Customization?!

My point is that going forward, the devs are more likely to try to push the graphics envelope a bit more. Like how new costume pieces look better than old ones a lot of the time...they aren't that likely to be less conservative with that kind of thing. There are limits...but expect that new zones and content will try to top old zones in the graphics department.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's fine with me as long as they don't make minor improvements that gut my framerate again. The nice new costume pieces are great, but they aren't what came to mind when I heard "graphics upgrade".

Minor upgrades should equal minor performance hits. If I'm taking a major hit, the new stuff better be smokin' hot.

For me, power customization is hue shifting and maybe the ability to pick emanation points/animations. Hue shifting is more important, and I'll explain why in the next paragraph. It is entirely RP fluff to me, but it allows me to make my characters just the way I want them.

If we could just hue shift, suddenly fire doesn't have to be fire. I could turn it green and say my character consumes enemies in their own burning jealousy. Radiation doesn't have to be radiation. Turn it a dark purple, and it could be the inevitability of fate that my character casts upon her foes (I'd also love the dark purple set to a background of Dark Miasma). We become unbound by what things were made to look like and can go in our own direction with it.

It might just be fluff, but I feel that allowing that sort of creative freedom is a big thing. It opens up a lot of doors to character customization.

You fail logic forever. You are looking for absolutes, and if I disagree with your absolute, you immediately ascribe an absolute to me and begin dissecting it. That's a straw man, because I'm not vouching for absolutes.

You claim people who don't like graphical updates are people whose systems can't handle it. That is not true because I have a counter example. A few of them, in fact. Your supporting examples do not prove all people who don't want better graphics don't have the machines for it, it proves that SOME people who don't want better graphics don't have the machines for it, but you have no claim over all, because I have proof that SOME people who don't want better graphics DO have the machines to handle them and don't want them for other reasons.

Standard question from an IQ test: "If some greens are reds and some reds are blues, are some reds blues?" The answer is no, because you cannot say whether the reds that are greens are the same greens that are blue.

You can't speak for everybody, that's all I'm saying. And since you're basing your point on dismissing certain people like they don't exist or shouldn't matter, I say you are wrong. You assume people who don't want better graphics don't have the machines for it, and you are wrong. SOME people are like that, SOME people are not, and you really have no standing to step over the latter group unless you can find reliable, quantifiable information proving that they are a negligible number worthy of ignoring, to which effect anecdotal evidence is simply insufficient.

You want better graphics, and that's fine. Don't dredge up false absolutes to back yourself up and discredit people who disagree with you. Your opinion as a customer be able should stand strong on its own without having to resort to "many others" as a crutch.

If failing logic means that I can avoid dipping into the vat of insanity that seems to be driving you in this thread then fine...I fail logic forever.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm not vouching for them either. My whole point in this is to counter the argument that graphical upgrades WILL lead to misuse of bloom, that they WILL sacrifice the style of COX for meaningless detail and that they WILL cause major performance problems for most people. None of those things can be known for sure.

I said: 'Sure there are people who don't want(or care about) graphics updates. A lot of them have sub-par gaming systems already and can't turn the graphics up anyway.'

That statement doesn't exclude any other group simply because I didn't list every single reason why someone might not want to have a graphic update happen.

[ QUOTE ]
You can't speak for everybody, that's all I'm saying.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm not attempting to speak for everybody. But that's not stopping you from trying your hardest to make it look like that's what I'm doing. I never used the words 'everybody' or 'all people' or 'most players' in my posts.

What I CAN tell you is that in my experience with the gamers I have come across and the people's systems that I've worked on and people who have been coming to LAN parties and tournaments with me, I have hardly ever heard any of them argue that they don't want graphics updates because they dread bloom and the way it's overused in the game industry. Or that they are afraid that a game will sacrifice style for shinier graphics. Mostly it will be about sacrificing GAMEPLAY for graphics. And they usually applies to NEW games...not established ones.

Most of the time a person will say they want to be able to play x or y game or its expansion. They want to know if their system can run it. If it can...fine...if it can't they know they have to upgrade. A lot of them don't want to spend the money on an upgrade(sometimes its financial constraints)...even if they have an old system that needs it anyway because what they were playing was fine with them. That is unless the game they want to play is really important to them. Then they decide to shell out the cash.

That pattern is consistent because people don't want to spend money on gaming rig upgrades if they can get away with using what they have. So until they are 'forced' to do so by a new game coming or a current game getting some kind of graphical facelift then they won't. And they will [censored] about it constantly.

No one has ever come to me saying: 'I have money to spend on this upgrade but that stinking bloom is ruining all games...so I'm not gonna.'

