Are Cold Defenders Rare?

AE! From what I have seen, it has ruined the game imho!

The implementation of AE was, IMO, poorly done. Anyone with half a brain *should* have seen the consequences of the initial implementation. Personally I was surprised they allowed full XP for player designed missions.

Firstly, I've ignored it for the most part, besides making my own missions that are actually story driven (which is what it was supposed to be for in the first place).

Secondly, that'd be penalizing the people who are using it for the right reasons if they lowered the XP. It is designed to give people more story to dabble with instead of people that have been here for 5 years doing the same arcs over and over.

I understand why they did it and enjoy making my own arcs, however, it's only bred it to be easier for people to abuse the game how the devs didn't want, farming. I dislike farming to start, so I've just ignored it. Yes, I realize there are people doing the arcs for story reasons and the like. I admire them for that. However, it's the greater number of farmers that make me not want to jump on a broadcasted AE team, especially in Atlas.

I thank those who are using it correctly (including myself though not many have tried my arc) and hope those who don't use it correctly are smashed by the GMs in a great horrible gory fashion. It'd be lovely to see. My suggestion might be those who have arcs that are reported as farms to maybe be restricted in their publish ability in AE. Just a thought, maybe a 3 strike and you can't publish for X amount of time rule.

I agree with this. After having done a fire/cold to 50 and a cold/dark to 50, the only thing I can really say I like abou tthe defender version better is that you get sleet at 26 vs 35 for corrs.

lvl 35 is a major PITA. All the other powers seem to come soon enough as a corr to not make much of a difference when playing the def version. Those 9 levels are definitely tangible though.

Benumb comes 10 levels later, but imo isn't a game changer like sleet.

[/ QUOTE ]
The downside of sleet coming earlier for defenders is that your 3rd ST blast in your secondary comes significantly later as well.

[/ QUOTE ]

I've only paired it with sonic and dark for defs. I think the really late 3rd blast is only a problem for ice and rad (mostly ice tho, cause nut bolt is so fast), the rest seem to be able to fill up on enough st or spammable aoe attacks by ~20, which is basically on par with fire and ice for corrs.

I hear you though, I don't think I could make an /ice def. They are powerful, but 28 is a long road to get BiB.

I generally try to team my defs and corrs most of the time though, so for me the earlier sleet is pretty important. I think I'd have to pl a /cold corr if I do it again. That's just me though. But wow is my fire/cold way stronger than either of my cold defs heh.

To answer the Post question, there is not a lack of Chilly Defenders, at least not on Virtue Blue Side. Lately, it seems there are lots of cold toons, of various ATs, on Virtue.

As far as the AE thing goes, I enjoy doing both the story driven missions created by players, and the farm types.

There are a lot of creative players who have spent many hours putting together missions for me to explore. I, myself, have created one story mission, and take much pride in it. I had one player actually send email to express his appreciation of it. That was cool. There are many times I log on and want nothing more than to discover, and complete, a story mode mission I haven't done before.

There are also times I log on with friends and just enjoy chatting while doing a farm mission. We start chatting, joking, and goofing around, NOT paying attention to any story, but still wanting to play the game, and farms offer that alternative.

I'll be a 5-year vet at the end of June, and I enjoy having the option of how I play the game, in whatever mood or attitude I'm in at the moment I log on.

The key word there is OPTION. AE is out in the open, and players are using it for whatever reason. If some want to use it "incorrectly," then adjust whatever elements make it "incorrect." Do NOT punish the players for discovering ways of manipulating what they are given. They're human, and that's what humans do... they're innovative. We started with rubbing sticks together to make fire, and now we have stoves and microwave ovens. We started banging sticks and rocks together, and now we have electric guitars and drums. Give us the ability to create missions, and we'll develop them in ways great and unforseen, and in ways the developers knew would/could be done... but did nothing, and let it become a player/developer fiasco for some people.

Just keep the option available for each individual to enjoy his/her play style.

My only suggestion for AE is to have its only chat channel that can only be read while in an AE building. Combine all the AE buildings, of each individual server, into a zone of its own. That way, players can select/de-select having the AE broadcasts showing in their chat windows. This would eliminate a lot of complaints from those chatting in zones where an AE building exists.

Benumb looks like next to nothing. You'd probably never notice it if someone cast it on something that wasn't you.

I didn't mean to open a can of worms. Like I said, I just came back to the game. My question about Cold Defenders has been answered and I thank everyone for it. Let's just end things there ^^

I've played with one Cold Defender (and 1 Corrupter) ever in three years of playing. And most of this is on Virtue, where Defenders and Controllers are not hard to find. I don't team heaps, I often solo or duo by myself, but I have found Cold Defenders very rare.

