How much money have you invested in this game?

Look back, add up all the money you spent per month and all the boosters you bought.

I have spent over $900 on my account since August of 2005, and I recently got my girlfriend into the game, bought her the boosters as well, and spent at least another hundred.

I am 21 now, and have been playing the game since I was 16. It is kind of shocking when I realize I have been playing this game from when I was in high school and from when I got my first car. Over the course of the game I moved out, met and now live with my girlfriend, and work for a very nice company.

One weeks worth of pay is more than worth 5 years of regular updates for a wonderful source of entertainment and socialization.

Over the course of 15 months I have paid for 15 months to play the game (I'm including December because my subscription is due every 2nd of the month); I've purchased the Magic booster; purchased the jetpack booster on two occasions; purchased two name changes; and purchased two respecs. So I've sunk around $280 into this game so far. Will be $290 because I intend on getting the Martial Arts booster.

Edit: And it was worth every penny. I love this game, and even though I've slowed down as far as playing it, I will never cancel my subscription as long as I can help it. This game has a place in my heart, and I don't say that about many games.

For the whole household:

60 month accounts x2 (At ~11.95/month) 717 each, plus $30 purchase $50 for colelctors, $50 for COV collectors
Boosters GVE, Wedding, 'Mac Pac' Super boosters 1 through 4 (8 at $15)

Total each account estimate $967

30 month accounts x2 (Buddy code so no upfront - 7 boosters each is missing the MA pack until my next payday)

$463.50 or so

Total household $2861

(For comparison my monthly cable bill is $132 and change. Cable TV and internet over the same period of 5 years has been about $8000 including some PPV events)

<edit>
I dont view this expenditure as an 'investment' though, its a payment for an entertainment service.

Let's try that again (some of these numbers are rough estimates)

Account 1 720 in subscription
Account 2 660 in subscription

Two Pre-Orders 15 each =30
Twelve Boosters 10 each =120
Two GVE editions =60
Three Server Transfers
Four Five packs of Costume slots =80

Video Card on old machine =150
Sound Card on old machine =100
RAM in old machine =80

so it's approximately 2,000 over four years.

Pretty much sums up my feelings on this as well. And the amount that I used to spend on coffee would dwarf either of Cat's expenditure figures.

60 month account and 30 month account is over $1300 for monthly fees. With boosters and game purchase, probably $1500 for 5 years. As a raw number that is kinda depressing, however, when you really think about it over 5 years and compare.

1 $50 new Xbox game every two months for 5 years = $1500.
Heck I have probably spent $1500 on my 'girl' in the last 6 months and we are only 'best friends'. (I know im a sucker for a cute face.)

Cost to play: $1500
Finally getting my first TANK (and sixth toon overall) to 50: Priceless.

Hmmm. Let's see...

We're talking about maintaining two gaming accounts over a 5 year period (Hubby arrived midway through the game's history, then bowed out in 2008), 6 booster packs between two accounts, 3 character transfers, and full retail price of 2 COH boxes plus 2 more COV boxes. Add in 2 more retail boxes fo Going Rogue (yes, hubby's promised to come back and try it with me), but I won't include hardware or software upgrades because that's not all 100% investment in COH - which ultimately brings my grand total to....

Erm... just under $3k.

Not bad really for 5 years enjoyment of an MMO game. If we could've done anything differently, we might have opted out of "month to month" payments and gone with prepaid, pro-rated annual subscription rates instead. Risky at the time, but 5 years on, the savings would've been well worth it. If Going Rogue keeps us both involved for more than 2 months, we'll probably buy a year's subscription outright.

Over 5 years playing, all the boosters, character slots, pre-order on Coh and CoV so around $1500 or so for over 5 years of fun has been the best money I've spent.

Never rented the 30 day jetpack, no character transfers, renames, or respecs bought. All of the different retail boxes, collector's or otherwise. 36 character slots on the only server I play on, all of the superbooster packs as well as the Wedding Pack, GvE, and Mac Special Edition stuff.

Still. Need. More. Character. Slots. Please. Let me buy moar character slots before Going Rogue comes out, pretty pretty please!

1000 bucks or so. Another 2K on rig parts.

3000/5/365.25 = buck fifty a day

That's pretty cheap entertainment.

Be well, people of CoH.

Account 1 - 45 months (approx $650)
-- Account 1 prepaid - "buy one year, get 2 months free" (130?)
Account 2 - 6 months ($90) (lapsed)
Boyfriend's - 25 months ($375) (I pay for his account)

CoH Retail - 2 ($40)
CoV Retail - 2 ($40)
CoH Collector's - 2 ($20)
GvE - 2 ($40)
Game Card - 2 ($40)
Mac Edition - 2 ($40)
AE Edition - 2 ($40)

Wedding Pack - 2 ($20)
Boosters 1-4 - 2 ($80)

Character Slots - 2 5-packs ($40)
Rename - 2 ($20)
Server Switch - 4 ($40)
================
TOTAL: $1705? approximately
(around $38/mo, or a buck .25 a day... honestly, it's worth it at twice the cost!)

A lot less than I was expecting, actually. Huh, that was a surprise. I am terrible at 'guesstimation math', so I was expecting ~$300 more than I have actually spent.

