Let me throw out some phrases I have heard.

1. lvl 50 dom trying to find mercy( this was said in cap)
2. I wonder what these powers look like when I use them (said by a lvl 47 dom)
3 How do I train up(said by a lvl 43 tank in pi who was cl 1)
4 Why am I not getting xp anymore (said by a lvl 50 defender on the third respec)

Want to know the fun part about this. Scroll down a little more.

1. Said during the time of egg babies
2. mole machines on double xp ftw!
3. New player who got on a dreck farm in pi
4. wl newbie

I literally can recall thousands of these if I sat and thought about it. Its not that ma brought or even made this kinda of player, it just made it easier for people to focus on them. There will be pled noobs in this game til the day it dies, there is really nothing to ever be done about it. The best you can do is try to lead them to good info and hope they learn and stay. The more people who play this game the better it is for everyone, to pass judgement or to be mean to them because you don't approve of hiow the play is bad for the game. Which in turn is bad for us all. This game is not as strong as it once was, now is the time to be even nicer to new players more than ever. Without them the future is very bleak.

Duel me.
I will work on my sig pic more when I have time.

What makes me cry is people being so jaded that they can't answer questions for people who don't sit at a computer playing a game for as long as they do.

Do not assume anything of anyone you are exposed to in game. If you're annoyed because it is your opinion everyone should know the answer to their question....simply say you don't know either and leave it at that.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with you. I myself try to be nice and helpful to folks whenever I can - even if the questions they're asking seem obvious to me.

But.

That's fine if the person is asking questions. That indicates they don't know but are trying to learn.

There's a lot of people who don't know stuff, and yet believe - or act as if - they know everything. Or know better. That's another kind of arrogance.

I once ran into a tank who didn't have their mez protection at level 35-40 or so. During the mission, he was mezzed and took heavy damage a few times. When I tried to politely point out the problem, he said that I was a n00b - that toggle wasn't necessary and a waste of endurance. He insisted he was doing fine.

Well, yeah...because I had him targeted and was spamming Increase Density and Transfusion to keep him upright. When I pointed out I was putting a mezbreaker power on him, all I got was insults for my trouble (heck, he even complained a couple of times when I forgot to recast ID - it's got a short timer). It's kinda hard not to be irritated at that point, y'know?

I remember solo-ing my Grav/FF Troller until, IIRC somewhere in the teens b/c I didn't want to team with other folks until I was confident that I knew what the F I was doing. Consequently, I didn't really know much, because teaming was a whole 'nother ballgame.... Using KB to save your butt isn't as helpful on a team, for one.

But, it saddens me that so many folks are compelled to only reach high enough to get the "low hanging fruit" (i.e. quick levels in MA). *sigh*

What makes me cry is people who get all snarky because someone who who don't hand lazy n00bs answers to the most simple questions on a silver platter rather than expecting them to put forth the minimal effort required to learn to play the game themselves. It doesn't require "sitting at a computer playing a game" all day. It requires some basic problem-solving skills. VERY basic. In a lot of cases, the game gives you answers to questions like these in tutorials and such, but lazy n00bs can't be bothered to read.

If it's jaded to expect people to use the brain in their heads for more than just padding between their ears, then I'm jaded as hell and proud of it.

Not a problem, generally. A lot of people are just getting a little ticked off at the newbie 50s that don't know what they're doing, but that shouldn't be you. While a lot has changed since you've been gone, you've also forgotten some basic stuff.

For me, it would all depend on how you asked the question.

For instance, this:

"How u get frum kr to pi?"

would get a lot different reaction that this:

"Hey, I've been gone for four years, and forgot where I need to go to get to PI from KR. Any help would be appreciated."

It lets us know why you're asking a fairly basic question, and does it in a way that doesn't make you look stupid.

Well for me it's not about what is being asked, it's more how the person doing the asking has been presenting himself.

I don't think twice about answering a question unless the person asking has been acting like a jerk to begin with.

Depends on the question for me. If you're playing one of the epic ATs (hero or villain side) and you're asking about basic game mechanics that you should really have figured out by the time you got one character to level 50 ( "What's an enhancement?" (Excepting ED type questions from returning players of course), "How do I get to steel canyon?", etc ) my willingness to answer said individual is almost 0. Play the freaking game!! No sympathy for power levelers (ebay account purchasers) who jump right to the end and expect everyone else to fill in the details.