I have no idea what Benumb or Heat Loss look like. That says something

So I'd say if you're trying to avoid FoTM, Cold is a very good place to start.

Benumb looks pretty much like freezeray. It is a slow moving snowball. It makes the "zing" sound identical to freezeray as well.

Heatloss is a double hands up cast that old flares used.

Benumb has no projectile. It's just a hand thrust/shake/whatever and ice chunks fall off the target.

The slow moving snowball w/ Freeze Ray sound is Infrigidate.

EDIT: In that video, starting at 0:20, the Corr uses Aim, Infrigidate, then Benumb, in that order.

Benumb can be seen used again at 2:35.

Right you are. I haven't fired up any of my colds in some time and the set recycles so many animations it gets muddy in my old brain

Umm, this is already in place. If you are caught repeatedly making farm missions you get your slots locked. It literally is 3 strikes and you're out. If all 3 slots get locked you lose access to AE, permanently.

That may change now that you can buy more slots. Oh well, niether here nor there.

To the OPs question: I saw Cold defenders all over the place when they first got the set. Since then it has tapered off quite a bit. It is a good enough set at high levels that if I am looking to kill an AV or GM I look for a Rad or a Cold, in no particular order of preference.

It's a good set and you don't see a whole lot of them, so if it sounds like fun, go for it.

The real problem with Cold is the graphical effects, same with Cold Armour. I can't even begin to imagine the pain of spending my entire exsistance with 7 snowmen.

I am just returning to the game after being gone for quite a while. I am wondering, is Cold a rare primary choice for defenders? My main is a Sonic/Electric Def, but I've played TA, Storm, and Rad to high levels as well.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think Sonic/Electric would probably have the title of king for uncommon sets ("It's my favorite!" arguments already null, the OP started with it as his main), probably because Sonic/Rad and Sonic/Sonic are typically chosen by people with an eye for performance goals (e.g., -DEF and -RES or -RES and more -RES) due to the nature of Sonic/* itself.

The likely reason for Cold not being as popular for Defenders is that the ATs hero-side tend to be much more focused in their particular goals, making a specialist with a single focus quite useful. Whereas villain ATs tend to be much broader in their style.
I.e., a Blaster already brings a ton of damage to the table, so make it invincible with FF or whatever. A Brute on the other hand, while not weak, only needs some defensive support to be made invincible and once survival is shored up, the rest of the time can focus on its killing power.

Thats a really good point.

I'd also suspect that the purely defensive gap between FF and Cold is narrowing hero-side these days as well. Its becoming increasingly easier for squishy heroes to get their own modicum of Defence through set bonuses and so on to close the gap between what a Defence-specced Cold Domination Defender provides and the soft cap.

Cold with Manuevers and Arctic Fog slotted for Defence give you about 37% team defence? Its pretty easy for any teammate, even a Blaster, to make up the shortfall with Hover or CJ and a few sets.

This is probably the best point one can make for cold vs FF for defense values. 45% is great, but with CJ and a 3% Defense IO any blaster is looking at 43% defense. Which is plenty of defense for a squishy. Especially in the days when blasters are going around soft capping their defense to ranged attacks with no outside help.

The other Idea being that... if any of the other 7 members of the team bring any kind of defense things will end up soft capped anyway. Cold ends up *real* close and in most cases its more then enough, in the cases of no extra defense, its still enough considering the resists and massive slows it brings to mitigate damage further.

The reason Cold Defenders are not common is probably due to the fact that they can protect from cold but are totally vulnerable to it.

It makes no sense to protect people against a element but be totally vulnerable to it, but that seems to be the Defender's lot in life. They can keep others safe but cannot help themselves.

Another reason there maybe few cold defenders is that the set is still new to Blue side. Def just got ice a few issues back I belive.

You forget Arctic Fog provides about 30% resistance to Cold, Fire, and Energy damage to the user and everyone around them.

Unless you're the defender creating the golems, the graphical effects get really annoying. That's my point of view, but I suspect it's shared by others. I don't go through all the effort in the costume generator so the results can be obliterated by someone's overbearing ice shields. And it gets difficult to keep track of who's who on the team when they all look the same.

Don't get me wrong, I love the defense the shields give, but the fx suck.

And all that costume obliteration for a meager portion of the total play time.

The fx are meaningless (from an aesthetic standpoint) from us or any of our buffing buddies.

Someone's gotta say it.

Probably the biggest reason Cold defenders are underplayed is because there's no heal in the set. Sad but true.

Does it make the few that do exist even more valuable, though? I think so.
