Yahoo Widgets, CoX, and You (well, *me*, really, but I digress...)

Is there a way to get a Yahoo widget to be in front of the game? I have a clock that I want to use so I can see the time, but even after setting it to stay on top of other windows, it won't stay on top of the game. Any suggestions, ideas, etc.? Are there CoX specific widgets for the game? Thanks. =)

Run CoX in windowed mode?

Windowed mode would be my only guess too. I can't get my music player to stay on top either, but I like the game full screen so I just.. live with it.

Yeah, Windowed Mode doesn't help. Oh well, looks like I'm S.O.L., I suppose. =\

That's what I use.

There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"

You could also set up a bind on a key to shows you the current time on your computer's clock:
/bind KEY localtime

If you really must see it all the time, you could even just bind it to your Forward key (or something else that you use often):
/bind W "localtime$$+forward"

Then it'll show up in your chat every time you move forward, and you'll always know what time it is! haha

The clock is really the only reason I run in windowed mode. If that didn't work and I couldn't put a clock up on my screen, I suppose I'd buy an actual clock and keep it next to the computer or wear a watch. Sometimes low tech solutions are still the best.

IIRC, Herostats has a clock on it. It definitely overlays on top of CoX, and it's what I use to keep track of bubble timers on an 8 man team.

Same, I use HeroStats for all my timing needs. Went through and cut up a bunch of sound files from 1602 A.D. to use for my individual timers in it.

But the fact that HeroStats stays on top shows that there's a way to do it... I just don't know what that is...

The program(/widget) needs to be coded to allow for the Always On Top state. Whoever makes the program(/widget) needs to specifically code it in.

Widgets are generally a container system and then third parties write scripts/whathaveyou to make the actual widgets; in which case, the widget system would probably be the one that needs to include support for Always On Top, rather than the widget writer. For example, all Vista widgets have an Always On Top checkbox in the context menu.

I bought a little digital kitchen timer at Target for $10. It shows the current time, but also has a really simple countdown feature that I use when I am playing a buffing class.

I set the timer for 3m 50s and start the countdown when I start buffing. When the alarm goes off, I have 10 seconds before buffs start fading. It auto resets to 3:50 so I just have to press the button twice -- once to silence the alarm and once to restart.

When I am not buffing, it is a regular clock (although I have it set to Western Australia time since I have other clocks around and I have friends in Perth).

HeroStats is my all time favourite add on in CoH. I was so sad when I noticed it doesn't work well with Vista. I'm very sad about this. I have heard it might work with windowed mode, but I just can't bare to play in windowed mode, I have no idea why, I guess it makes me feel like I'm playing a browser game.

It sucks, I know. I've tried dozens of different things to make the HeroStats in-game window's always-on-top option work properly with Vista full-screen mode. It's never worked consistently. I actually have Vista now (I ran XP up until a few months ago) and I myself have to run in Windowed mode to make the HeroStats in-game window work. I find that once I size the window to take up all but a few pixels around the edge of the screen, I barely even notice the difference. I'd love to find a way to fix the always-on-top issue with Vista, but I have yet to find anyone that can explain why it's happening, much less how to correct it.

I can get the coh screen in windowed mode to nest on the desktop seamlessly. I like to have the taskbar accessible without needing to alt tab. It takes a bit of tweaking the client but heres a screenie of COH nested on the desktop.

My screen is 1280x1024. I use TweakCOH to maintain the offsets (X = -4, Y = -28) instead of editing the registry if it gets out of line.

I use a macro for each new char to set up the colors and the format of the ui:
screen 1280 966$$wdwloadfile standard-res.txt$$window_color 28 56 84 230

Speaking of HeroStats, I've been using it with Windows 7, and it's worked wonderfully until yesterday. When I tried to run it yesterday (trying out I16 on my Kin), HeroStats alone took up half of each of my two CPUs, as well nearly twice the RAM of Firefox. With HS running, CoH was chugging along at about 4-5fps (or more like 0.5fps if I was somewhere busy, like the market or the tailor yesterday). Shutting HS down bounced me straight up to 30fps.

I have a dual monitor setup at home. One will house the game full screen, the other will house anything else (Mids, Herostats, Your favorite Internet Browser, AIM, Yahoo, whatever). But a second monitor can be expensive.

I've just wiped up a little clock application just for you! Okay, I really only made it to test out some code to have Vista make the widget's background transparent+Gaussian blur, in the style of the window decorations. But hey, it shows the time and is always on top You can (left) click and drag to move it, and right clicking brings up a context menu with an option to close (alt+f4 also works).

Look closely and you'll see the semi-transparent nature.

I'll upload it somewhere later... If I can find a place to upload it to (speaking of that, anyone know anywhere good?)

Nice!

Never met an Altruist/Program Blast 'fender before! meheh

Am I the only one that uses the icons to time buffs? Never had any problems with it either.

Needing a separate program to help me time my powers just seems.. excessive.

I'd go with Programmer/Oppertunist, myself

Here's the download. No fancy installer or anything, just unzip and run. I'm contemplating yanking HeroStat's scanner and writing an application that takes advantage of that... partly because the chat windows crap out when you scale the UI.

So was that written just for Vista users or can I use it as well on my XP-running machine?
