Mentor Project

Also worth noting, even for all the other official registrants who have not benefited from this yet, so I'm making it more visible:

Please let me or another registered mentor know you have completed the form(s) so that you can get mod status in the N P C channel.

There is a number of mentors who either have not joined the chan, or remain unavailable for a status change.

Current mentors should already know that a current list of officially registered mentors is readily available on the roster section of the GuildPortal website, should they need to verify someone's status before promoting.

Welcome again!

This reminds me of the old "Helper" tag from the good olde days of Star Wars Galaxies. BEFORE it was so wrongfully ruined by Sony.

Ive been on a Hero break for a long time and have recently came back. I'm not a number cruncher nor the best at the lore but more then glad to help on Victory if its needed.

@Umbradomo is the handle.

Will look for you in the N P C channel tonight guys.

I just received confirmation of your registrations.

I've updated the roster listing (the one visible from the GuildPortal site) with all the current registrations I had pending.

We're just over 140 registered mentors (no numbers for the unregistered)! If you haven't joined the N P C channel yet, please do so.

As you may already know, the Mentor Project is a loosely-knit community of like-minded volunteers who want to help new or returning players. This can be done in a general consultation role, or a more personal partnership can be set up.

In any case, the mentors have free reign as to how involved they want to be, how much time they wish to spend, and how they'd like to do it. The Mentor Project website (for mentors) and N P C global channel are means of communication put at their disposal.

2011 looms over the horizon and there are more events coming up to cater to new players, but until then...

Happy New Year everyone!

I'm new to the game, how do I become a Neophyte? Eventually I would like to become a mentor - but I need to start at the bottom and learn from the ground up.

I dont' fully know what to think. Mind you the new system is great, but now that the game has a built in help channel meant to do exactly what we do along with a built in way to identify mentor and neophyts, although not under that name, I am simply not sure whether a separate group is even needed. It might be, it just seems to early to tell how the new system will be used.

With the announcement of the new Player Help System in City of Heroes, I'm left pondering how this will affect our operations.

I'll be honest: I find it hard to see this a as a tool we can use when the reality is, it is a system bypasses our group entirely.

We haven't been in operation that long. But if our presence has managed to influence in any way the implementation of the PHS I see it as a bittersweet moment.

We've demonstrated that such a system had a place in CoH, with our 150 registered mentors, our neophytes who benefited from the project, and other volunteers.

That's a good thing.

But on the other hand, with a system built directly into CoH now, it's hard to see a future for the Mentor Project.

What do you guys think?

I'm split as well. I think it's a great feature. I do prefer our global channel if for no other reason than it's the project home. Heck, I'm still flying the Paragon City Mentors flag on Justice.

Soooo when I logged in to i20 for the first time I was thrilled there was this great new way to help people. I was very excited and of course I had my shinny new helper title to assist new people.

Then I started seeing people I knew (veteran players) who had help me titles as jokes or cause of the color, ok not so bad haha lil funny. So a helper comes along and maybe they waste their time not so big a deal.

Then I logged into one of my Freedom PvP toons and start reading AC chat, the person talking in arena chat was going on about how they took the helper title and couldn't wait to grief new players. Well my excitement about the new system just crashed. I hadn't even considered the potential available now to grief new players.

Now we have a new help system that has a great potential for identifying new players and helping them but because of a few a$$hats out there it has an even greater potential to grief new players. For that reason alone I think the mentor project still has a place and now I think we need to be conscious of the potential griefing and if there is anyway to combat it.

One way to combat such abuses on our end would be simply to alert our people to be on the lookout for low level "Help Me" toons and go out of our way to contact each and every one of them and welcome them to the game. That way, even if the jerks do show up, at least they know there are genuinely friendly people ready to help them.

In fact, that's one way our group could survive, even if the new system takes off--as an unofficial welcoming committee, using the system to seek out new players and welcome them.

I don't think this system affects us in the slightest.

I agree with the others, Stalemate.

The new system implemented by Paragon, will allow us to more easily identify and interact with new players as we wont have to wait for them to find us, or hear about the project through through an announcement or from the forums.

I'd like to say that I'm surprised that some people would take advantaged of this system to grief others, but I'm not.

