I don't no if it Possible or not but it would make the game fun and Adventure's,It would boost thing a little bit,I don't no what do you guys Think.

People ask for this occasionally. I believe the conclusion was that it would be too stressful for the game and/or servers?

Bull****. It wouldn't be any laggier than the sky changing for a Rikti or Zombie raid. I love the resistance to change on the S&I forums by all the know it alls. It's really funny.. yeah.. funny..

I'm not claiming to know anything, to the best of my recollection that's the party line from the devs (I could be wrong though). You, on the other hand, have made a definitive statement about what would or would not have an adverse effect on server stability, based entirely on nothing. So who's the know-it-all here?

I've been asking for weather effects since Day One of this game. It makes no DAMN sense for Paragon City RHODES ISLAND to have the weather of Miami Florida.

From someone who is definitely NOT a programmer, it seems to me that most of the effects the OP asks for would be more stress than the different sky colors for Rikti or Zombies. During those invasions, only the sky changes, there are no additional "things" moving about on screen.

To have a really nice looking storm, you would want objects to be moved by the winds and to be able to see "rain" falling from the skies. That's a lot of additional animations, isn't it?

Same with snow, lots of small objects moving around on the screen - snow that doesn't "fall" is just ground of a different color. I do recall that immediately after Winterlord in 2004-05, there was snow on the ground and the lakes and creeks were frozen over. They could do that again, I would think without making snow "fall", but most times when people ask for weather effects, they want to see the weather happening, not just see the results laying on the ground.

Again, I know nothing about coding, but making lots of small objects move on the screen would seem likely to add stress to older systems.

LOL!

There is a big difference between the added particle physics of rain and snow, as opposed to just changing the color of the sky.

This.

Remember that the game can only render a certain number of things on screen for each person, and beyond that number things *just do not appear*.

Rikti raids, any time there are more than a handful of people around? Notice well that if you back up, you see different things popping in and out of your view.

Add rain? Snow? No thanks. I wouldn't mind there being more basic effects like the Halloween / Zombie attacks and the Rikti raids, as well as fog like in DA, but honestly... it's not necessary, and it's been said by devs that it's just not something they're looking at doing. It *could* be done. It's just... too consuming on resources for this engine.

Why would adding weather make the servers struggle?

I would have thought weather effects would all be client side as they would have zero impact on anything apart from look. Its not like you'd earn more XP when it was raining or something. With no reason for it to be abused making it a client side change would be logical. With the plus side to that if your machine is of the older sort you can switch the whole thing off.

Edit: Or even use weather picked from some sort of online weather station so you could have your local weather in game.

From someone who was born and raised in RI, there should be NO weather changes in CoH. If there were, it would be raining 94% of the time, stopping in five-minute intervals just to give you hope before crushing it. Then it wouldn't snow all winter, followed by a month-long blizzard in March, and it then one day in mid-August it would go from -15 to 90 degrees in the span of a day.

RI weather is psychotic.

You're right that weather would be client-side. But it could potentially have impact on the animations, causing slower display speeds. How much depends on the implementation. My guess is that rain or snow that simply falls down would be relatively benign, but that's just a guess.

People may not realize it, but the game already has something like this. There are birds wheeling about in the air in Nerva. Newspapers fly around in Paragon City. Also, if you stand under a tree leaves fall. They collect on the ground. If you hover you will make the leaves move around. Similarly, if you use certain powers near trash bins stuff will come out and fly around.

This started happening a couple of years ago, I think about the time they added persistent objects for Propel. Another guess: the same code was adapted to provide persistent falling leaves that provided the fun Propel objects.

The real question is whether adding weather is more important than adding a power set. It's a matter of feature priorities. Weather's probably on the list, but hasn't made it to the top yet.

I have a feealing it would put too much stress on the servers and be very laggy, which is sad because it would add alot to the game. It just seems like it should always be raining in most of the CoV cities. The fog effect in Dark Astoria is really neat, I wish the viilains had access to that zone. The only time we get to see ice or snow is the baby new year event once a year, which is a shame. We really need a snowy zone all year round....and having actual snow falling would make it ten times cooler.

Wonder why this MMO was made differently. Why is it that other MMOs can have weather effects, but this one would become even more lagtastic?

I'd love to see a really intense lightning storm whip up over the Rogue Isles.

No need for rain or over-the-top particle effects. Just the dark, tumultuous clouds of the Rikti invasions done in dark grey with the occasional flash of ambient light and appropriate sfx. Maybe some howling winds for good measure. ^_^

Yeah, given how hazy the Rogue Isles generally are, I don't think it'd take much more than sound effects and a different sky texture to create a believable storm effect.

If you want weather effects, think outside the box on how they could be implemented without lagging everyone to hell.

One of the offsite interviews with War Witch had her reply about weather - that while it'd be a "wow, cool" effect at first, after a while it would just get irritating - especially if done right (weather affecting powers, movement, and perception.)

At least as I recall. That on top of other comments about performance.

Edit: TBH, even the day/night cycle now is not much more than sky color and lighting - it doesn't affect perception at all (on either side) where, done "right," it should (to varying degrees, with dynamic moon phases affecting lighting.) About the closest we have is Dark Astoria.

So I guess it's true that you can justify ANYTHING with role-playing, huh?

I always figured the War Walls pumping pure energy into the air has an effect on the weather on the city. Both keeping it warm by generating heat and acting as a buffer keeping storms out.

I thought I'd like weather in CoH, but this post has made me think twice.

we already have weather effects 2 to be exact

1 red skies --it rains zombies
2 weird green like skies --rains rikti

what else do you want? We could add "men" next like in the song?

Zombies crawl out of the ground. Rikti teleport in. Ergo, neither of them are falling in an adequete manner to even consider an invasion to be raining Zombies or Rikti. The bombs, maybe, but that's it. >.>
