Pro Tip: Form your own teams.
I never have a problem "getting teams", no matter what I'm playing.
heh, well, I do lead teams, but I must say, that gets incredibly old...

Yeah... I'm still trying to figure that one out. Because frankly? Even with the PUG guid, I can't get teammates.
-This Space Intentionally Left Blank.-
This has nothing to do with you, or any build. It's all about AE and it's current screwed up status.
Honestly, I can tell you this as someone who, after 2 years, managed to get his Sonic Res/Nrg Defender to 50...run with friends/an SG. A lot of PuGs I tried to work with in the early levels of his career were like "wth is this?", completely ignoring the fact that they were surviving longer when I buffed them.
I ended up playing him, in the low levels, as a weak blast-troller, running up and KBing tough targets and then weakening them. The only people who really liked me were scrappers/tanks who I put Disruption Field on. (i've yet to put it on a brute....xcept my buddy's).
Sonic Res is a tough road.
But when you get with a smart team in later levels, especially since you are Sonic/Dark, you will be quite welcome. Tankers of all sorts love me, especially Invuln and Willpower (willpower even more so.. Regen powered, and then I drop 40%+ res on them? wooha). And Sonic/Dark seems all sorts of stupid survivable to me, especially with the toHit debuffs and the self heal.
Don't be afraid to be crazy though. :-D
Also. it's not you.
For the first 5 levels, I find it's just as fast to streetsweep your way to the damn missions and back as it is to sit around looking for a sewer team, forming a sewer team, etc.
It's about 45 minutes to level 5.
In the general case: Yeah, it's kinda hard in the low levels for a defender. I hate to recommend it, but politely spamming 3 or 4 people who are about your level and on teams might work. "Does your team have any use for a level xx sonic defender? 40% off incoming damage" or similar. (do you have the big bubble yet? )
The key parts to an attempted self-invite:
1) Don't do it to too many people. I set the bar at 4, myself.
2) Make it about them. Do they have a use for you? If not, no prob.
3) Give them a clear, specific reason why they might want you.
4) Keep it short.

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
Find out if your server has a global chat channel you can join. Players who know a little bit more about the game will tend to hang out on the global chat channels, and they'll have a better idea what a sonic res defender can add to a team than Random Joe-Broadcast. You might have an easier time picking up some teams that way although it's still no guarantee.
I have a level 29 Sonic/Dark as well. He's fun, but I've not really pushed for having him on teams. Also, I believe all my heroes have been created and made to at least the level 15 or so mark before AE came out. With Trap and AR coming to Defender, I'm going to be making some new heroes.
I've currently been pushing for my Tanker (level 40) to get on teams, but any of my 5 37-41 characters would be lovely to get on teams and increase their levels to 45+. My characters that are in the 20 range are slowly pushing towards 30, my low 30s are slowly pushing towards my upper 30s. As much fun as having 20 character between 30 and 41 sounds...

I've had good luck on my 36 Rad/Rad by just typing "No AE, No Blind Invites - Rad/Rad" into my team field, setting it for "Looking for Any" and then just doing my own solo missions. I nearly always get at least one invite, if not a couple throughout the evening. Sometimes for a radio missions or actual mission arcs or a task force or... something. But I rarely log off having felt lonely all evening.
This is on Victory.
Jophiel, that just goes into power set descrimination usually. There's very few people that say no to a Rad/, Kin/, or Emp/. This is on a set that's less known and less "OMG I want that power set on my team" thing. Pretty much anything but those three that get excited over a Defender on the team tends to be people who just like having the AT on the team.
I'm always happy to just have people on the team. Take a big die and roll out what ATs and Powersets I have, and I'd gladly play it and make it work. From my noticing, Sonic Res is unknown by a lot of people and what it can do. Storm is hated, FF is loved (by PuGs), and Rad/ Kin/ Emp are looked for. If you're aren't any of those, it's a meh feeling from those people. If I had 8 Defenders, I'd be excited. If I had 8 of intelligent people, I'm excited about my team.

That was your cue! Put him and all his cursed kind into their place! Defenders fighting ignorance! One noob at a time
I find that the quickest way to get a team going is to form it myself. Being a lead can be exhausting, but sometimes you really only can rely on yourself to get things rolling (and once you get it going, you can pass the star as needed).
I simply pop up the team search window, peruse heroes near my level, and start sending out tells to everyone available, "Hey, wanna team up? lvl 5 defender." With a little persistence (without being annoying), this approach works a lot better than just broadcasting. Besides, you can search all zones, and filter the results so you invite a nice blend of various ATs.
If I have no luck with that approach, I just try and join an already existent team. Find someone on the search with a somewhat intelligent sounding search comment (i.e. Inv/SS tank always LFT! No AE, and send tell first please). Ask them if their team could use an awesome defender. If it turns out to be an AE team, try again

People need this for a successful team? I love my heavily Blaster/Scrapper teams when I'm the only Defender. Not that I look for that team specifically, but if the chips fall that way, I'm not usually disappointed.

Whenever I start a team for a mission I know will be tough, I usually go for one healing defender, and one buffing or Debuffing defender. It's really amazing what such a combo can do if they have a good Tanker to hide behind.
And that's before adding Controllers or anything to the mix!
If I can get away with it, I usually have Tanker + Tanker + Defender + Defender + Controller + Blaster + Blaster + Scrapper for a real hard mission. Alternatively replace a Scrapper or a Blaster with a PeaceBringer or Warshade respectively.
So don't despair, there's much use for the odd sized defenders.

Sounds about right. I've done some solo'ing, but during prime time, there have been plenty of mish groups in KR and SC on Freedom.
If I was forming a group, I wouldn't really care about the class at early levels either. I'm more concerned that the person knows how to play.

May I gently point out that all defenders are buffers and/or debuffers? Even Empathy, most often pointed to as the "healing" set, has more buffs than heals.
That nitpick aside, I rather approve of your preferred team build. I like well-rounded teams when I'm not on an all-defender team of merciless annihilation. The second tank is probably overkill on a team with multiple defenders and controllers, though--I'd swap one of those spots out for a Kheldian, rather than a scrapper or blaster.
The Way of the Corruptor (Arc ID 49834): Hey villains! Do something for yourself for a change--like twisting the elements to your will. All that's standing in your way are a few secret societies...and Champions of the four elements.
I'd be very tempted to atleast get Aid Other, then when anyone asks if I heal, I can say yes and receive the invite.
He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
Whenever someone asks me if I'm "a healer", I say "why yes, I am" because it's true. Even if I'm on my tanker or scrapper, I ALWAYS heal the damage...
... to myself.

Day 3: "Sewer team starting, PST"

Success! on day three, I had rounded up a team to venture with me in to non-AE territory! We levelled, we laughed! We had a grand old time.
I logged at lvl 7.
Day 4: (Kings Row) "Anybody have room for a lvl 7 Sonic/Dark defender?"
Broadcast:

I join the team, bunch of level 5s asking to run my missions.
Fine, I settle, let them run on my missions, we have some fun, I hit level 9 in fairly short order.
Logged off due to work the next day.
Day6-8:
Spent time in both KR and Steel looking for teams.
No one picks me up.
Tried removing sonic from my search comment.
Still nothing.
Marketed for awhile, made several million.
So now, after 3 days of being unable to get a single team, I'm left wondering.
"is it me?"
"is it my powers?"
"Soloing is boring, but it's about all I can do"
I just don't know. Anyone else unable to get teams these days? Should I reroll in to something people like?
