Be surprised I actually HAVE been into the WoW forums and the steam forums (which a truly, truly terrible places the pair of them). You do learn to drown out the drivel though and just except that use the WoW forums (and those that post on the Steam Forums) are essentially the archetypal(sic) "Counterstrike Kiddies".

To be fair I have come to expect well, just plain more, from the City of Heroes community, it's your own fault people, your too friendly.

I admit it was probably the style of the post that did it, it was frankly rude, confrontrational and...well..whiney, I know that brings out the worst in people but at the time I was peeved about that quote from Avatea, I probably should have looked at the Dark Knight returns poster I have on my wall, taken a deep breath and gone "yes Joker, why am I being so serious about something that in the long run, really doesn't make a difference to me or the world..." it can be scary when you take your life advice from a psychotic clown but that line really does work when it comes to posting things on the internet...

I know all too well the types of a$$hattery that goes on in forums like WoW. Its pointless to have any sort of conversation in any venue that blizzard hosts because of the types of people they draw.

I'm convinced that Blizzard has a large part to do with cultivating a certain type of mentality and catering to it inside their games.

Hmm an interesting idea.

To be fair there's probably some merit in it, the loot system and now the achievements system all encourage a level of one-upmanship and general "I'm better than you because I play this game for longer each, I can raid seven nights week or I got REALLY lucky with the random drop system" and WoW, like Everquest, stuck to the whole "you need to devote serious amounts of time to this game to actually get anywhere once you've hit level cap" syndrome that City of Heroes distinctly lacks.

Anyone, even casual players, can eventually get 'the best loot' do the occasional taskforce, save up your merits for the high demand recipes or if you're after purples simple blow those merits on random rolls and pray to get lucky on something worth a lot.

To be fair the mythical casual player wont actually WANT purple IOs, they're not into the whole min-maxing thing IOs represent (to a not so major degree as WoW loot) so they can just poddle along within the game and generally have a blast smacking the hell out of bad guys for 30 minutes every night.

Blizzard do seem to silently encourage the aformentioned posting style and I think I know why...

It makes any kind of sensible feedback on the forums completely ignoreable because it's on the forums...a place filled with such drivel and dire awfulness that it is a cesspool of filth and venturing into it would be utterly pointless.

Case in point, any kind of decent feedback the devs want, they actually visit a third party forum, ElitistJerks (not as bad as the name sounds honestly) because that forum is where all the hardcore theorycrafters hang out because their sick of the BS on the official forums.

Even then the devs can and will actually ignore any decent feedback because they "know what's best" (while I admit Issue 13 PvP changes did suffer from this a tad, WoW is much worse) despite the fact the community can and will point out the major flaws in their proposed plans (Hunters had a massive nerf patch recently which the devs claimed was balancing their DPS when the EJ community pointed out the nerf went that tad too far and pushed hunters past the point of doing decent DPS and into doing the worst DPS for a DPS class in the game, even if well played).

Atleast here the devs do tend to listen to the playerbase when there's a major gripe (issue 13 PvP withstanding admittedly but you don't know what's planned further down the road) and not just wave their hand dismissively going "Pshaw peasants, your theorycrafting means nothing, we know where it's at" (despite the fact they seem to rubberband constantly on hunters who really are the red headed step child of the WoW community).

I can deal with that.

What even more difficult than that is trying ot have a civil conversation with a large number of group-thinkers who consider anything other than their own ideology to be "bigotry" of some kind, or who are unable despite even the most Herculean of efforts to see their won sophistry or the blindness of their own position or the fact that they are, in fact, the bigots.

For poops and giggles, go into the Jezebel.com forum and say something like "I'm not a big fan of very public breast feeding" or something equally inocuous (take your pick) and see how you're treated.

As you mentioned, its the same with Everquest. At one point they cared about player feedback but at some point the devs took the helm and decided that they were in charge of game direction. Maybe the Lead or the Producer said they wanted to change directions I don't know.

When Blizzard first started, I believe they truly cared about developing games with the player base in mind. However the fact they allow the 'battle.net kiddie' activity to persist in their free battle.net content, their free forums, their paid wow forums and their paid wow content leads me to think its all about the biggest draw for the most money at this point. Let the players be damned.

I love this thread. "The devs listen to us, so NCsoft, don't use the money for anything else. We have control over you!"

Like anyone from the actual NCsoft company that calls the shots visits any of their games' forums. I doubt the devs visit that much either. Like an auto-dialer that only posts stupid responses and speculation.

I'm positive McD nuggets aren't actually food

[/ QUOTE ]

There was the famous line in Red Dwarf when discussing three skeletal women (literally been dead for hundreds/thousands of years), in the episode where they rescued Kryten

'They have less meat on them, than a Chicken McNugget'

This was subsequently dubbed such that you couldn't really hear the 'Mc', but still knew it was there.

Apprantly McDonalds got upset and I guess no-one could prove that a Chicjen McNugget actually had ANY meat, so they didn't want to go to court just in case. As it was entirely possible that the bare bones had more meat than said nugget.

My apologise TonyV, you also make that list then

As for That_Ninja, if you haven't noticed, the topic of discussion has actually moved completely away from the original post and its topic, I essentially admitted I was, for all purposes, being a prat.

It has now moved on to how we're all grateful the devs aren't the WoW devs and how these forums are actually very good manners and behavior wise compared to virtually any other MMO out there.

Since NCSoft bought out the IP of CoH from Cryptic, they invested in hardware upgrades to the servers, gave the Paragon crew an excellent Silicon Valley address (a stone's throw from the Google compound) and their own studio, and enabled Paragon Studios to go from 20 employees to 50 employees.

Sit down and calculate the cost of employment, including benefits, for a whole year for an extra 30 people. Also consider that they've continued hiring in the past half year even while the economy was tanking.

No one should think that Paragon isn't getting funded. It is very clear that NCSoft is investing heavily in Paragon Studios with the hope that future paid expansions, like Going Rogue, will put the CoH franchise on a track to increase in subs and compete with competition, and continue to be profitable for a long time. There is still growth investing in Paragon Studios, anyone who argues against that is just wrong.

Whether that would continue if Going Rogue doesn't do well is another matter. Until then, NCSoft is one hundred percent behind investing in Paragon Studios.

IMO, they should stick all their money from lineage II and Guild Wars into this game... and take all their money from all their other games besides CoX/Guild Wars/and Lineage II... and stick all that money into Aion...

And then we willz allz smilez? Amirite?

>.> I started out making an informative post, then got distracted by a fun tangent (like I always do). Doesn't mean I have no interest in being helpful, just that I like discussion, period. Doesn't really matter what it is.

Still, going to state once again that I'm sure a fairly significant percentage of what this game makes does indeed go back into the game, just that some of it is also siphoned off to try and produce other games that either ourselves, or the rest of the world, will find just as if not more enjoyable.

...and once again giving a shameless plug where hopefully NCSoft will look: Please get an International version of Blade and Soul out as soon as possible.

I think the people who have manged to run a MMO distribution company should be the ones to decide how the money is spent. Everyone who currently has run such a business for more then 5 years raise your hand.

Posted

I think that CoX money is going to bankroll Blade & Soul's marketing department's urgent need to spitshine their Bentleys.

If NCsoft doesn't need to have the government take over and force them to make good games, I'm pretty sure they're doing okay.
