How much money have you invested in this game?

Let's see... just for the game...

City of Heroes - can't remember the initial cost, figure $49.95
GvE - $19.95
Magic pack - $10
Cyborg pack - $10
Science pack - $10
Ninja pack - $10
Wedding pack - $10
Valkyrie pack - $10
Extra slots - $20 (I think)
Extra story slot - $6
Membership from July 2007 through now - $405

Then there's...
HeroCon 2008 - ~$1100
HeroCon 2009 - ~$1100

Not to mention the stuff for the videos...
Sony Vegas Movie Studio - $135
Sony Sound Forge Studio - $85
Sony Acid Music Studio - $85
FRAPS - $37
(Not including my hosting and website - I had those BEFORE I started playing)

Never mind the hours of writing and videomaking that this game has 'cost' me by stoking my creativity... the HUNDREDS of hours spent filming in-game...

Yeah, I've become a bit attached to the game. But it's been worth it.

I've bought two copies of the game, one pre-order and one CoV collector's box. I've paid for my main account since pre-release and my 2nd account since a little after CoV came out. (It was my way to get more slots before there were other ways, and once I had 2 accounts I was addicted to the convenience.) While my 2nd account has always been paid in 3-month blocks, for some reason, I didn't notice until recently that my main account, which I of course had longest, was on monthly payments.

CoH Pre-order = $20?
CoV CE = $60?
GvE edition boxed set = $20?
GvE pack = $10 (for 2nd account)
Three booster packs x2 accounts = $60
66 months at around $15 = $990
42 months at around $12.50 = $525
3 rename tokens = $30

So $1715, probably ± $100 in various omissions or errors.

I can't really include the cost of my gaming rig in there. I would have upgraded my stuff no matter what, and if I wasn't playing CoH, I would probably been playing something else, possibly with higher-end requirements. (Before I came here, I was an FPS nut.)

If I start thinking about how much I paid for this game so far, I'll start thinking about how much I have yet to pay for all the other cool new stuff (+ subscriptions), and I'll (probably) realize that I can't really afford it once I move out of my parents' house (don't worry, I'll be 20 on Dec. 2nd, so I'm not too old to still live with my parents). I'd rather just enjoy the game now and not worry about what'll happen when I move out.

Still...

Almost 4 years (4 year-long subscriptions), all the booster packs except the 30-day jetpack, the initial purchase of the game, several character slot purchases, and the odd character transfer purchase add up to a whole heck of a lot, I'm sure.

It was SO worth it.

I can't really calculate. In addition to all the boxes and packs I've bought across two accounts, I used to pay for the game entirely via CoH/CoV time cards, and I got them for wildly varying prices, but always less than $15/month, or else I wouldn't have bought them, obviously :P

I used to have this huge pile of used time cards next to my desk.

Hmm...probably too much and not a lot at the same time

About $750 in subs directly to NCSoft, and about 4-5k in hardware to support this habit.

This is the only game I play so 90% of my hardware justification is to play this game. I'm budgeting another 2k for GR upgrades once it is out.

Seeing as I was under a lot of financial pressure when I started the game, it was positively cheap entertainment for the amount of time I've spent playing, so the extra hardware costs aren't that expensive now that I haven't any inclination to do other activities.

Ditto what the others say, plus I've replaced my computer (whole system) 3 times just for this game.

The cost in terms of added stress for myself and family, loss of sleep, and high blood pressure have yet to be tallied.
Now don't cheat, if you got a corresponding salary increase you may just be able to account for the moving costs.

Now me...

4 years and 11 months of monthly payments (never gone for a package) all boosters but the wedding pack, full release retail price for the original game and City of Villains... on top of that I have paid for 2 websites and domain names for some 3 years only so I can host some game related databases and charts. One of Lets just round that up at 25 bucks a month each site (it's slighlty more.)

... that's about 2 grands over almost 5 years, at an average of $32 per month.

It used to be Castle, but Castle wisely expedited BaB's redname forum account three minutes after he was hired.

In terms of money spent, my guess is about $1300, plus or minus. Relative to the value of the time I've invested in the game, for me the game is practically free to play.

lessee.

Retail box at release, CoV at release, GvE item pack, magic, cyborg, ninja & science packs and four-odd years of subscription, mostly paid month-to-month although last year I wised up and went with the 12 month deal.

I replaced my system last year during a Dell Christmas fire sale for 300 bucks, and I'll probably splurge on a new video card this x-mas for about the same, aside from that I've always run on hand-me-down hardware from my more cutting edge gaming friends.

