Have you been keeping an eye on Ranpu Tenrai and Honoo Kurai versions of Eleven Z?

Or is this just some rather freaky coincidence that you have closely described two of my toons?

I'd like access to the auras and capes from level 1. Cause yes, it's kind of annoying having to level to 20/30 to get that look you want.

Granted i pretty much never use auras cause i don't like how they often obscure the costume. But i do have a couple of costume designs where the cape is an integral part of it (aka it looks like [censored] without the cape).

That could work tho i would still prefer them simply being available regardless of Vet status

Villains would nick a cape as soon as they could, with or without Recluse's say so. Hells, most of them hate his guts anyway and have/will beat the snot out of him a lot.
Heroes honour Hero 1 in various ways, such as fighting the Rikti now anyway, and "That Other Thing" ( )
So, yes, Capes at lvl 1. Otherwise those who buy the Valkyrie pack of have Vet awards, if you stick to that bit of canon so tight, are technically breaking the law, or at least Statesmans law.

Come ON. Just....DAFT...-sigh and facepalm- I like canon, but that bits just poor, im sorry. Outdated, needs an UPDATE!

I can understand why you would like to be able to customize your character with anything available to the game. Sure it would be neat if i can have my fairy pal now instead of having to wait a few more months. Sure, it would be grand if I can be granite boy from level 1 instead of having to wait until i got that nifty tier 9 power. Sure I would be like to be able to fly as well at level 1 since i got wings. Sure my caped boy blunder should have his cape at level 1 and electric hazard should have bolts around her body at all times. Sure I want my Heat and Veat without first leveling to 50.

Ain't going to happen.

This is a game. Games have goals, things you must work for. They even gave us gamelore of why things work like this. As a non rpg'er this is something i can appreciate. As an rpg'er this is a thing i can appreciate as well. After all, i am part of the coh universe and my hero or villain has to adhere to the rules of this universe.

But what if I am not part of the coh universe? Though luck there. This is a game/environment set in the coh universe, in that case you will have to make up your own reasoning why your character has no cape yet. But the world will not change because you chose not to be a part of it. Sorry if i sound harsh here but this is how i feel about this.

But, the goal is being superseded by a paid for expansion pack and, as I have said before, gamelore is not a good enough excuse for not doing something. It's too easy to change.

As a goal it is something that might keep a new player 'on the game' (so to speak) until they reach level 20. That is probably well within the free game time that they will get anyway, if they just stick to one character. After that, it just becomes a drudge to get to a certain level to see your hero/villain finally realised. If you are more interested in RP or the look of your character than playing then it is something that may seam like a really unattainable goal.

I just can't see a logical reason not to do this. The counter arguments don't outweigh the original position.

Well I presented my arguments, you presented yours. You disagree with my view, I disagree with your view. I don't think I can convince you or you can convince me. So let's agree to disagree here.

Only thing that bothers me is the folly of paid for goodies that allows you to do things that should not be and go against the normal rules. If it was up to me, those goodies would not be available to level 1 toons.

In 30 levels. It took me over 2 years to get to 50, leveling isn't something I do quickly. Playing with friends and roleplaying and taking my time is what I do with the game. It's not quite as bad as WoW where my character couldn't even wear a hat until his mid twenties unless I got extremely lucky with a rare drop, but still...

All I want is to be able to create a character that I like the visuals of and it fits the concept from the get go. That's all. Access to capes and auras are part of this.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well I'm guessing you don't find it too difficult to enjoy the game, and are happy levelling slowly.

Yeps you can get a cape and an aura at lvl 1 now. But that's really not that different to getting Bone Wings (for example) on a character 14 months before you get your vet reward. I don't see too much difference to be honest.

Actually I'm finding it increasingly difficult to with boring and samish story arcs and mission maps, flaws in the system and setting and general fatigue with roleplaying. Coming up with concepts that are then difficult or unworkable to realise then doesn't help matters, having to play for 20 levels disatisfied with the look of my character so I can get the right cape for him doesn't help.

Basically I'm in a sore, grouchy mood and fed up with the game.

Did you know that you could remove Paragon City and the Rogue Isles all together pretty much and just have the map screen with clickable contacts and mission buttons, and it wouldn't really change the gaming experience that much? It's the City of Heroes, but nothing really happens in the City areas. Just same old missions in the same old mission maps. Different text and dialogue doesn't really change defeat all in a Warehouse and defeat all in a warehouse.

Capes at level 1? No.

The way I see it is that you're not strong enough to earn the priveledge of wearing a cape 'till level 20, and if you're a villain, you're not strong enough to nick it of a hero of that level either.

I tend to make my characters with fairly rough shod "home made" costumes at level 1. They're new, the experiment has just finished, the training has just completed, they're only starting to discover their mutation, or their gadgets work, but not terribly well yet. It's only at level 20 do I give them a "proper" costume, and therefore a cape if their character requires one, because it's only then do I deem them a "proper" hero.

That aside, I think the game needs milestones for people to aim for to keep them interested. Travel powers at 14. Capes at 20, SOs at 22, auras at 30, big power at 32 etc etc. If you take those away, it tends to make things feel all the more grindy.

Given too that lvl 20 these days can be reached in just a few hours of committed team play, I don't really see it as a big necessity.

