I thought the traditional birthday message was turning up, drunk, at one 'o' clock in the morning, hugging the birthday boy or girl and saying:
"I... I love you.. I bloody do... Will you be my mother?"
before passing out in the gutter.

Hence the reason it was changed to the one I mentioned to stave off future embarrassments! 
Although admittedly I gave the same message to a work friend recently but I ended it with the statement "Oh who am I kidding!" because this work friend is Irish.
(Yeah, yeah I know....HOLY SWEEPING GENRALIZATION BATMAN!)