Hmmm,

2 accounts, one at 60 months (husband's) and one at 57 months (created from a buddy code, I think).

GvsE Edition X 2
CoV Collector's Edition X 2
Wedding Pack X 1
Tech Pack X 1
Ninja Pack X 1
Rename Tokens X 8-10(?)
Server transfers X 8-10(?)

Others have done the math above, so I'm not gonna try to calculate it for myself. I figure a couple of thousand dollars - for many, many hours of entertainment.

I noticed that others added in costs of attending HeroCon - those costs were well above my budget, especially this last year while job hunting. Really wish I could have afforded them, though, still crossing my fingers that NCSoft will spring for the expense of doing a similar event in the MidWest.

I could also count the cost of the upgraded video on two laptops. We were going to purchase the laptops anyway, but the default video was sorely lacking.

Too lazy to add it up, but one account at 5.5 years, another at about 3.5 years, various boosters and server transfers...I'm thinking in the neighborhood of $1750 or so. I don't include my laptop, as I'd have a pretty high end machine anyway (for music creation/performance, although if I didn't play games, I'd have saved a little on video hardware, probably).

Considering all the entertainment, the online friendships, and overall good times this game has provided (and continues to provide), I think it's money well spent.

City of Heroes - [definitely] $49.95
GvE - $19.95
Magic pack - $10
Cyborg pack - $10
Science pack - $10
Ninja pack - $10
Wedding pack - $10
Valkyrie pack - $10
Plus the Mac pack, $19.95 I believe.
Two character transfers, $20.
CoV $49.95 (wasn't it, brand new? I may be off here.)

62 months of subscription, but a few of those came free, and I've gotten discounts for having a 6-month-auto-renew as well. I'm gonna say 59 months, at $14.95.

I bought a gig of memory ($90), a new video card ($350, top of the line at the time), and subsequently a heftier power supply ($60). Yeah, they've been useful for other things, but I bought them with this game in mind.

Grand total, unless I hit the wrong button somewhere, $1601.85. Over 5+ years. Really a nice price for entertainment, especially considering the money I would have spent on console games or even a whole new console, or DVDs.

quite a bit. i have been here 5 and a half years, started paying quarterly, then went yearly around the three year anniversery, and recently have taken advantage of the holiday deal and the loyalty deal for 14 months each. got cov at launch, got the coh box a bit after launch(blame final fantasy XI for the reluctance) have all the boosters and bought 5 character slots for liberty. also got the valk, wedding, and g vs e packs.

so it probably is quite a pretty penny. Cant blame my comp upgrades on coh thus far, they were for oblivion, but my current upgrade purchases are going to be specced out according to going rogue. so there will be that, but im holding of till close to release, as graphics cards tend to go down in price, and i'm really not playing anything else that graphics intensive right now.

Prolly somewhere in the ball park of 2k and over.

And while that seems like a lot, consider, a 15 dollar sub brakes down to 50 cent a day. Most arcade games are more then that for one play session, that lasts what, 5 mins or so? I play an hour to two hours durning weeknights and over 3 on most weekends. I've spent as long as 12 hours online at one time. For 50 cent that day.

It's accually some rather cheap entertainement when you thinkabout it.

Ummm, lets see, *counts on fingers*
2 months sub. 40 dollars (I bought sub. cards at bestbuy before I had paypal)

2 booster packs 20 dollars.

So...60 bucks.

(For comparison my monthly cable bill is $132 and change. Cable TV and internet over the same period of 5 years has been about $8000 including some PPV events)

<edit>
I dont view this expenditure as an 'investment' though, its a payment for an entertainment service.
Don`t want to spoil anyone`s forum fun, but when you look at these numbers you`d think they would put some free costume pieces in the game to satisfy a wider variety of tastes.
I only spent a lil` bit over 100
Anyway ... why would someone pay 132$ for their cable ?

People will pay six thousand dollars for eight feet of speaker cable.

I wonder that myself sometimes

breaks down roughly as
$75 for digital preferred teir
$25-30 for internet (I forget)
$5 for a modem rental (yeah I'm that stupid - I'll buy one when I move next)
$10 IIRC for Sports Package so I can watch the Permiership games on FSC (Fox Soccer Chanel)

the rest is fees and taxes

To get the channel line up I want on DirectTV requires the 'Premier' Tier ($84 a month right now, $110 after offer expires and that includes Starz, Showtime etc which I don't want).

Im seriously thinking about adding Setanta to that for another $10-15/month, mianly for their rugby coverage.