I have had gamers say to me that they didn't like the graphics of certain games no matter how many bells and whistles the developers add to them. That's natural...but Mr. Joe-on-the-street seldom even knows what his graphic settings DO...much less be concerned with too much detail level vs. style.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

You realize that this works both ways right? Unless you have some kind of quantifiable proof that older hardware ISN'T the drawback for most people who don't want to see graphics updates...then you're talking out of your hat too. You're just trying to make it seem like you have some kind of inside knowledge.

I've been working in IT for 14 years. Currently, the company that I work for has contracts for warranty service for both Dell and HP products in my country. We do IT support and PC repairs for a wide range of people and companies here as well. I build and upgrade gaming rigs in my spare time for friends and other people who can't/don't want to do it themselves. I have, up til a couple years ago, been helping a local game group host LAN tournaments and other events here. I can safely say that I come into contact with lots of gamers both hardcore and casual and most of my friends are gamers themselves.

I think that should count for something, but you probably don't think it does. In any case, that's what I have been basing my opinions on.

Can I still say I speak for everyone? No. But my opinion is no less valid than yours and at least isn't based off some personal vendetta that you currently have against the gaming industry. I'm not even disagreeing with you on the over-emphasis developers place on graphics these days. I'm simply saying, that its very unlikely that as large a number of people share your POV, when in my experience, most average gamers just don't care about that stuff.

[ QUOTE ]
You want better graphics, and that's fine.

[/ QUOTE ]

I have NEVER said that in this thread...or on these boards. So you can stop trying to go for shock value and deal with facts now. I said that I wanted improvements to the core game...you can go back and read what I posted. Better and more expanded gameplay options is what I want...and we have, in fact, argued about that before. But apparently you're too busy posting useless IQ questions to read what I did say instead of reacting to falsehoods.

As a data point, I lie on *both* sides of the 'not particularly interested in a graphics update' crowd. My computer sucks, and I already have to play on either the lowest or second lowest settings depending on situation - and you can just forget about zombie/rikti zone events or (god forbid) a mothership or hami raid. So, one reason that a graphics update would be meaningless to me is that I literally wouldn't be able to see it.

But as well, I just don't really care - the game already looks good enough to me. Even playing on the low settings that I do now doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the game. I've seen what the game looks like on higher settings a couple of times (I am officially jealous of my brother's new computer, by the way... ), and it's certainly pretty, but in the long run, it's still the same game - just in prettier packaging. Would I *mind* having better graphics? Of course not. But do I really care either way? No.

On the other hand, power customization is something that definitely *would* increase my enjoyment of the game, especially if it includes animation swapping. For me, overall graphical detail of the game world doesn't really affect the feeling of immersion very much, but the specific actions of my character certainly do. I would feel much more comfortable about the buzzsaw killing machine that is my claws stalker, for example, if I could swap out the clunky eviscerate animation for something more fluid and in keeping with (imo) the feel of the rest of the set. Similarly, my MA/SR would really love to swap out a few of her kicks for punches - the current set just doesn't feel right for a character whose backstory is essentially that of a self-trained fighter. My electric/energy blaster would love to have blue energy attacks to go with her electric blasts, etc, etc.

I understand your POV and situation. Sometimes cash sense comes first and you're not that hung up on graphics anyway.

I'm not opposed to customization...I know that there are people who have trouble getting the exact concept for their characters even with the large number of options we have. It's like that with a few of my own toons.

It's just a lower priority for me since I value the gameplay side of the game a bit more...but there is nothing inherently wrong with PC and the additional options it may bring for us in the character creator.

Power Customization and a Graphical Upgrade to the engine ARE NOT mutually exclusive. They would NOT be handled by the same people.

Let's have our cake and eat it too.

As others have said already, I'd like to see customization in a few ways...

1.) Hue color changes
2.) Animation changes
3.) Emanation point changes

As far as graphics go...I haven't been able to play on High settings (on a medium/large sized team after a period of time) since whatever Issue had mayhem missions in them...after that issue I've been playing on low graphic settings :/

TBH I don't think this game needs a huge overhaul for graphics...when I do switch back to High (and not even everything is on high/very high) it looks beautiful...

What I think/would "love" to see happen is to have more maps/map textures in this game....it's sad when you enter a mission and are like, "okay follow me, I know this map and the boss is here." Lots of new maps/map textures as well as the ability to customize maps/textures somehow in the MA would be great!

Item 2 would have to be part of item 3; after all, what's the point of, say, assuming the pose for the Energy Blast's Snipe (legs braced, right arm extended and braced with left arm, sighting down arm) if the beam is going to come out of your chest (which in that pose isn't aligned with your target)? If the emanation point changes, the animation will almost certainly have to change as well. The reverse isn't true, though. So if it were to happen, I expect you'd have a choice of emanation points, then for each emanation point you'd have one or more animation options, the same way that you pick a costume part and then get one or more style options.

