So what's the worst.....
Ouch, that is a nasty experience!
I don't team too much so I don't have too much to share. I was fighting GM's in Croatoa once with a Fire/Kin controller who only performed adequately because of my constant commands. He was using hardly any of his powers to any effect, no fulcrum shifts, no speed boosts, no fire imps. This is despite the fact he did have all three powers.
We did get there in the end, someone relogged their Ill/Rad
50 earth/emp whose only earth powers were fossilize (which he didn't use) and animate stone.
Heelahz forevah!

So I did the Kahn TF the other day on a team that had a level 50 fire/thermal. I have a 50 mind/thermal, so I know that thermal can be a great mixed buffing/debuffing set. Having a thermal and an earth/kin on the team, I thought we'd be golden.
I was left twitching, gibbering incoherently to myself for hours after the TF after watching her in action in the final mish.
Nobody looked at her power selections until we really needed her to do more than run in and faceplant (which she mastered), which was in the final mish. That was obviously an oversight on all of our parts, and the team leader confessed he never thought to look either when I sent him a tell after looking at her powers in the final mish.
She skipped Forge, Thaw, Melt Armor, and Heat Exhaustion. She apparently didn't know that Thermal buffs needed to be reapplied. She only used Cauterize for healing from Thermal, despite also having Warmth.
She skipped Fire Cages, Cinders, Hot Feet, Smoke, and Flashfires. Her attacks on Reichsman consisted almost entirely of Bonfire, Fire Imps, and occasionally her blasts from the Fire Mastery Epic Pool.
She took all of the the Medicine pool except Stimulant. Most of the time, instead of using Cauterize to heal, she would usually run up to someone and use Aid Other and then run away from the team to use Aid Self.
She had no vet badges. What was possibly more frightening, was that her toon's name and her global name weren't the same, so she probably has more than one of these running around. This was "Fiery name" and her global was "Atomic name." Yes, I left the name out intentionally, as this post isn't meant to call her out.
So what's the most disturbingly bad example of a controller that you've seen in-game?

Did you, I don't know, SAY anything to her? Maybe some politely phrased constructive criticism? Maybe start off by asking to have your shields refreshed, and work from there?
This is an MMO, it's a social game, and that's pretty much what can make it awesome or terrible. You said it yourself- not vet badges. She's clearly new. Newbs (as opposed to n00bs) are usually pretty receptive to advice if it makes their toon more effective and powerful. They might not understand the way certain game mechanics work, like us grizzled vets do, and frankly the language in the "info" menu can be very confusing.
What IS really disturbing is that she got to 50 without anyone correcting her weird habits. Sure, the onus is on her to learn how to play as effectively as possible, but it is also in your best interests to her her get there.

Mind Controller with only Levitate, Dominate, and Total Domination. Sleeps were "useless" and confuse "steals all the xp". Fear "makes everything run". Never got into the reason for not having TK. They probably couldn't figure out how to use it.
Their secondary was Storm, more specifically, just Gale, O2 Boost, and Snow Storm (of which only O2 Boost ever got used). That was it. No Freezing Rain because it was "useless" (HOW?!). No Hurricane "because of the knockback" (probably related to the high likelihood of not being able to use TK well). Ditto for Tornado. Lightning Storm? Too long a recharge.
The stupid on that LGTF team was palpable.

I was playing my Force Field/ Defender yesterday on a team that included a /Force Field Controller. We ran into an AV during the mission and things went nutty in large part because the /Force Field refused to use her shields. She didn't even have the big shield turned on until the final seconds of the fight even though I had spent over half the fight dead.
In total my character died 6 times during the 15 minutes it took to kill the AV.
I wasn't angry or anything. The player was perfectly polite. But it was definitely odd to watch the team melt in front of the AV and not have the /Force Fielder think "Maybe I should be using shields." There were a total of around 35 deaths spread among the 6 characters in that group.
It seems to be part of a trend of Force Fielders who don't shield. The last 4 Force Fielders that I've joined with either only used the shields at the beginning of the mission and never again, or didn't even have the shields (!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Some of them may not realize that shields stack with mine, or think that my shield alone caps people's defenses--which it does, but only as long as they are underneath my big bubble.
When I was paying the SG base rent in Atlas on Justice, I heard a n00b tank advertising himself as a tank/healer. Out of curiosity I jumped into the AE to check him out...
No vet or any other kinds of badges exept MA. All the attacks in his secondary, only a couple powers from his primary (and he skipped his mez protection). He did have the entire medicine pool though.

