Unnecessary Censorship?

Oh jeez, I completely forgot they censor god, too.

See, for most of the time, I don't care about the censors thanks to the ability to turn off the profanity filter. It seemed like the perfect solution to me. Those that worry about these things get a bunch of random characters, and I can make use of my extensive vocabulary and listen to others.

But then I tried to give my hand at the MA when it was fresh, tried to write an arc, only to have an error message pop up because I was using crude or foul language or something. It turns out my contact said "Oh my god!", which naturally violates the second Commandent AND THEREFORE SHALT NOT BE.

Yep, imagine how confusing it was for a friend to be talking about her godchildren, and the other person was asking why she was swearing so much!

In another forum, I ran afoul of their filter when I mentioned changing chlorinated pools to saltwater pools. I had to edit by phrase and word to figure out which one was the trigger. Finally to separate salt-water to get it to work right. It annoyed me because "salt water" is an adjective + noun, whereas "saltwater" is an adjective in it's own right. *sigh*

I remember playing Phantasy Star Online. People would chat in the lobby for hours. Favorite topics included:

And of course, censoring any word that contained a swear made things confusing.

I don't think I ever had a conversation in that game that didn't get censored.

Wait, are we allowed to say **** here? I mean, my grandfather goes by the name ****, it's not uncommon.

They should instead have the autocensor replace the cusswords with less offensive equivalents.

That way we can talk about pee pee, poo poo and Jerk van Gay.

As I've said elsewhere, censoring the words Nazi and even Hitler made writing my WW2 arcs rather difficult (and silly sounding).

Given you can turn the filter OFF in game, it makes rather a mockery of anything they could potentially do, ratings wise.

The ENFORCED filter on AE makes me nothing short of outright blooming furious, though.

Seriously, anyone playing with their filter still on, when you are over...what, fourteen? Is rather...silly. Yes. Silly.
I mean, for pity sake, you hear more offensive language on the STREETS. Every. Freaking. Day!
Come on, reality stop check please!

And yes, someone revamp the Forum, Game and AE filters, please oh lord.

Yeah... people's issues with words is just such an odd thing... and the problems it causes for the people trying to moderate and the people trying to not be bogged down by such silliness... When there is such better silliness to be consumed with!!

That example of latin and the reaction the foolish censoring actually creates is a wonderful example.

I wish people could just let things go as is.
Let people use the full range of words... and then we can all see where everyone truly stands.
