What is enjoyable about the Rikti Invasion?
I've crashed twice (one in Cap au Diable, Freedom, which isn't exactly a surprise) but that's out of over a dozen invasions. Today when I saw the Atlas Park alert I just took a moment to tone down my graphics settings a little.
I'm glad I did. My scrapper finally got the third of the badges in the ensuing fight around Ms. Liberty - my first ever accolade power
Reason I love the Rikti invasions is that in pairs or in massive groups, it feels like you are super powered, you taking out these hordes of Rikti teleporting in, wave after wave just swarming in on you.
Still remember my first Rikti Invasion with the release of Issue 10, was late at night on the EU Union server, just me and a friend were standing around fighting the Rikti.
The Rikti stop teleporting in for what seemed like a couple of minutes...
Me: "well I think that's fin*Rikti begin teleporting in again*ished"
Friend: ech...movies haven't taught you anything?
The waves stop again.
Me: Ok that's definitely got to be it...
*More Rikti Teleport in*
Friend: I told you...stop tempting fate!
Waves stop a third time.
Friend: Don't say it...don't say anything, I want to go to bed, we've been fighting these <expletive> for what seems like an hour...just keep quiet..
I follow his advice and keep quiet.
*Rikti begin teleporting in again*
Me: Oh come on...I didn't say anything that time, how is this fair!
Once they finally stopped again, just before everything returned to normal there was a long silence between both me and my friend in team chat followed by;
Friend: I think they just hated us that damn much...

It's a lagfest. I don't quite understand it but the kids apparently love it.

Kids?
I'm well into my thirties (year, not levels) with over a year of play time and I still like them.
[ QUOTE ]
I dont get lag at all ever.
[/ QUOTE ]
I wish I could say this. Usually, with a full zone and everyone fighting, I get a bit of lag on low-pop servers.
Tried participating in one on Freedom just to see what it was like.
I could move around just fine. But I couldn't get more than one power off every couple minutes it was lagged so bad.
[ QUOTE ]
I do them for fun.
[/ QUOTE ]
So do I.
Rikti dropships do give rewards (I was in one of those teams) but they are not much. Like lieutenant inf + an insp.
A game is not supposed to be some kind of... place where people enjoy themselves!
What really bothers me about RIs thematically is you have these ships coming to attack a city full of Heroes and nobody but nobody (except in very rare circumstances when someone gets dozens of people together; and this almost never happens) flies up to challenge the ships and take them out.
Mechanics-wise this is because the ships are too powerful. Make them Elite Boss level instead of Giant Monster or whatever they are right now. I want to see people fly up and start taking those ships out every time the Rikti invade. That's what should happen in a city of Heroes.
P.S. Sometimes all I want to do is level up at Ms Liberty or some other practical thing and with an invasion on, forget it. I have to just quit the game and go do something else instead. That's frustrating.

Yeah because it is so darn hard to get to Galaxy or Kings, Or Steel, or Skyway. . . and that 5-10 minuets of Rikti Raid is just a killer.

A REASON TO ACTUALLY BE OUTSIDE

The intensity of a fight.
The sudden need to team.
The teams with complete strangers suddenly saying, "hey it's in Galaxy, let's head there now!" and going with it.
In other words, it's a way to shake up the game enough and put some people in teams together who'd never have even thought of it before. it feels heroic to me, gathering around the "big spots" in zones, with 30-50 other heroes (or villains) to defend our city from the Rikti invading forces.
I love it.
[/ QUOTE ]
Totally this!!
Saying things like "Where's the rally point?" in broadcast and getting a dozen answers, and watching as herds of players rush to that area. Taking a team zone-to-zone to follow the Rikti. The actual fight is pretty boring, IMO, until one spots a Heavy. Seeing them spawn is still exciting to me.

lol! Right, the battles during the invasions are real intense...
[/ QUOTE ]
That's really what kills the invasions for me right there. The battles are static, boring and mindless. I'm not really that big a fan of "tactics" and so forth, but when all it comes down to is finding a target you can attack then fingering your number keys like you're playing the guitar... I lose interest. Even worse, as a Traps Mastermind, all I ever did was let the Henchmen run wild and occasionally lay down a trap as it recharges. Bo-ring!
And even if it were more involved than that, it doesn't look impressive. It looks like a gigantic mosh pit waist-deep in pea soup. I don't enjoy standing around and hitting buttons against the first thing that isn't an illegal target and having to assume I'm accomplishing something. I enjoy battles where anything I do (beyond "activate powers") actually matters and where I fire powers because I feel it's the right time to fire them, not because they're recharged anyway and I might as well.
Rikti Invasions, Zombie Invasions, Hamidon Raids, Rikti Ship Raids, huge teams... They're even MORE boring that going solo, because at lest when I'm solo I'm tangentially involved.

