the forums which might interest you, or even some topics you can suggest for discussion yourself. You can also announce partnership news there, if you want, and share activity ideas.
- Some servers have taken to promoting their own branch of the Mentor Project in their server section. This is encouraged, especially from server coordinators. It is not cross-posting since every server can propose their own event ideas, promotions, etc.
- Spread the word, especially with new players.
Some stats:
Mentors per server*:
Protector: 17
Virtue: 16
Justice: 14
Freedom: 13
Liberty: 7
Triumph: 6
Infinity: 4
Pinnacle: 4
Victory: 4
Champion: 3
Guardian : 3
Union (EU): 1
Training Room: 1
* Some mentors are active on multiple servers, hence the disparity in total number of mentors per server and actual registrations.
█ Players Guide to the Cities
I was just listening to the podcast, and I was delighted that the Taxibots were mentioned. We have been trying for quite a while to welcome heroes new to Paragon City on Infinity, and in fact, it's what I send a LOT of my time doing. One thing you can catch me doing quite often is hanging out in Atlas Park just watching heroes as they talk to Ms. Liberty. I look for their Veteran badges to see if they're new. And I so love meeting new heroes. They're always SOOOO nice!
Anyway, I was going to ask, what is this Coordinator title, and what do they do? What kind of things have others been doing to help out new heroes? I usually look for them in Atlas Park and offer to team up with them for a little while, and offer little tips as we go along and answer questions. I also give tours, around Atlas Park especially, of the badges and plaques to let heroes know a little about the history of the place. Do others do that kind of thing too? Are there other ways that others help out? I'm just looking for neat ideas!
Ooh, has anyone coordinated any kind of official event to help out new heroes? I was thinking maybe sometimes at Infinity, maybe trying to put together a task force or something with a heavy emphasis on new heroes, or at heroes who have not really tried task forces yet. We used to have one every Saturday that the Taxis ran where we tried to emphasize that we were taking it a little slower than a lot of teams, to give everyone a chance to get what's going on and learn about task forces. Maybe I'll try something like that! I've also thought about having something like a "Veterans Fair," where we have a lot of heroes who have been in Paragon City for a while together somewhere like Atlas Park, and we advertise that we're there, and anyone who has any questions about anything can drop by and talk to people who probably have a bit more experience at stuff, whether it is about fighting villains, the best use of powers, information about the city's history, how to succeed at various tasks, shopping at Wentworth's, how to get badges, or whatever!
Anyway, I think this is a wonderful idea, and I really hope it takes off!
Yay, Infinity Taxis!!!
Try my City without Taxis story (1679) if you get a chance and let me know what you think!

So glad to see more taxibots joining in.
The coordinators are basically the "go to" people when questions arise for server events and any prize / loot involved.
For example, on Protector, I handle the hero-side loot while Sokyoku handles red-side. When events are proposed by other mentors, we can hand out some of that if the idea requires it. Others servers have only 1 coordinator for now, but they'll probably want to have 2 on each side to facilitate things later on.
As for a scheduled time for meeting new players, that's entirely left up to each server's mentors. You know your server's scheduling / style best, after all.
Before the Mentor Project, Protector had started the New Player Welcoming Night which was intended to run every month or so. The schedule fluctuated, but when these nights occurred we would ask around the server for volunteers to see what kind of events could be run for new players.
Some of the ones you mention were done (I did the Atlas Park badge/plaque runs a few times), as were others like intro to PVP, sewer runs, even trivia contests.
Tip: Anyone who volunteered to run events was scheduled the first time we did this. some events overlapped due to time constraints so we limited them to 3-4 on the following event.
Since you've already applied at the external website, you can check out the forums there and share event ideas with other mentors. There is also a thread in our CoH boards social groups, IIRC.
And that Veteran's Fair idea sounds really great. Can you report back (at external site) on how it went if you do try it?
█ Players Guide to the Cities
this sounds interesting i remember when i was a new player, i felt as i was on my own but some vets helped me but this is good
I would just like to mention, I just filled out the forms, and the ending thank-you message from Stalemate has a typo. The end of the message is as follows, truncated
"...what the next steps."
And then it just ends after steps. I am guessing a "will be" or somesuch was intended, but got removed or clipped.
Thanks much for such an awesome program for everybody.

Good eye.
Thanks for reporting that.

If you haven't joined a global channel, you're not really looking for team.

See the first post on this thread for links to the registration form (quick, painless) if you haven't already filled that out Warface. You can list off your areas of expertise there and also decide just how involved you want to be in regards to mentorship.
Join the "N P C" channel and once the registration is in we'll upgrade you to moderator, like the other registered mentors.*
*Registration not required to join the channel and participate, but definitely useful if you want to be server coordinator, or be kept in the loop of the Mentor Project's planning.