I think the most you would see is hue shifting and emanation points. (And I seriously doubt the last one)

I don't really see them bringing us what some folks see as the holy grail:
being able to customization animation and effects (+DMG, +stun etc)

so for me I really don't see hue shifting as that many more additional options.

I'm doubtful on this one myself. I think being able to add specific damage types and effects to powers would present a nasty balance issue for the game...and that's shaky enough in some areas as is.

This should be sole focus of a whole issue, mission revitalization.
Sure we get fancy new power looks, but then we get to use them to fight Hellions in the same warehouse that we'll be fighting Malta in, 50 levels later. We've seen some additional maps with the Rikti and Cimerora releases, but the general maps really need some new life breathed into them.

I have high hopes for Going Rogue, and it appears that both power customization and graphics improvements are part of it,crossing my fingers that map love is included also.

Oh yeah they would. Hue shifting involves both a lot of artwork...work (art work?) and some engine work on top of that.

Why not do both at once? 'cause it'd take a helluva lot of extra work.

After 3 years in CoX, I finally got to run the Eden Trial the other night.

AWE. SOME. MAPS. AWESOME.

Those are some of the coolest maps in the whole shebang. Its like jumping down a snake-hole, x 1000! You actually jump down a ginormous hole and you have no idea what you'll see when you get there. You get there and behold! A bunch of stuff you've never seen before.

That happens way too infrequently in this game[s].

We really, really, really, really need some new maps in the non-TF game; becasue that office-map, sometimes I think I'm going to go postal just from sheer boredom if I see that thing one more time.

Not really going to go into the rest of it, because this I agree with and is what I'm saying. I happen to not trust ANYBODY to make the graphics "better" without throwing out the game's style and replacing it with the Unreal 3 engine like every [censored] game these days seems to be made, that is all. Looking at the competition, their graphics are only better insofar as they have more detail and better technology. But when it comes to actually LOOKING better, they fail. At least, to my eyes.

I'm not saying that'll happen here if we get any "graphical updates," but I'm very unconvinced that it could be any other way.

First, while power customization would be nice to have, it isn't something I'm screaming for. Yes, there are toons I have that would *really* benefit from it.

Take Hasten, for example. I slot virtually all of my toons with it. For Blasters, it *really* works well with Defiance by speeding up your attack chain, and increasing your damage bonus. Problem is, the animation for it isn't suitable to every attack type. Hasten looks like fiery fists. On an energy, psychic, electrical, ice, or archery blaster, that's significantly out of place. But I'm not willing to give up the damage bonus due to a lame animation choice. Power customization would be very nice in this case.

Also, for my tanks, toning down the animations on Invulnerability would be really nice. In all honesty, as a personal preference, glowy auras don't impress me much, especially on an Invulnerabe tank. I'd like to just have them be as plain-Jane as possible. Instead, I get some guy running around who's as glowy as possible. I much prefer the Willpower animations. Which, amazingly, is why I tend to use that set exclusively these days. A shame really, since Invulnerability isn't a bad set.

For Dark characters, one thing that has always irked me is that you go through all the effort to design a fantastic costume, and then, at a certain level, every character in that set looks identical because the powers completely obscure the character. I'd like to be able to fix that through customization. One of the strengths of this game is that no two characters need look alike. It has always struck me as odd that certain powers seem to want to defeat that goal.

As far as a DirectX upgrade is concerned, here's my two cents, based on my limited experience. This game is approaching six or seven years of age (including the beta time). That's a lot of code based on OpenGL. Rewriting the engine to support DirectX would take a signficiant development effort, and cost a lot of money. However, having said that, DirectX should perform a lot better. I don't think it would be anywhere near as memory intensive, and it would provide better frame rates and support for a wider array of graphics cards.

But that's just my take on it. I would welcome the effort if they told me they've already been working on it, but I'm not sure it needs to be done. We've endured OpenGL for a long time now (and I've always thought it was a poor choice), and it's always gotten the job done--just not as well as it could have.

I don't know what Open GL is. BUT, I get this STUPID Open GL error all the [censored] time and it disconnects me from the game. And then I just don't bother logging back in for weeks at a time.

Really, That ERROR is probably going to make me quit playing in the long run.

I have already had a bazillion discussions with their Tech team... and short of rebuilding my computer with sh*ttier parts... Nothings seems to fix it. And Microsoft patch didnt fix it for me.

Whatever this OPEN GL thing is, I hope they BURN it.