It's totally a different story if it's an actual new player though.

Exactly. I've made more than my fair share of n00b mistakes way back when, so I TRY to be forgiving. A lot of it, though, depends on how the question's being asked or the conditions it's being asked under.

FWIW, I don't usually remember to look at badges or vet rewards stuff - I go by how they handle themselves in conversation, like the time I was running through Steel Canyon and I get a tell asking, "how do i get to pergrine island?"

I checked to see who'd asked (and found it was a fairly low level character, 16 or 17 or so), and replied, "Through the ferry in Talos, but be careful - you'll get smacked around at that level."

I get back...

"oh"

*pause*

"cuz thats where my mom usually plays and I like fighting Carnies"

Sure enough, kid on his/her parent's account. I sent back:

"*laughing* You'd need to do some serious levelling to handle PI... get to about 30 and try Founders' Falls - you can get Carnie missions there."

S/he thanked me politely and promptly ran off to the Green Line tram. No idea what happened after that, but I tried.

If people asking questions you perceive as simple is an annoyance you're one of two things:

* Jaded. You've played this game for waaayy to long. Time for a new way to pass your free time.
* You're mean, plain and simple.

[/ QUOTE ]

I would like to add a third option. In a way, its sort of a compliment.

you could also have a higher expectation of the common sense and intelligence of your fellow players.

I get annoyed driving to work every day because half the people on the road fail to meet my expectations of their intelligence and common sense. That doesn't mean that I'm jaded or mean. It just means that I expect people to use their brains for more than just autonomic functions.

Of course. There are simple but legitimate questions that aren't adequately explained by the game itself or ones that the answer to is not nearly impossible to not stumble upon by accident over the course of normal gameplay. "How does ED work" is one of them. "How do I get out of Pocket D" is not one of them.

There's a poster that's been fairly prolific on starting threads this morning that's asking a lot of the latter kind of question...

Yes, it is extremely ridiculous.
I seriously think that since the PL'ing exploits became available there was a massive influx from a certain other MMORPG where the players don't behave as politely and are nowhere near as friendly as the average CoX player of old.
I have a feeling that this new crowd came because they don't think you can "really" play an MMORPG until you hit level 50.

Those of us that have been here for a while know that is not the case with CoX.
If you rush to level 50 in CoX, you missed the "playing" of the game.
CoX is about exploring the game environment as you progress.

Once you are level 50, pretty much everywhere except for the MA and the highest level zones aren't a challenge or worth taking the time to explore.

I can only hope that once they get to level 50 they take the time to make a new character and really play the game.

For any of you new players reading this. Here are somethings that I really think that you should do ::
<ul type="square">[*]Run the training/tutorial mission - read everything in it. This will help you out a whole lot. (Sure you might know a lot about another MMORPG, but you don't know the basics of CoX)[*]I strongly suggest running some missions with your contacts before you do anything else.[*] If you team up early on, do it with a team that is your level.[*]Around the time you hit level 10 and before level 17, go to the university in Steel Canyon and run the University arc to learn about IO's.[*]Before you start selling stuff on the market, talk to the Market Rep and read the info about the Market.[*]If you have questions, use the [Help] channel by typing /hc [message]. I know that's the first place I will send you if you are asking about information that is in the tutorial/training area.[/list]
[/ QUOTE ]

I'd like to add on there, "Avoid the Sewers until you've done missions from your contacts."

The sewers are the gateway drug to MA PLing hehe.

[/ QUOTE ]

Okay first allow me to disagree on the sewers. While I DO agree a brand new player should run some missions in AP or Galaxy to get a feel for the game .. running the sewers in no way automatically leads to constant PLing. It's another methood of teaming and a fast way to find yourself at level 5, 6 or even higher. Then off to KR to run radios and get your Raptor Pack. I frequently use the sewers to get a few powers and levels under my belt and have NO desire to sit in the AE building, or PI before it existed, and run the same mission over and over and over again.

Now to add to the advice:

Find an use the global channels to hook up with team mates your own level and run missions. While soloing is quite possible the game is designed for team work and you can level faster on a team. some good ones include: (Oh all of these are on Virtue BTW but similar ones exits on most servers)

virtuebadges09- If you like bright shiny things this channel broadcasts everything from Task Forces that are forming, players with a badge mission looking for team mates, to FARMS going after a particular villain group to earn an accolade.

