Undead Slaying Axe vs. Sands of Mu

it does depend on concept for me, but explaining SoM is more difficult than getting an axe from somewhere. I use it against Cot ghosts (prevelant throughout the game) Vazhilok, banished pantheon and Tsoo Ancestor spirits, and against Croatoa ghosts, after that I have so many attack power I rarely use either anyway. It feels I can use the axe more often, and I hate it when SoM doesn't hit that's three seconds wasted. But In e few years (not months) I will be able to choose both.

Sands of Mu for chars that carry no weapons and Axe for chars with weapons.

Sands of Mu every single time. It does more damage than the axe (most of the time, and for me fighting ghosts is a rarity), and it's a cone, people. Unless you are unable to line up cones properly, this makes it far superior in my eyes.

That'll be me, then! No-one appears to have told the bad guys NOT to move into a better position to thump me AFER I have carefully run into a position where I can clobber them all in one mighty Mu/Maul

Actually the cone thing seems to work just once in a blue moon with me - I could put 16 Sky raiders in a sack and unleash Mu and still hit only one of them (if I'm lucky). Because Dark Maul can be enhanced, it's better - but not always. Mu is great in the early levels, but woe betide anyone who has to rely on it landing to save their butt.

I wish the animation was a bit different to Dark Maul, too. Just so my DM people don't look so manic ALL the time

That said - apart from my "Queen of the Undead" MM (who uses the Axe as a purely disciplinary tool, of course) - I seem to always choose Sands of Mu, because when it does land it does whopping great damage, and cuts down the time needed to get Isolator in Breakout by a year or two...

Sands of Mu for me - Just so that I can shout "Thousand Hand Slap" in a mock oriental voice when I use it.

Ah, the memories!

I tend to go with whatever fits the concept really. Robotank has the axe, but because it fits his concept. Shadowcall has Mu, but he's a Dark Stalker, so another dark power seemed to fit.

A good (or possibly bad) example is one of my least used toons - Cloudwalker. Cloud is a dark/inv Scrapper, and currently (at least the last time I looked) has 3 versions of what is pretty much the same power: Shadow Maul, Sands of Mu (Vet) and Sands of Mu (Temp from mission). When I do play him, I can cycle between all 3 of the variants, generally without having to use anything else. Possibly not the most creative of tactics, but it's entertaining.

So, I'd take either really, dependant on concept. Sure, the Axe's bonus might not be applicable against all foes, but it still does some damage (always good as a finishing move, if nothing else).

Cheers, @RoboTank

Robotank Inv Tank
Cloudwalker MA Scrapper
Shadowcall Dark Stalker

Solaise Fire Blaster

As a side note - the Axe does more damage than Power Burst on my Defender, although it is only 2-slotted with -1 damage SOs

I find the Sands of Mu more useful at lower level, but I rarely use it past L15ish on any character except my MM - its damage tails off once your attacks get slotted and it's annoying when you miss.

On my characters that do lethal damage I always tend to take the Axe instead - less useful at lower levels, sure, but once you start running into ghosts that heavily resist lethal damage then the Axe makes them a little easier.

I rarely veer from this, but with my characters that were already L50 when the vet rewards were added I just took what went with their concept (Mu for the MM, as he was /dark - and Axe for my fire/fire brute because he's a demon and I just wanted an Axe for him, for fun).

I used to prefer Sands of Mu but it misses too often and you're rooted to the spot for what feels like a lifetime while flailing relentlessly at thin air.

Having been here for too long, I get the choice of the Black Wand or Nemesis Staff as well. Since I don't need the extra attack because I already get one with the wand or staff, I've started taking the Slaying Axe instead. It really helps with those immensely annoying CoT ghosts.

Oh my - now I want both of them! Guess I'll have to keep playing for a good while longer then - it's a tough job, but...

Another thing occurred to me as well - how exactly do you SAY 'Sands of Mu?' Is it 'Mu' as in cat noise (mew) or Mu as in cow noise (moo)?

The greek letter Mu is pronounced 'mew' like a cat, according to every single one of my physics lecturers.

The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.*

The only character I've taken the axe on is my DM Scrapper. Two versions of the same power seemed a waste.

Well, speaking as a physics lecturer, that is how I would pronounce it.

...But not being Greek, I'm not sure it's right.

They probably pronounce it "moo" in the US though.

I really should do something about this signature.

Hey, I just go with the KLF on this. After all, they are justified and ancient...

edited to add:

The actual 'lost continent' of Mu has nothing to do with Greek, (it's a much later concept than Atlantis, coming about at around the same time as the ideas of Lemuria in the 19th Century) and I've always heard it pronounced as 'moo'
