This is his post/blog about his last day with CoH. He goes back and does the exact samething, then wonders why he gets the response.

I'm really unsure on whether or not he "gets" it. He might get it, but he might not. What I find most interesting is that he unabashedly links to that Always Black story (whose title you cannot post on these boards) without seeming to realise that, in the context, he is the fascist [censored].
Yeah, yanno, this guy is definitely the mother of all toolboxes for violating the unspoken social norms that make up any collective group. And truth be told, I have deep questions about the efficacy and design of his "experiment" with Twixt but...

When Myers took a break from the virtual world and went on vacation for a couple of weeks with his wife and daughters, players noticed his absence. One player started a discussion thread that claimed Myers had been banned from the game because he had called a fellow player a "n----r."

Another posting claimed Twixt was a convicted pedophile.

This pretty much speaks for the sad, consequence-less state of the Internet. This is the kind of stuff you'd never say to people IRL unless you were just looking for a fight. Seriously. This is just a more academic way of phrasing what was so eloquently expressed in Penny Arcade comic.
Also this last line here (again FTFA):

That there is just sociological fact. Doesn't take much more than a cursory glance of history to see that it's pretty easy to villify that which is not like you.
*shrugs* So yeah, the dude is a [censored] griefer, but to say his work was entirely without point, or to say that we (as a community of gamers) are all victims of his terrible griefing and entirely without any fault whatsoever is pretty weaksauce.

I don't think its the fact that he received negative responses that shocked him, it was more what the responses contained - for example the death threats.
Although his method may be considered "cheap" or "unfair" by other players, the fact remains that the ability to do what he was doing remains in the game because the lawmakers (read: developers) deem it fair and a valid method of playing the game. Just because there is some "unwritten law" created by the player base, he has no obligation to follow it and is free to play the game how he wishes so long as it is within the guidelines set forth by the devs.
I can imagine people becoming frustrated having their characters teleported in front of an unbeatable robot, but there are ways to deal with it: Stay away from the guy with teleport foe!
I find it funny, in almost any video game that contains online play, people will always find some something "cheap" about one way or another of defeating someone, yet 99% of the time that method will remain in said game. Typical examples include sniping, camping, bunny hopping, in one game I played the rocket launcher itself was frowned upon and called a "noob cannon" only because every other gun required some sort of effort in aiming while the rocket launcher didn't. In every single one of these situations the only reason people complain is because they are normally defeated by the person using these tactics.
So un-noteworthy. I can't believe this actually spawned an article, let alone a four page thread...

ok, I am right now studying psychology, and what i see is a guy with really no life making an excuse to abuse others then wright a book on it and make money.

Honestly, out of all the posts here, there, and on the paper's site i think StarkFist has given the best response that i've read.
Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...
Okay, what am I missing here?
Every time I go into a PvP zone, it's made very clear that there are no rules. Everything goes. That's been the mantra on every occasion I've set foot in there.
So this professor operates under that agreement, and gets pages worth of hate for it? I'm confused.

Try reading some of the posts in response to the article. It's not as simple, yet confusing, as you think. If nothing else, the professor misrepresents his behavior and the responses to it in the article.
Honestly, the most insightful and accurate responses i've seen regarding what actually occurred are those in the article's comments section by StarkFist and iltat.

Just another reason to avoid pvp. Competition is lame unless you get to look your opponent in the eye.
However I think it's interesting that people get so wound up over a video game, but that's nothing new.
Heroes : Angrem (50 Stone tank), Exo Inferis (50 Fire blaster), Exo Proteus (50 ill/emp), IceVengance (50 cold defender)
Villains : AtomBomb (50 Rad/Kin corruptor), Aleks (50 SS/Inv brute), StoneLethal (50 EM/Stone brute), Davroz (50 Bots/Dark mastermind)
<QR>
So this guy goes into a PvP zone and ruins others enjoyment of the game. People express their disapproval. Guy writes a book detailing how the internet turns people into slobbering serial rapists.
Did I get this right?

Twixt was... I'm not sure how to explain it. He stood around and droned people. If he was attacked or threatened (in game, such as it looking like someone might kill his character) he ran. Either into the base or out of the zone or wherever.
I'll let you decide how much fun that was for people in the zone with him. But you should probably be able to guess (unless you're Twixt, I suppose) that people are going to get frustrated at your behaviour. Frustrated people tend to rant in whatever manner is available to them. In this case that would be the pages and pages about what an idiot Twixt is.
Yes, there are no rules against what he did. You'll notice that no action was ever taken against him by NCSoft over his behaviour in the PvP zones. That doesn't mean he wasn't making the game as unfun as possible for the people around him.
And yeah, I'm so thrilled to learn that he needed to do a study to learn that people don't like those they consider jerks and griefers. Or that groups tend to favor people who follow the norms of that group. Really shocking stuff. This wasn't funded with any sort of grant money, right?
"Mastermind Pets operate...differently, and aren't as easily fixed. Especially the Bruiser. I want to take him out behind the woodshed and pull an "old yeller" on him at times." - Castle
I think he tailored his behaviour knowing how people would react to what he was doing so he could get the results he wanted in order to back up his obviously pre-existing opinions on social groups and gaming communities. Not real research at all, just geared to get what he wanted. Of course that tribe is going to whack him with a stick, he came in with the purpose of agitating them, not becoming a part of the tribe.

So why isn't anyone offended by the idea that other players would verbally abuse and insult someone (including making real-world threats against the player) because his behavior in game isn't considered appropriate?

Personally seems like this guy went out and picked fights with other people first. He claims that he followed the rules, but he did harass them for the looks of it. To a certain point where people just could not put up with this guy. It seems that he would spend hours of a day just to Auto Kill each and every person he saw next to that drone. An obnoxious thing to do, and when he asked other heroes to "aid" him they said no, because it is common sense, and down right rude. People are doing what the zone was designed for battling the opponents. He was doing nothing near this, he would TP Foe each and every person into a drone. He has no right even being in that zone if thats all he was doing. If i was going against this guy and all he'd do is TP Foe me every time i come within site, after awhile i would definetly Report him for Harassment because thats all he is doing. When people continued to tell him that it is not right and is looked down on he continued to do it. He knew people didnt like it, he just wanted to test people. People use this game as a way to get away from the real world for a little bit, and they come to the game to enjoy it have some fun. BEING TP'D OVER AND OVER AGAIN IS NOT FUN, NOR IS SEEING OTHER TEAMMATES BEING DRONED.
Did the GMs ever ban him for his actions?
Just a thought- is anyone sure that the people who we included texts from aren't actually friends of his saying such things so he can publish the desired results?
On a side note, I have put in for a grant to study the effects of rain and if I stand outside without an umbrella, or any head covering, my hair would get wet.

Same mentality that leads players to play, compete, and smack talk on games like CS. Because virtually you are looking your opponent in the eye.

Contrary to some stereotypes, people that play online computer games like "City of Heroes" aren't adolescent misfits. They tend to be what most would consider mainstream adults.
[/ QUOTE ]
That does make sense. Even though a guy could be 30 years old and yet has the mentality of a 13 year old, while in politically correct that he's an adult I would call that "mainstream adult".
