Yay... we're number 7

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Just glad to be on the list, frankly. Maybe GR will help improve our ranking in the future; maybe not. Either way, I'm still playing

I agree with most of that list, though a few I would shuffle around (I would put SWG lower than EverQuest and Ultima Online, and I would put City up a spot or two maybe, but as an avid player I am biased and have a more intimate knowledge of the impact on MMOs by my favorite game, whereas the gaming community at large mostly goes "City of Heroes? You mean that old game that brought capes to the MMO world...?").

Pretty good list.

I would pull Darkfall and Sims Online, and replace with DAOC for certain. Hmm - not sure who my #10 would be. Probably FFXI.

Worth mentioning: This isn't a list of "best" MMOs, but a ranking of MMOs that left a significant impact on the MMO industry. The #2 spot is given to Star Wars Galaxies because the ****** everything up with the NGE. The #5 spot is given to Dungeons and Dragons Online because it successfully switched from subscription to free-to-play + item mall. The #6 spot is given to Darkfall because it rose from the dead, not because of any redeeming quality of the game itself.

Yes, QFT.

Lucky 7!

Interesting to see SWG at #2. I think it could also be an example of how a massively popular IP is not at all a guarantee of success, but then again, in the MMO world that's a given. Regular licensed games only have to be bought once by parents and kids who don't know any better, but a MMO has to keep people coming back.

And I notice that we're the only super-hero MMO mentioned on the list, so anyone interested in that genre is going to see us and no one else.

They say that any publicity is good publicity, but actual good publicity has to rank somewhere a bit higher up on that scale.

My favorite part is how they slapped their logo on an in-game screenshot that already has the CoH logo on it.

they mention the other guys in the write up, but really it does kind of make coh the more prominent one, all the better i say.

Darkfall? Never heard of it. Was it one of those myriad MMOs that boasted they'd be the EQ killer back in the day but were nothing but vaporware?

SW:G, #2? Lol. The most genius thing was that SOE managed to tap a market of fanboys who PAID A FEE for the privilege of being a Beta tester, by virtue of being Star Wars (Sure does remind me of another MMO with "Star" in the title). EQ and UO had far more reaching impact on the MMO genre. Oh, and to let Raph Koster sit back writing treatises on "fun" but not let him near your devs or you'll get un-fun.

Again, this list is about biggest impact on the industry. Say the letters N, G, E to someone in the game industry, and they'll know exactly what you're talking about, and how bad it was.

My question is; When was that picture taken and why?

At 1st glance I assumed it was a publicity shot from the early days of the game. Then I noticed all the wings, including Valkyrie.
Was this a massive SG gathering or something?

If I recall correctly, it was from the test server for the 5th anniversary.

That sounds about right. It was definitely on the test server and I recall them asking for people to show up for a huge group picture. Unfortunately, I was unable to be there.

Yep, 5th Anniversary publicity shoot, earlier this year. System notices popped up on the live servers about an hour beforehand saying "Get to da test servah!". By far the most people I've ever seen in one place (I never did old Hami raids).