Although if I added in computer upgrade/rebuild/upgrade/rebuild/soon to be another upgrade, it's a couple thousand more

Let's see... Last Veteran Reward says 63, so that's 63x$15 = $945. I also have, let me think... CoH, CoV, the GvE pack, the Wedding pack, the Cyborg pack, the Valkyrie pack, the Magic pack, the Science pack, Natural pack, at $10 each, that's... 7x$10 and I'm fairly confident I paid $50 for each retail game at the time, so that's an extra, call it $170, for a total of around $1115. Yeah, that is a lot.

I could check out my Account page, but I have a few things I didn't pay for there, so they don't count. Oh! Oh! And $10 for a character move, as well as 6 extra slots on each server, 6 of which were free, so that's 6, bought in pairs of $10 each, for another $30, plus the $10 move fee, plus the original cost goes up to $1155. Not too shabby.

Easily $15-20k. Between purchasing two copies of CoH, one copy of CoV, subscription fees paid for both of accounts up until I was hired, moving costs, security deposits, increase in cost of living, cost of gas and commuting, and cost of airline tickets to visit family for holidays, etc.

The cost in terms of added stress for myself and family, loss of sleep, and high blood pressure have yet to be tallied.

Let's see, when I add up all my Cryptic Bucks purchases and Lifetime subscriptions.. ahh yea.

Me and my wife have two accounts with everything purchasable on them plus a couple extra copies of the game I bought for friends years ago, but it doesn't seem like that much when it's rounded up.

That's interactive entertainment.

Get that blood pressure under control, it'll fry ya.

With Jack gone and Positron wisely laconic, you seem to be taking the brunt of the unreasonable hatred and and unnamed developer misquotes, so that is a high price indeed. For what it's worth, I commend you for taking it as well as you are and still posting despite our unpleasable fanbase

Let's see -
Main account: Feb 2005 to now, 57 months. $855
Free months (four editions - coh, cov, mac, gve) - $-60 - so $795 subscription.
COH DVD edition, wal mart, $20
COV CE on release, I *believe* $80.
GvE edition - $20
Mac pack - $20
All boosters, $50
Extra slots, $20 (I believe.)
Video cards, $200. (est.)

Account 2, Sep 2006-current, 3 yr 2 mo - $570 (Started with GvE edition.)
Free months (GVE, Mac, COH CE, COV CE) - $-60
Subscription - $510.
All boosters - $50
COH DVD (Big lots) $10
COV CE - $35

While not for my own use, another $40 for friends to get the various CEs from big lots.

So... roughly $1830.

I'd have to guess but I'd say mine was close to $3000, I bought one of my SG members CoV for a gift.

I had 3 accounts running for a while.

When I started playing this game, I was recently divorced, and was rasing my daughter alone. She was 3 at the time. Now I have an 8 year old, almost 9. Remarried, have a son that is 2, and an older daughter 13. All but the 2 year old wants their own account, and even he wants to play the "good guy" game. So far Lego Batman is all he needs.

So, DEVS. um can we get a lifetime offer. I'd so pay for that.

Oh I forgot to add 2 different laptops and 1 new computer, probably in the 5 to 6k range then. Curse you for making me need to buy a new graphics card for the upcoming expansion >(

The price of CoH/V for me pretty much comes down to a little over a dollar a day. The amount of entertainment I get from that much money is just plain ridiculous.

I would go for that too. But I also think that it's not good for the long term health of the game.

As for the original question...
Between 3 accounts, boosters, extra slots, etc., Herocon for two as well as making Comic-Con (thank god I get into Comic-Con as an exhibitor) and PAX both years, I don't think I want to know...

Not as much as some people.

Buddy code - Free
CoV - Err.... $30? $40?
Cyborg Pack - $10
Mac Edition - $20
Magic Pack - Free (Someone bought it for me)
AE Edition - Free (Someone gave it to me)

35months of monthly subscription (3 of which were included free with various game additions) 32 x $15 = $480, of which I probably paid for less than half (my parents paid for most of it) so say, 150bucks.

$210-$220 since I created my account in May 2005.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, and $10 for a server transfer.

@Oathbound & @Oathbound Too

'Spent', not 'invested'. Let's see:

$0 - first account created with 'buddy code' - no retail package
$702 - subscription, taking into account reduced rate for buying in larger blocks
$20 - CoV
$10 - Good vs Evil pack
$20 - Mac edition
$20 - AE edition
$30 - 3 booster packs (got one free with AE Edition, did not buy Wedding pack)
$802 (average $15/month)

$20 - Good vs Evil edition to create second account
$336 - subscription, taking into account reduced rate for buying in blocks
$20 - Mac edition
$20 - AE edition
$30 - 3 booster packs, same as main account
$406 (average $17/month)

$1208 total.
While I did get a free month with each of those retail editions, this is balanced by the fact that I have already paid for future time.

So both accounts cost about $32 per month, on average. That's a bit less than my DSL bill. Quite a bit less than my cable bill. A third of what I spend on gas. Sounds like a bargain to me.

I'm almost afraid to do this math ...

Let's see, the cost of the game: $50
plus COV: $50
60 months of subscription: $900
a second account I kept active for a few months: $100
all Booster packs: $70

So that's $1175 spent directly on the game.

During my 5 years of playing, I have also purchased two new computers driven almost entirely by a desire to improve the game's performance: approximately $1700
plus two new graphics cards: $700

Total expense: approximately $3600

EDIT: Forgot about Transfers, Renames and Extra Slots: approximately another $200.

Total: $3800, give or take
