Did they even say before now what they were doing, other than "something about rikti" ? Otherwise, what exactly did they promise that they wouldn't be delivering if it's an invasion?

Indeed. As tired as I am with the Twitter teases, imminent != immediate.
Case in point: imminent is more like "in the near future" as opposed to "now".

Whatever it is, I think it might start tomorrow - it makes more sense to kick off on a Friday than a Thrusday.

The only thing that will upset me about this is if it is some kind of super special one-time event, even it it is only the Mothership appearing above Atlas Park, and I miss it because it was kept such a secret, and I was at work. Sort of like if they'd sprung the whole 5th Anniversary event on us without prior warning.
Also, isn't there usually a 2xXP weekend in late January? I know it usually falls on the weekend I'm out of town at an engineering convention, and that is next weekend. Seems highly unlikely there'd be an overlap of 2xXP and Rikti Invasion, although maybe the bonus 2xXP weekend in... October(?) eliminated the need for one in January.

Hmm all that hype for A Rikti invasion week seems kind of...well...wasted...
Though I wouldn't put it past them to use secretive clues and twitter hints to get us talking so it takes our mind off the lack of info on GR people are crying for.
Forum has something to talk about, speculation goes wild for a couple of weeks, announce rikti invasion week, everyone goes 'meh' and it's served its purpose

The Rikti do indeed have spies and scouts among us. A notable villain arc made that very very very very very clear.

I think a previous person summed it up nicely with regards the use of imminent.
"I do not think that word means what you think it means..."
