280 Million Inf. for a Purple IO? That's Insane!
(And honestly, Iannis, it IS pretty sweet to have a purpled IO build. It took me quite a while to get one together. But the idea of artificially changing the way the markets work to 'fix' that for the people who 'want' them but aren't willing to do the 'work' is, well, greedy, plain and simple.)
For those who want to 'pay less' for those purples, just remember that when you get your first purple drop and receive 250M for it. Be sure to give what you consider the 'excess' away to the first character that walks by.
Yaright. I thought so.

*Shrug* I give away inf all the time to teammates and in zones, often asking if any of them (teammates) need any inf for IOs.
I also tend to list purples below the last 5 for rapid sales.
Really wish the prices would be lower. Not entirely convinced it's 'what the buyer wants to pay', as I've bid for LOTG 7.5s at 1,000, 100,000, 1,000,000, 10,000,000, in varying increments and not often got them in that range. They were around 60-70,000,000 heroside a little while back. Imagine my surprise when I got a few on both sides through Merit rolls and they were 100,000,000 heroside and 120,000,000 villainside.
I guess mucho inf production + no inf removed from game = tons of cash thrown at stuff. I certainly don't begrudge people selling them for high amounts as I do that myself at times.
I do know that I'll be running more high-level content (ITFs, farms, etc) to increase the supply of purples, though.

168760: A Death in the Gish. 3 missions, 1-14. Easy to solo.
Infinity Villains
Champion, Pinnacle, Virtue Heroes
The only purple drop I've ever gotten was a particularly unpopular Fortunata Psychosis that sold for 500k
I had been flipping apocalypse IO's, though, and took a month-long break from the game. I bought a bunch at around 60,000,000 and then was able to easily sell them for 120,000,000 each when I came back. Purples have been definitely going up in price, but this is probably because supply is suffering due to the AE.
Dev Choice AE missions do drop purples, but that's not what everyone's playing, is it?
play money rains down from the sky in this game- all anyone needs to do to become filthy, stinking outrageously disgustingly rich is hold out their hands to collect some of the downpour.
and once you've got it, what is there to do with it besides buy cool stuff for your character?
infinite, easily accumulated play money + limited stuff to spend it on = big prices for the uber-good stuff.

my fire/rad is decked out and has two sets in base storage waiting for me to get up the courage to respec him (I can't find it in me to overwrite that set of Positron's Blast, dang it), although with prices the way they are I may just sell 'em and pick up new sets later once the devs figure out how to pry the famers out of AE.
The Goat is mostly finished with purples and PO's I grabbed before they stopped dropping and prices went bugnuts, but he still has a couple of things he needs. I lucked into a Ragnarok for 55 million a few weeks back that I couldn't resist crafting for sale (even I don't turn up my nose at a 100+ million inf profit after taxes).
I kinda like the current price madness- it makes the stuff you want worth going after again, instead of casually picking stuff up at BUY IT NAO prices just because you can.

For a minute there, I thought you were talking about Monopoly... which prompts me to ask:
What's the player's ultimate goal in City of Heroes nowadays: to make money or play a superhero/villain?

The two are not mutually exclusive.

And considering that you don't need purples to play the game all the way to the end you can still do either or both. All is right with the world! Glad we cleared that up.

do what you think is fun.
But if kitting out with purples is your idea of fun, then you need to be prepared to make some inf.
you can't hit 50 without racking up a lot of exp, you can't purple out without racking up a lot of inf.
/edit
and also, what Cat said.
I've got a concept stalker I'm playing in a "casual" way who's sitting on 30 million inf at level 30 from doing nothing but running story arcs and selling drops.

Well, Like I and others have said elsewhere, if I see something I want, I go about getting it. If I want a Purple that costs 200M, I'll do what I need to to get it (within the 'rules'), depending on How Bad I Want It. If that means doing TFs over and over, killing lotsa enemies, if that means finding a Target Rich Environment and going to town, if that means "EEEbillll Marketeeringgg", I'll do it. And I don't have to Have It Nao, so I use my patience to my advantage.
Heck,
TFs for merits,
Merits for High Price Enhancements,
Enhancements for Inf,
Inf for Purples.
UUUUNPOSSSSSIBBLLLEEE!!!
