My bird is dead

All,

The Zube family has, for several years, consisted of myself, my wonderful wife, my amazing daughter (almost 12 now) and a blue and gold macaw who was just a baby (just a year younger than my daughter).

Tonight my ****-ing neighbour's dog killed our bird.

My daughter cried herself to sleep in my bed, in my wife's arms. The bird lays on her back wrapped in her favorite blanket (that she loved to chew on and play with). And here I am drinking **** loads of alcohol in a vain attempt to pass out. And at the moment, I can't think of anything better to do than to share the misery. Since I have exactly zero RL friends to dump on, I guess all of you get to hear about it.

dammit all to hell.

Sounds like the dog needs to take a dirtnap.

Since we don't know the exact circumstances here, I'm not willing to lay blame on the dog.... more like the owner.

Anyone who has a dog needs to realize that they are carnivores, and as such still retain their natural prey drive (some breeds more so than others). Hence, leash laws and fencing laws.

Dog owners have the responsibility of maintaining control of their animals at all times, whether that is through leash or through training.

Though I am not a bird person myself, I understand that macaws are very personable and usually long lived (50-80 yrs).

So very sorry for your loss, Zube.

Wow that sucks, considering a Macaw's life expectancy is 30 to 50 years its a great pet to get for kids too so this type of trauma bs just doesn't have to happen.

Sorry for your loss.

As a guy who has had a pet for all his life (at least one, sometimes 2 or 3 at a time), I can whole-heartedly empathize with you Zub. I had an African Grey for almost 2 years. Although he was not actually mine, I was bird-sitting while my friend was in Iraq (the first Iraq war). His name was Jimminy, and he was a great bird. He loved for me to leave the TV on for him, especially sit-coms with laugh tracks. He loved the sound of laughter from the TV.
He was my best-friend for just under 2 years.
I would come home and there he'd be ready to come out of his cage and fly to his perch. And every time he's go to his perch, he'd say "Thanks Buddy".

*sigh*
I miss him. Although he didn't die, my friend came back from the war, and then moved to Texas. Jimminy is still alive, and living happily in Amarillo (the last time I talked to his owner). But, it was like he died when he was gone.
The first week was the hardest. I'd come home, and the house would be quiet. No TV for him to watch, no little "caw" from across the house to acknowledge he heard the door, no "Thanks, Buddy" It was so emotionally cold in the house. I can imagine what it's like with a whole family. I really do send my deepest sympathies to you and your family.

You will get through this, and eventually smile when you think of him, and not frown to think of him gone. He will be a positive in your family history. Remember that.

My condolences, Zub, on the loss of your non-human family member.

May your neighbour, and his little dog too, be bombarded with pigeon droppings.

Well, unfortunately, making the owner take a dirtnap is a felony.

Deepest condolences to you and your family Zub.

I was almost 12 when I had my first experience of saying goodbye to a beloved pet.

My Grandfather came to visit us shortly after.

your dog loved you too.

Silent but messy revenge. Exlax. Srsly. It wont kill the dog, but its gonna make a massive mess. Just insert half of one in a "treat" that discretely makes it over the fence to the dog. Repeat every other day (to avoid dehydration) as long as you wish.

Well, I hate to break it to ya Mr. Vick, but killing dogs carries prison penalties as well.
The dog was just being a dog; an animal following its natural prey instincts. Taking revenge on the dog would be pointless.
There are laws... The owner can and should be held responsible.

I will comment on this matter no further, as it detracts from the consolation sentiments and support that Zube & his family need at the moment.

Again, Zube, my heart goes to you and your family for the loss of your feathered family member. In time the heartache will ease, in time.
(hugs)

All my sympathy to you and yours Zubs. Losing a pet, especially so unexpectedly, is just devastating. My first pet that was all mine, that I didn't share with brothers and sisters or anybody else, was my mastiff. I had him before I got married, before my kids came along. I knew that his lifespan was limited, and it still just wrecked me when he died. It took almost two years before I could even think about getting another dog, until my wife and kids convinced me that we all needed one. All my condolences on your loss, and have a drink (or 5) on me.

I remember when a dachshund I used to own killed a canure that I had perched on a patio chair. It was a tragedy, but I didn't lash out at the dog. How could it have known what lines weren't meant to be crossed? How could it know this wasn't just a handout or a toy, instead of another pet I held dear?

You simply can't. The circumstance you've described is terrible, I agree, but harming the dog or the owner would just pass around the same bitterness, gaining you nothing except a bitter and ongoing feud.

I want to thank everyone profusely for the kind words. I didn’t expect anything like this. I was only venting last night, and really, really drunk when I posted. You all make this situation suck just a tiny, little bit less than it did before. Which is actually saying a hell of a lot.

I guess I should provide more specifics on it.

I asked my daughter to pull weeds in the back yard. And I had Swetha with me at the time. The bird obviously wanted to be with her, so I told my daughter to keep her while she pulled weeds. After awhile I told my daughter to go to the west side of the house to work. This is where the wall between my property and the neighbor is. At one point my daughter was stooped over with the bird on her back. She stood up and Swetha was either spooked or lost her balance, flapped her wings, and over the wall she went. (Although her wings were clipped, she still managed to get just enough lift.)

The dog was there, and that was pretty much the end of it.

So she feels guilty and that she’s to blame. And I feel guilty because I set the whole scene up. Rationally I know that it’s not the dog’s fault or the neighbor’s fault, but emotionally, well... that’s a different story. (And it doesn’t help that this guy has been nothing but a pain in the *** since he moved in, for reasons too numerous to mention.) So I tell my daughter that she isn’t to blame. And I *try* to tell myself that same thing, but I don’t believe me.