Where is this lunacy coming from because I have been seeing it alot since AE dropped.. can these all bew brand new players that just have no idea how to build an effective character ??
Ive seen a LOT of this.. and Im not talking just people not taking things for concept or thematic reasons.. im talking staples... necessary powers for the set to be effective not taken...
Ive played mostly on Justice which to me seems to be one of the more " educated " servers but it seems as if the population of Justice has gotten smaller IMO..
So i recently started playing on Virtue after some friends had moved there...... The Horror ive seen...
Willpower tanks with Mind over Body and Rise to the Challenge saying Willpower sucks because they keep dying...
Tanks with THREE travel Powers and no Fitness Pool...
Cold defenders with no benumb...
oh yeah we had a high level rad with no Radiation Infection and no Lingering Radiation...
A Wp/Mace tank that had not taken Clobber Shatter or Crowd Control by level 49 !!!!!!!!! FORTY NINE !!!!!!!! because they were too slow...
Seriously.. where are these people coming from ???

Um seriously, how do you think we found out that she didn't know shields needed to be reapplied? We kept asking her to give them to us and kept asking her to use powers that would help the team. The team leader (the kin) and I both kept asking her for buffs. Sometimes she would actually buff us. Only sometimes.
We kept asking her to hosp when she died instead of laying there begging for inspirations that we were actually using for the fight against Reichs. She was insistent that she was only there to heal though.
For the record, she had a SG. I'm presuming they might have had something to do with her being PL'd and clueless unfortunately. Could be wrong there, but that's my guess.
After dealing with her for a little over 3 hours for that TF, I one-starred her and went on my way.

In b4 "power selection isn't your business" guy comes along.
I love it when people try to put other people down because they dont have the powers in a set that you would want to have....it was their toon not yours. Any person has a right to play how they want and to pick what powers they want and to say all that stuff is only prob making them not want to ask people who have played for long times due to rudeness.
That only goes so far, however. If your build is significantly variant from the norm (Tanker without armors, MM without pets, Controller without controls, etc) then it's up to you to tell the team up front. It's not unreasonable to expect a certain level of capability from a given player and AT when inviting them to a team, especially for a Task Force.
If you say up front that you haven't taken X, Y and Z powers and they invite you anyway, then they need to suck it up, but if you were invited to be a primary debuffer on a team and you have no debuffs, or were invited to be primary tanker and you have no armor toggles... that's info that needs to be shared with your teammates up front. They shouldn't have to go looking at your power listing to discover you're incapable of doing the very thing they were expecting and perhaps counting on you to do.
In the case of the OP, the Controller should have spoken up and said something to the effect of "I don't have my debuffs and I don't like to use my secondary, is that okay?" Then everyone is informed and the team can either decline or proceed ahead informed that the Controller isn't going to be much help in the debuff department and perhaps seek out another team member to help fill that niche. Of course that's assuming that the Controller in question knew enough to realize that his/her build was variant. Which can be a big if.

I agree that its the right for anyone to chose his or her powers any way they want to because it is their character, but she in time will learn that her character will be completely ineffective in team situations against higher tier AVs. She will find that she will not get invites unless the team can overcome all of her shortcomings. The bad thing is that your TF team didn't realize this until the last moment.

From someone playing Ice/sonic! Err sorry that was an easy one.
What's most disturbing is that now newbs with vet badges are getting to 45 faster. At least before, it took some intense begging to get that far. So we could at least hope that they would *gasp* play in the meantime and so get a freaking clue.
I saw an Illusion/Emp troller who skipped PA for the healz.
I saw lvl 50 grav/kin with no sb and no singularity.
I have seen a bubbler who used force bolt and detention bubble every chance they had.
I have seen many a kin with sb say they aren't sb drones and stop asking for sb. I stood my blaster there for one round of attacks and did not fight. The kin said, you need to fight. I told him I was not just some blaster drone who blasts everything in site. But I would support the team by running assault. The team leader, a tank got what was happening. He promptly booted the kin for not using a power they had chosen.
Long story, but there is a point. Some people are new, and the post-coh-apocalyptic world of AE lets them get to 50 to a little too easy. That's OK, because you can always provide some constructive criticism. Most people accept it well as they honestly do not know what powers they should choose. Knowing you have a great power, selecting it and choosing not to use it is far worse.
What worries me is that all of these new characters that are so horribly unsuitable for gameplay... someone has to be helping them level their characters somehow, right? Or is it even worse than I thought, and AE is actually enabling people to run horrible builds through missions using Flurry and Air Superiority, Aid Other and Aid Self and nothing but?