And then other people would get mad that they cannot get the bomb badge because the bombers keep getting shot down. It's annoying enough trying to get 25 bombs in a singe invasion even if you have a team, the other two badges on the other hand are very easy to get.
The Elite Boss Heavies get obliterated when they show up in my experience, so the Drop Ships would be wiped out in no time at all were they to be downgraded to EBs. Besides, taking down Drop Ships seems to be the new thing to do during invasions. By my count at least 4 servers have done it now, and seem to have had a pretty good time doing so.
Now all they need is a badge

Gah! Nice job. Lot of work for no reward, if I remember correctly, but one question. What's the name of the song you used? It's stuck in my head and driving me nuts
It's Major Tom, by Shiny Toy Guns. It's a cover of Peter Schilling's take on David Bowie's Space Oddity, which might be why it sounded so familiar. Or you saw the Lincoln MKZ commercial that had it.
That is a fabulous video, Ashcraft.

Pets will always have a target if there is one available. For me, it's not stop action because there's almost always someone who has a Singularity, Dark Servent, Decoy, Imps, etc up and I just target through them.

Short Answer: The people.
Long Answer: This year and last, we scheduled time together as a group and head out into the great pea soup for a bit o' adventure. Maybe because we're on Virtue? The personalities. Their responses are priceless. The wild costumes and running dialogue in the /request and /broadcast channels made it a blast. We consumed the zone(s) we visited and one another's company and just had a blast.
And lag? We had twelve brave souls leading teams in the Isles Friday night. Twenty team leads ran Saturday night. Yeah, there was some lag. =p I can't imagine anyone who attended either year saying, "We shouldn't do it again, the lag sucked and it wasn't worth it." Especially considering that both years, I specifically posted "No rewards" of any kind. This is just a way to work on your personal scar collection because let's face it. Chicks dig scars.
PS. <salutes brethren in Champion> That's the best video, Ash. I stopped what I was doing to watch it when Cherry sent me a link.

What part of CoH does that not describe?
I like the big pig pile fights with tons and tons of effects going off in a small area.
I wish the game servers dealt with it better, but I still enjoy it.

For me it is a double edged.
On one hand: We don't have many world events and the ones we do have (X-Mas and Valentines) bite major tail bone. The Ritki event remind me of what CoX was when the devs spent more time on story lines than nerfing everything and not fixing the current problems. Issues 1-4 were what brought me to the game with cool back story and continual fillers I loved every minute and could not wait to see what was going to happen next. Like in a REAL comic book. For me the Ritki are the things I miss and I enjoy filling in "why" like they use to do. Plus it is a nice distraction from the boredom of AE missions and 5(?) year old content that so needs to be updated and so many team ups even on the low pop servers.
But the other side it is damn annoying that events like this are just thrown at us with nothing to go on to explain it. Tho as I said I like making up stuff to enjoy the event but I don't want to keep doing it. I like to be entertained by stories being told by the writer of the book(or CoX bible in this case) who say "hey check this out. I got something cool to tell you".
In short like the event and participate when it starts up and enjoy the teams to get the badges. Just wish there was more to it to draw me in to love it, and more events to keep CoX from getting stale and predictable.
Sorry for the mini rant everyone.

Except it's not a lagfest for everyone. Certainly not for me. It's fast paced, fun and exciting. I don't have a top of the line machine, but I do spend a bit here and there to upgrade it from time to time. That's all it takes.

In some of the busier zones you'll get server-side lag which has nothing to do with end users' computers. I noticed it in Cap Au on Friday and Saturday (to the point I just didn't go to invasions there) but didn't see too much in the other zones.