Nice find!
I also have been looking at this page of the Paragon Wiki, as a potential reference for neophytes who are looking for more of a self-help solution:

MENTORS!
As we prepare for the next step in the Mentor Project's growth, we are trying to fill in the roles of coordinators for the following servers:
(1) Freedom
(1) Justice
(0) Pinnacle
(0) Virtue
(1) Liberty
(0) Guardian
(0) Infinity
(2) Protector
(1) Victory
(0) Champion
(0) Triumph
The number inside the brackets indicates how many coordinators are currently active on that server. 2 coordinators (one per side) would be ideal, but 1 is still appreciated if the player can handle both sides.
The EU servers are already coordinated by a mentor who's home server is Union, but if you're on EU servers and interested in assisting him, please let us know.
Coordinators act as a server liaison, and are also trusted to hold any loot collected for promoting the Mentor Project. They may also be called upon for conflict resolution. In the future, this dynamic role will be expanded upon and further refined as dictated by the needs of the project.
As originally defined, there will never be anyone demanding of your time or resources in the Mentor Project - even if you are a coordinator. But know that this role might be a better fit for those who are interested in getting more involved in this, and have an interest in promoting the project on their home server(s).
Please send me a PM if you're interested in taking up this role, or if you'd like to propose someone else based on your appreciation of their experience and skills.
There are some very interesting server specific events coming down the pipe, so if you haven't signed up and / or consulted the GuildPortal forums lately, it is strongly recommended that you start doing so.

I really like the idea of this project. I think itÂ’s a great opportunity for experienced players to share their knowledge with people new to the game.
I have filled out the Mentor Application Form, and am very interested in participating in a partnership to Mentor a new player. I also joined the ingame channel and made an account for the Mentor Project website. Please contact me if my mentoring is needed!
Thanks,
@SaraMC
Welcome aboard, Sara.
Also, we may start to see WoW refugees swinging by these parts.

I don't know if this is still running, but I'd like to help in a mentoring role on Pinnacle/Champion; filled out the application on the forums.
Questions about the game, either side? /t @Neuronia or @Neuronium, with your queries!

We're now topping 85 mentors.
For a grassroots project which was promoted almost exclusively by word of mouth and some much appreciated airtime with Off The Cape, I'd say it's quite active.
Some have not joined the N P C channel yet.
Some servers still need coordinator(s).
Only about 25% of our registered mentors have also signed up at the Mentor Project website - where eventually most of our "mentor business" will be conducted.
But see, that's the beauty of it.
Mentors don't "have" to do anything beyond helping out with questions and the like in the N P C channel. You can be as active as your free time allows - no further obligations.
Long term success will ultimately be measured in how much the mentors get involved in promoting MP and creating / participating in mentoring activities - and recruiting new players to join in.
A few mentors are already carving out a name for themselves doing what they can on their home servers. I also know of a few events coming down the pipe which will pick things up a notch or two for the MP.
Thanks!
Also, how do I go about taking part in a partnership with a novice? Are the mentor and novice assigned to each other by leaders of the project, or do you just offer your services to a new member yourself? Thank you! -SaraMC |
For now, there are a few mentors who joined in already associated with a new player or 2.
If you're interested in a direct mentoring partnership, I suggest you advertise (while avoiding spamming) the Mentor Project on your server(s) and your own availability in the N P C channel once new players have joined it.
Each mentor is not only allowed to do what they want as far as mentoring activities are concerned - they're encouraged to do so. There may be some cross-server events in the future, but for now we're still gathering steam.
Good luck!

Entirely up to the mentors to offer their services to players they feel would be a good "match".

I have actually talked to few new players who have trial accounts at the moment, but are considering purchasing the game. They love the idea of having mentors to help them out when they need it.
I've filled out the application, and I thought I'd let you know that I'm happy to volunteer to mentor players on Justice or Virtue. I don't have any high levels toons on virtue yet but I am leveling there currently. This is an excellent idea and I'd like to help out.
Attention all Mentor Project Neophytes:
In conjunction with Justice Events, there will be a spot available to team with a Redname!
(Info is here)
Here's what this means to you.
First, there will be a total of two Neophytes who are present and subject to the qualifications listed in the Auction rules who will have the opportunity to run a tf/sf with a Redname (and a few others on the team). In a nutshell, you don't have to spend any inf to qualify, just be a registered Mentor Project neophyte with 2 vet badges or less and be present to have a chance on the team.
You do not need to be a Justice Neophyte to win, but as listed in the rules, you must have a level 10 toon on Justice and be present at the Auction to win.

I thought about something the mentor project should take on. TFs that consist of all new to the TF players except for one mentor. Right now jumping into any TF can be hugely intimidating for somebody who hasn't done any TF before or even those who have done a few. You get in the TF and the leader barks orders or else everybody just automatically sprints to the next position knowing what they need to do and how.
Admittedly not all TFs are like this but many of them are. This undoubtedly puts many newer or more casual players off of jumping into some of the best content the game has to offer. So a good solution would be to have TFs that will only take people new to the TF and a mentor who won't tell them what to do but rather will listen to their decisions and give them information or possible strategies if they hit a sticking point.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
I'd certainly consider that to be a viable idea, but at present, it's up to the individual mentors to coordinate.
I fondly remember my first ITF, which took over two hours as a great learning experience.

I have toon who can more or less solo the lower level SFs, and I have done some of them hundreds of times already
I've been playing for a couple years and will probably fill the form later tonight.
This is a great initiative from all of you and I hope many people can benefit from it.
Je te souhaite la bienvenue, en passant.