I just heard about this in the "OMG FREE TO PLAY" freakout threads, and I would love to join. I've been playing since the game launched, with a few breaks now and then, and I've always helped people out where I could.

Great!

The way we do our mentoring / assisting may change and adapt to how the game evolves, but one thing remains the same: new players can always use another friendly person to talk to.

If you haven't done so yet, please join the "N P C" global channel and use the application form on the first page if you'd like to be officially recognized in the chan.

The channel may not be active all the time, but that is expected as its role is turning more into a "teachers lounge" than a "welcome hall for new arrivals". That is simply a normal development since trial (and soon Free) players cannot access global chans, and the Helper System's impact on how mentors operate.

In fact, it's better to see the Mentor Project as an extension of the Helper System now, where one can go to seek information they may not have from the other mentors. ;-)

Welcome aboard.

Hi all,

Completely and utterly new to this game! Would anyone like to take me under their wing and learn the ropes? Currently playing around on Champion server (is this a good choice?) with my little lvl 3. Would massively appreciate any advice/help for a COMPLETE newbie

Thanks

I dont get on often, BUT I will be on tonight about 8:30 GMT I'll make a brand new character on Champion (If I dont have one, I'm a real altoholic) and I'll show you the ropes.

I joined the Proper N P C Channel a few nights ago so I'll catch some of the mentors later, if any are online. (First time I'll have spoken to them since the server merge!)

Champion is a pretty friendly server overall. You can use the Help channel and people will answer questions. I monitor it myself, and I've seen plenty of other folks answer questions too.

Just look at your chat pane in the bottom left there. There's a tab labeled "Help." Click on that, make sure the chat prompt changes to "Help:" and type away.

If the chat prompt doesn't change to "Help:" then you've probably locked it in some other channel (like "Team"). Click on the very small buttons just above the chat input line to switch it. Or use the slash-command /hc at any time to access the Help channel.

If you need help with something in particular, you can often get folks to come to you for assistance. That Help channel is server wide so it's better than using /broadcast or something similar. It hits all zones, not just the zone you're in.

And of course, joining the N P C (AKA - New Player Channel) allows you to have an extra dose of help across all servers at any time, drawing from knowledgeable, experienced folks - even a few from Paragon Wiki itself. Type /chan_join "N P C" and make sure to add it to your chat tab (right-click it, select Edit).

I don't play on Champion myself, but if you need a personal mentor I can look people up for you, or even supply a list of mentors from that server.

Welcome to the game!

Alright, I'd like to propose something I've already discussed with Stalemate. With the advent of I 21, we will have a ton of new players coming in over the first few days. I would like to propose that we organize what I am calling a new player boot camp.

The idea would be for use mentors to be available at the launch of Freedom to snag new players are they execute the tutorial, or through the help channel, and take them through the new sewer trial. Along the way, we would teach them the basics of how the game works, beyond the in game tutorial, answer questions, and at the end would hand out inf to get them started. I was thinking half a mil. Some like myself could provide that amount on their own, but we could collect some for those who might need it.

Any thoughts? We'll probably need to come with a very basic list of things to cover, just to keep us all on the same track.

Keep in mind, new players are even more likely to need things explained while still in the tutorial. The current tutorial is an actual zone and not just an instance. This means you can create a character in there and log out. The character can stay in the tutorial forever. If the new one works the same way, you can make a permanent 'greeter' who lives in the tutorial.

Since Premiums players are coming in this week, and Free players (Freems? Freeps?) are not too far off in the future, this could be a really cool idea.

Question: I heard that free players will not be able to Trade with other players, so giving inf might not be possible ? If that's the case, do we know if we can at least drop Enhancements (ex. level 5 Training: Damage) that they could either sell or use ?

That is indeed a very interesting question. In the old days i did quite a lot of events for the new players, from basic stuff as 'find me at the metro' or 'get me a lvl5 accuracy enhancement', to specific tutorials on AT's and specific sets (as i have tons of characters) and give them a reward for such.

I wanted to bring back my 'my question your reward' back, i ask a random question about CoX, correct and they get money, or they can 'double it' by asking for a harder question (wich goes up to gamemechanics and combatsystems).

The help channel is getting flood already by massive discussions about basicly anything (people that lost their IO usage, WoW is better etc etc), i believe the 'helper' and 'i need help' titles are not really working ingame.
