Unnecessary Censorship?
I'm reminded of the WoW forums, which go to the extreme of censoring words within longer words.
For example, grape (small round fruit) becomes g!$%#. And you also can't talk (successfully) about the several magic cloaks in the game whose names begin with Drape. /facepalm |

The censors really are messed up, not just in-forum, but in-game, too.
A buddy of mine once ran into a Knife of Artemis that said something like "I'll slit his throat" or whatever, and naturally that nice four-letter word was censored because apparently it can refer to female genitalia or something. Best part is that I only found about this AFTER I heard about that word being censored.
The censor even strikes the game's own dialogue. If that's not a sign of going overboard, I don't know what is.

Um, slit is not censored. I use it on my stalker for said phrase. Something else that ends in -lit is.

Either way, I don't see how one *lits a throat, anyway, or why an in-game enemy, outside of AE if that's relevant, would say that.
Maybe the Knives are kinky like that. I dunno.
Are you sure you didn't turn the in-game filter off? I know I did, hence why I never would've found that out myself.

EDIT: You are correct. I have my filter turned off.

"s" and "c" are in relatively close proximity to each other... maybe it was a typo?

Again, a spectral fourteen year old, "Gnur hurh hurh! You said 'slit!' "
Wow. I just pointed out something I found odd, and now all this absurdity is being brought to light. This really has gotten out of hand.
I'm not entirely sure how we can go about getting the attention of someone important, but this really needs to be brought to the Dev's attention. The game is censoring itself needlessly.
I mean, I can think of a dozen words that can refer to questionable portions of the human anatomy, which are totally harmless in other context and suitable for a child to hear and speak. They should not be censored, or else common conversation becomes a series of bleeps...

Beat me to it, so I'll share this one:
Sometimes overcensorship can really make a message much worse than just letting the minor offense through.. |
If you see "She's a real thunder $%#@", do you think "thunder cracker" (intended as a positive assessment of her strength of personality), or do you think of one of the most offensive things you could call a woman?
What does a child or parent think when someone says to them, "Want to join us? We're ripping through $@%# at level 41" instead of "We're ripping through 45s at level 41"?
Does "I was admiring her $#%$ structure" sound more or less offensive than "I was admiring her facial structure"?
When facing the 5th Column, is "I hate these #%#@ jerks" more or less teen rated than "I hate these Nazi jerks"?
I remember being told that the profanity filter was going to be re-evaluated back in Issue 14. I'd like to know if that's still on the plate, if it's been abandoned, or if it's already happened.

*sigh* When it came up as censored, it was sort of like having an obnoxious fourteen year old in the room interjecting "heh heh, durrr... you said ***! hurr!" None of us had that on our mind till the censor interjected. Someday, someone will program a contextual censoring engine. Till then, we get goofy garbage like this.
Edit: Sweet. The forums don't like Latin either! |
That was a big wtf moment for me.
Oh, and that Count video was hilarious. I was rolling when he said "And when I'm alone, I like to BLEEP myself."
The filter used to/still does filter "god", which is often a typo of "good" - so telling someone they were good, or were doing a good job, or had come up with a good idea could seem insulting if you didn't add the extra "o"

Yeah, I remember the whole god thing. I found that to be extremely annoying. For one, it alienates pretty much every religion. I was raised Christian, and to us God is just called God, so you're censoring a word that is a proper noun to us. Secondly, it makes basing your character off of religion/mythology difficult. How can I say my character, for example, is a servant of Loki the god of michief? Do I substitue "diety"? Thirdly, there was my main point, in that censoring "god" nerfs the one of the ultimate outcries of a triumphant villain. The villain recieves almighty power, stands before the hero and proclaims dramatically...
"I have become a <BLEEEEEEEP>!!"
Doesn't really cut it.

Not sure if it still does this.
On a side note, am I the only one who enjoys the fact that the tags for this thread are *** and ****?
That blue thing running around saying "Cookies are sometimes food" is Praetorian Cookie Monster!
Shoot on sight, please.
yet god isn't censored on the forums...
...bwah?!
Yeah..erm...devs...know your busy with Issue 16 but someone needs to have a look at the filter (admittedly I turn my own to avoid the stupidity that it brings).
Maybe they should just have a warning displayed at the main page of the forums. Something like:
WARNING: Contains Language.
Then they could relax the filter to the point of only censoring overtly offensive words. After all, i could tell people in no uncertain terms to go do things far more graphic than any two censored words on the list without using a single word that is even slightly risque by itself.
Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...

Wow's filter is actually much less aggressive than the one here.