Then explain a lvl 1 character with shoulder capes or valkiry capes?

Agreed, mile stones make for a nice overseeable short term goal to strive for and not be daunted by the far off way in the future destination (generalizing, not just CoX).

How ever, the mile stones of capes at 20 and the reason behind it is now more so then with shouldercapes negated by them putting in capes that can be had from lvl 1. Also, capes are the staple of hero designs, why limit them? - because you have to give up your cape to show respect to Hero 1 and Omega Team, and earn it again by showing more respect.... why not let us show that respect at lvl 1? There's nothing in the game that makes me think "Yes, this is a good reason why it's level restricted."

Aura's are even more daft to restrict, from an RP point of view... unless you strictly adhere to the "you're a new hero and only just started to learn the ropes" point of view. But if you adhere to that, you have to take out the sidekick system: how can a new hero do that much damage?

And as said, the pacemakamajig is a rather poor story telling way to allow aura's in magical heroes.. and how would natural ones get an aura? They have no power to finetune into an aura.

No, basically you have the game with its rules and setup which you have to follow. They tried to give explinations that would make sense in the game world and that works... until you throw some creativity at the game.

Birdy has summed up quite well what a "computer RPG" is: the game gives you a roll, and you play it.
CoX has the strength that it doesn't tell you much about the roll you play, it gives the player a lot of scope to fill in the blanks. But, in doing so, those people that take that freedom to create great and creative concepts for the roles we get to play... sometimes find that the boundries are still too narrow, and without good reasons. The reasons for capes wasn't that bad, just poor, but now by adding Valkyri capes from lvl 1... that reason just evaporated.

Let's take it into the real world with real world logics.
Most people get their drivers licence when they're between 18 and 20, right? I got mine at 27, and that was my own choice. I'm now allowed to drive in all sorts of cars.
Right, now imagine a new born baby being given the licence to drive a new, single designed car that looks slightly different but acts just like any other car.. does that make sense?

Same could be said for lvl 50, just make it a few days, let's make cool visual effects that add absolutely nothing to the how the game is played for lvl 50's onl.. oh, wait... that would exclude the majority of players, the devs have said... I wonder why that is...

Ever played a Peacekeeper? Or a Fortunata?

They already did just made stuff for those who reached level 50's only.

What they now should do is make stuff for level 50 characters to do. Personally that would make me most happy. I would like to be able to do epic things with my epic level heroes and villains. I want a reason to try to get those rare IO's.

But again, that's a very poor conceptual argument because it is based on the current gamelore which can so easily be changed. That is especially true now that the shoulder cape is a vet reward and it is just compounded by the introduction of the Valkyri capes. As I said before, arguments based on gamelore are no reason to dismiss an idea.

With something like capes, which are such a stalwart of superhero design, it is actually a detriment to the creativity of the player base to not have these tools available right from the start. A milestone is a great thing in a game, I agree with you there. The problem I have is that capes are not used by every character. What milestone is available to those concepts?

Of course there are milestones for those toons, but capes don't factor in to it. With that in mind, what is the actual use of keeping the cape as a 'reward'? Level 20 is, in my opinion, a big enough pull in its self. That, coupled with getting a pretty decent power (YMMV), an extra costume slot and a badge is what the real bonus of level 20 is. So where does the cape factor in to it?

As far as I can see, when capes were brought in (in issue 2) it seamed to be the biggest part of the issue, even though the Hollows and the Shadow Shards were added as well. It was the capes that people seamed really excited about. So, it was decided to make people earn that extra bit of shininess and, back then, it was a bit of shininess.

Now though, with players who have been around for years as opposed to a few months, the pull of the cape as a reward has lost its edge. Those who want them need them for conceptual reasons. Those who don't are not effected by this at all. The case for it being a milestone isn't a particularly strong one anymore, unless you are a new player and there are plenty of new players who I have met who seamed despondent that capes were only available at 20, not invigorated to reach that level.

Well said. This is the only problem in this game i see. Yeah you can make your own heroes in a jar which is waiting on the product line to get filled with the same old beans.

Before my two leaves the feeling you described were unbearable, i was hating everything about the game and all that silly contacts giving me same hunt X missions to lead me same old boring Warehouse/Office/Cave... map. Same style, same spawn points only different mobs.

Honestly i don't think having capes or auras on level 1 will help that either, nor having all your powers available from the start.

This is why nowadays i prefer specific missions, even they are same old missions at least i can enjoy them still (Faultline with AVs, Croatoa with red caps or Midnighters Arc with Rikti/Lost/CoT) and past my many hours on TFs.

Maybe it is not my place to say that but Zortel i think you need a break from this game... after some time you maybe will find that refreshness i found my second comeback.

Highest Regards,

The reason that villains don't wear capes until they hit 20 is simple. Lord Recluse said so. Are you going to argue to the man before you hit a comfortable level and got some allies? I doubt it.

Why are villains allowed to wear shoulder capes? Because the rules say nothing about shoulder capes and for some reason LR is obviously not disapproving of this little rebellion. Why can you wear Valkyrie style capes? Because someone is paying big bribes to allow that particular item to be worn. There is a reason you have to pay so much for that one.

See? Some simple reasonable explanations why this is allowed on the rogue islands based on the game lore and all.
