What is enjoyable about the Rikti Invasion?

The true joy is being part of producing graphics that can promote severe epileptic seizures or so it seems sometimes.

I don't think it is as fun as fighting Giant Monsters myself, but I do participate in Rikti Invasions and Zombie Apocalypses when they happen to be part of the massive gang fighting these things and helping to "save the world" and all that.

I wish it was structured a bit differently, but it is what it is.
Massive lag and a light show to produce some xp and badges.

He's now level 15 from the crazy XP that rolls from invasions

The XP in these things never seems to be all that great to me. My level 14 character got 1.5 to 2 bars from one today (well, technically yestreday now). And in that time could've done a mission solo for more XP.

It's relatively good exp until about level 20 or so simply due to the fact that you've got a great deal of bosses and lieutenants mixed in where you'd only be fighting mostly minions at that level. After 20, it drops off sharply compared to doing missions.

Mass chaos, debtless deaths (even if debt is not a big deal, it bugs some folks. *shrug*) Good size groups of players in a giant melee. And a psi resist (or was it defense...) accolade.

And it can just be fun.

Its more enjoyable if you take your team out away from the zerg of heroes. Also getting together with said zerg and taking out the dropships looks as if it would be fun.

Let's ignore for a moment the fact that our civilians are invincible, our buildings are indestructible, and the Rikti will eventually get bored and leave whether we fight them or not. Aliens are invading your city. You have superpowers. You fight them. Duh.

I'm kind of glad it's only for the weekend this time though. When they were week-long, by Monday the novelty wears off and they become an annoyance, as they always invade the zone I'm trying to do other stuff in.

I believe that the dropships give no reward if defeated. Also, they do not slow down ever it seems, while you as a player will if you attack. Very difficult to defeat with no reward.

It's getting together with 30-50 best friends that you just met, pulling on your collective *BLEEP!* kickers and cramming them into places that give the Rikti collective consciousness screaming hissy-fits. THEN putting the hurt on every alien slimeball within eyeshot who wants to step up and shake your hand with their face.

I'm one that often prefers fun over reward. Which is another reason why I quit every AE team that was farming Hami mitos ( thanks for nerfing that btw) I like the fun and thrill of fighting not just trying to get the best rewards with very little effort. While it sucks that they don't give a reward it would still be fun.

Rewards for the dropships should however be added someday maybe even another badge for doing so. I mean they are constantly dropping nuclear bombs on the city why aren't we destroying them anyway? lol

They were fun the first 2 times, now I just move to WW or log the toon.

But they can be fun at first.

It's a lagfest. I don't quite understand it but the kids apparently love it.

Just something a little different to do rather than running from instance to instance (which with the MA now is about 5 feet). Larger number of players than can ever get into one mission with usually more enemies you get in a mission just fighting until ya drop. Yes, every 5 minutes of every day they can get old quick...but once in a while its a lot of fun. Ended up on a few good PUGs from invasions too...teamed up for the invasion and we all just ended up running missions afterwards for a while.

Lag CAN be an issue for slower machines, but like someone suggested earlier, zoom out..it does seem to help with the lag. You also have the option that if you don't like em, go inside a building or another zone for about 15 minutes, go grab a drink, have a cig, use the can, stretch your legs, etc.

It doesn't seem to be the machine. Framerates remain pretty smooth. It seems more like the overwhelming bulk of information trying to be passed between so many sources at once causes the game to choke. Among other things, Rikti appear and stand still for awhile then fall over dead without attacking (people were comparing it to a Mito farm at as it did this for several waves).

I dont get lag at all ever.

I do them for fun.

I got caught up in a Rikti attack on Kings Row during my trial account two weeks. That was what prompted me to upgrade to a full account, because it was awesome.

I'd been fighting purse snatchers and muggers for a week, and then the sky turned green, the sirens went off, and I stood there staring at drop ships until (it seemed like only seconds later) suddenly there's alien invaders attacking me! I remember aiming a kick at a Headman Gunman and seeing him teleport out of my reach and start firing at me from a nearby rooftop and being absolutely amazed at how dynamic the fight was, and utterly exhilerated as I climbed up the fire escape after the bad guy.

I still love the invasions, and every time I see an alert that they're hitting a low level zone I hope there's a new player there having the same reaction that I did in Kings Row that day.

It's more for bragging rights, I'd say. I think close to a dozen 8 man teams were taking down drop ships in a coordinated effort over on Virtue (red side) last night. Awesome and epic!

The Elusive Mind accolade is both psi defense and resist, usable for 60 seconds with a base 25 minute recharge.

If the invasions were something that ONLY happened on one weekend, once every few months, I wouldn't mind it as much. However, between the zombie invasion and the Rikti one triggered from the LGTF, you often see a number of invasions daily anyways. When all you want is to run missions, and you can't do your "Defeat 20 whatevers in X zone" until it's gone, the charm really wears off. Compound that with having to dodge the dropships if you're in the zone when it starts, and I've just lost all interest in them.

Another great thing about the invasions, depending on your archetype, is MASSIVE inroads into your healing badges. I think the last time they did an invasion weekend, all the healers of my SG on Justice fanned out across Paragon City and formed teams to fight the Rikti. We had the Auto Doc plans in NO time.

Then there's the getting out of debt badges, taking damage badges, mez badges (thanks to Mentalists, Mesmerists and Priests)... a good way to get mentoring badges too, now that I think of it, even if it's in the dribs and drabs of one invasion at a time.

And they're just COOL.

As for chasing down dropships, sure they don't give rewards, but BOY is it satisfying to take down one of those suckers.

What I would LOVE to see is a random chance during the invasion weekend for the MOTHERSHIP to show up, and have 100 heroes in the zone all beating the living CRAP out of the thing.

You can find some sweet vids on YouTube of massive groups of flyers teaming up to take down the drop-ships. Looks like fun but takes a high level of coordination and very precise timing.

Had something new happen last night: Was leading an 8-man mish team, Exited the mish right as a Rikti Invasion was starting.

Rather than head to the central spot we just held our ground at the mish door and took on all comers.

The zoning-in-after-zoning-in-after-zoning-in enemies took on a whole new relevence when every teleport beam posed a serious threat to our survival.

I think just being away from the mob, feeling like our fates were in our own hands - ONLY - (and the fun of seeing it all thru the eyes of one of the team members who had never been in a Rikti Invasion before) made it the most fun I've ever had during Rikti Invasion.

If you're bored with it by now - try getting away from the mob on your own 8-person team and see the whole thing in a brand new light.

Very fun, very rewarding.
