Illu Trollers Decieve.. good, bad or indifferent ?
I've just rolled a new controller last nite, an Illu/TA troller. I found decieve very usefull. Becuase when there's no one around it works like a hold. I made that char for soloing. So in my current levels (lvl 4) it is essential for my soloing carreer but i don't know what the future will bring.
In teams sometimes i found decive good sometimes not. But mostly it deserves to take. I like that power actually.
At higher levels its more of a situational power than something that has to go in every attack chain, but it can certainly be fun to use, on things like Skyraider force field generators or the psycic clockwork king.
Solo it's the best way of dealing with some foes, get them to beat each other up until they are weak enough to deal with.
Xp penalty smenalty. You get a bigger penalty for debt or killing mobs slower.
I really should do something about this signature.
I think it's excellent, especially for when the controller has to solo - deceive one, hold the second, defeat the third. Since they've shortened the animation of the power my opinion of it has only improved.

I would have to agree here.
An Illusionist without Decieve would be missing out on a very useful power.
I used Decieve from level one all the way up to Fifty and found it to be a brilliant power, with many uses.

Generally, I love it. The XP penalty is small, and it speeds you up. The people who complain about it tend to be the people who haven't thought about it enough to realise that because they're getting through missions more quickly, they're getting better XP over time, which is really what matters, not how much you get in a mission.
I find it especially good for confusing one or two particular mobs in a fight that you know will give you or the team trouble. Sappers, some Circle mages, Avalanche Shamans, Tsoo Sorcerors... they're all good targets. If you have time before the team heads in, you might well be able to confuse one before they get a shot off, and then you can always confuse another during the fight.
You do get the odd situation, though, where someone insists on using it before fights and slowing down the entire team. Everyone's ready, you're all standing by the mob and about to go in, and they decide they want to confuse half the mob one by one, while you all stand there waiting. I've only seen it happen at quite low levels, thankfully. Now, I know there are times when rushing in is death early on, and it can be wise to take the time to soften the enemies up if you're having trouble, but if a team is already getting through a mission just fine, there's no need for it. And if someone is both causing an XP penalty and slowing down the team, then they probably are making XP worse.

As a general question, and bearing in mind the slight xp penalty, what is your opinion of using Decieve at lower levels? Both from a trollers perspective and from the perspective of being on a team with a troller that uses it.

It is excellent, one of the most fun powers in game.
Like all the others said, take it !! - Quite a fun power. Especially when you are buffed e.t.c as a result of a suitably deceived mob.

Yup, yup... When I play my mind dominator or my illusion controller my policy is: hold the hard-hitter, confuse the mezzer/pet summoner/(de-)buffer.
Confusion powers are great. When played right they add xp over time, survivability and fun.
If it has eyes, you can blind it, if it has blood, you can make it bleed, if it has a mouth, you can make it scream.
Fairly well sums up my interpretation of its use too. I was in a team yesterday where a guy who "knew what he was talking about because he has 4 Illusion 'trollers" told me that I was wasting my time using decieve and that I should be more agressive, and contributing to the team.
Essentially I was using it on bosses or stragglers which strayed to the support players (and of course me.. far better to be concentrating on buffing / healing the rest of the team than having to mess about with an enemy that had decided I was going to get it's full attention). Quick decieve sends them back into the mob and everyone's happy.
It's good to know therefore, that I wasn't wasting time and I was in fact, contributing to the team! Controllers and defenders are a bit of a new thing for me because all my other toons are essentially the up close and personal kind (2 tanks, a PB and a scrapper)

i respec'd out of it so i could get tp but will be picking it up again at level 49 hopefully can be a very useful power at times and can lead to some funny moments.
As others have said, it's a brilliant power. Useful when you are lowwie to have that sorcie healing you, or that raider's force field buffing you... but also useful when you are high and want those nasty DE eminators buffing you... And of course, brilliant to deceive an AV and have him killing all the minions and lts surrounding him, so you can attack focusing on him alone (it was the only way I could solo infernal and his portal when AVs where still AVs when you were alone, it was hillarious seeing him waste the portal all by himself)
Unless they've changed things recently deceiving a DE eminator only stops it buffing the DE, it doesn't make it buff you.

It did back in i4, before they were temporarily removed tho then
Got a mob who you've put an AoE debuff on, but has been knocked away from the rest of the group of mobs?
Deceive him and watch him run back to his friends.
@Under Control
It's an awesome power, integral to the effectiveness of the set.
I pretty much treat the Deceive power as a immobolise power without containment or damage. What's not to love about it? Aggro-free, enemy affected temporarily fights on your side/buffs you, and when everything is done, he stands and wait for you to arrest him.
While you're in large mobs with teams, just fight as normal, and fire off Deceive on different enemies whenever it's ready. They stop attacking the team and if your team is having problems, eventually half of the mob will be fighting each other, which lessens team death.

One of the most important aspects of deceive is that it doesnt cause aggro, and thus doesnt break your stealth (super invis).
I have deceive on my illu/kin and (confuse) on my mind/emp and love it on both. You've pretty much already been given the general pro-deceive consensus (at least by experienced players) and some rather cool tricks to use. I won't repeat it all, except to say a neat trick I often use on my illu/kin with no travel power (especially when soloing) is to confuse a minion before hitting him with siphon speed without aggro from the group.
Good power...usually better powers to take so no room for it.

Everyone has pretty much highlighted the good points and I will not cover the same ground but I would like to echo the post about the worst possible use of the power.
Do not ask the team to hang around while you try to deceive, one by one, half the spawn, there really are few things in game more annoying.
My Main is a Illusion/SR Controller, and I think I picked at level 2/level 4. But I found out it was like Force Mind Trick they used in Star Wars--and I have found it useful just for fun, too. Awesome power, and like the others, EXCELLENT POWER! TOP NOTCH PLAYNC!
I have an Ill/emp and normally just decieve thos enemies that I think will cause most probs I try to hit the first as the team go in heal while I wait for it to recharge then hit the next one I was in a team a while ago and was asked not to use Decieve as it meant lower xp so I backed off and let the boss spank the guy who asked me not to use it after that he was happy for me to use it nuff said.

Was using my g/f's ill/emp during a synapse TF, was five of us and 2 of them where PB's decieve was awfully useful against those voids we all know the epics scream and cry about
Decieve is great PvE and PvP get the baddies to weaken each other you go finish them off.
Or PvP I spam it then start debuffing so when they do get a hit out of my fear it usually makes them hit phantom army or my phantasm.
TAKE THIS POWER!