Virtue LFG Alpha - a channel devoted to helping players find other players (their level) to team with. Also gets plenty of posts for TFs, Trials, and badges

Virtue TF - devoted almost exclusively to the forming of all the various Task Forces

Virtue Monster - a channel devoted to forming teams to take on the various Giant Monsters in zones such as Kraken (Perez Park), Babbage (Boomtown or Skyway when he spawns during a Synase TF), Lusca (IP), Etc

Have a question and no one seems to have the answer? as unusual as this is check out Paragon Wiki at

http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page

It's a public web site devoted to providing information on just about all aspects of the game.

When all else fails ... ASK in broadcast. Its a very freindly community here for the most part and in almost every case you will get one or more replies telling you exactly what you need to know.

Have fun Be safe.. and for goodness sake get out of that AE building every so often and enjoy the game.

I find it interesting that no one has commented on this post. Is it out of everyone's comfort zone because it doesn't fit neatly into the PL or farmer categories?

It certainly gave me pause. Honestly, I never considered the possibility... and it bothers me that one of my wisecracks or nasty retorts could have possibly landed on someone who has a learning disability.

Even more so now that leveling pacts can be made.

As a 5 year vet who only really goes to Pocket D during the special events, I am still constantly confused as how to get out. (And have, more than once, depended on my base transporter, to end my frustration.) And I NEVER remember how to get to Crey's.

While I have a dozen or so level 50 heroes, my highest villians are 46 and 35, I think, but I rarely play them. They have NEVER been PL'ed, but when I do break them out (and all my villians, which I even keep on a seperate server than my heroes), I CONSTANTLY have to relearn how to use their powers. (I do however tell those teaming with me that I'm very rusty, so that they're warned in advance.)

Don't get me wrong. My intent isn't to defend PL'ers. But I don't think we should always rush to judgment when someone doesn't seem to be playing "up to speed" the way we think they should.

I have 9 level 50s and have only had this account almost 4 months. I just found out last night that I can put in "%Chance for x" IOs into auto powers... Using this as logic I've put together a list of known facts gathered from all the threads on the forums:

<ul type="square"> [*] I'm a noob. [*] I shouldn't be allowed to have a level 50. [*] MA ruined the game. [*] I'm the kind of person who complains that pvp sucks just because I can't win. [*] I 2shot Assasin's Strike everyone in low level PvP zones and boast my PvP skills to the point of 3lit3-ness. [*] I have a 2nd account that farms PvP badges in Bloody Bay using what some ppl call an exploit and what some ppl say is PvP. [*] RMT are ruining the game with spam emails! But yet... I still reply back to them with expletives in a reply email each time. [*] I think PvP zones shouldn't have badges because I can never get them without getting ganked by a stalker. [*] I cry in PvP zones when I get killed.[*] I get petitioned for trying to cyber in local in Pocket D during an open RP session. I don't know why. I thought that was the whole point of rolling a female character.[*] I hold costume contests and pick the most [censored] up costumes.[*] When I lose a costume contest, I accuse it of being rigged and say the winners have [censored] ugly costumes. Then I report them for copyright/trademark infringements.[*] Finally... I PLed a level pacted account from 1-47 in less then 24 hours... Yesterday...

"Waaaah! It took me 6 months to get a 50!"

"Yeaaaa... Let me take back what I just said and say this...
"24 hours, [censored]! And I've been playing less then 4 months!"[/list]
The end. By the way... Ranting is against the Forum Rules. It's stickied at the top of every forum. Did you miss that? What? You didn't know it was against the rules? Oh... You must have skipped over the rules of the forum by accident. It's okay. I forgive you. I rant anyway, too. Don't visit Pinnacle forums. It's nothing but drama.

What makes you think that the person being mentioned in that post is a farmer or a PL'er?

I know I didn't get that impression from the post. What I got was that the poster in question has a friend with a learning disability that is actually trying to play the game but needs regular help to do things.

That has nothing to do with powerleveling or farming.

I'm willing to bet that the person in question doesn't act like a jerk when she's playing. She may even be shy about asking for help.
