Why on Earth is there an "Earn XP" option?

Maybe I'm hallucinating, but I swear I saw an option for "Earn XP" as if someone would want to turn it off.

Why would you want to turn off advancement?

Do you get any bonus influence like when you're exemplared?

Is it just for people to tweak out a level xx build for running yy TF?

Because people asked for it.

Some people don't like to outlevel content, like storyarcs or badge missions. The option to turn off XP gain was introduced when Patrol XP was, since outleveling content is even more of concern with that.

This. Content is a large part of the game for people. When the Devs created a way to go past more and more content quicker, it was added so that people who didn't want to do that could limit themselves to not do so.

It gives no bonus, other than the extra content completed.

So you can run thru all the content you want in any given lvl range.

Not out-leveling content is one reason. Wanting to stay at a certain level to earn some more influence is another. (This is the one reason I used it for a short time . . . I didn't want to outlevel my enhancements and didn't have the infl to buy a new set, as that was my first character on a new server and I didn't have time to play the market.)

The main reason I see folks using this is to keep a character at level 46 to power-level lowbies.

I don't use it much but did come in handy when my Fire/fire blaster emerged from the sewers a 9 level I shut off XP until I had a safeguard so I could get my Raptor pack then turned it right back on.

The reason for this, as explained, was to make it easier to get through content or get badges. I love badges but was never quite this fanatical however back before Ouroborus I knew badgers that died on purpose so they could stay at the debt cap and level slower while trying to coax the badge mission out of a contact. It exists for things like that. Make sense?

Most convenient way to complete story arc etc without outleveling contacts. It most certainly beats purposely having to die to earn enough debt to slow leveling down, which used to be the only way. It's a QOL thing and took way too long to be implemented imho.

You can also use that feature to stay the same level as somebody you like to play with. Leveling pact certainly makes this easier, but that's limited to only 2 people, and you can't create pacts at higher levels.

I am keeping a scrapper at 23 so I can test my AE arcs at that lvl. Besides, not every hero needs to be able to fight Recluse and his groupies.

Enjoy your day please.

I know my husband and I do this, most of our alts were created before the level pact option.

OH! I also want to add this..

Sometimes people want to make a little extra money before they outlevel their enhancements and have to buy more.

The only time I've used this is for a Force Fielder that I built during the "serious drought of Pool Cs below level 50" problem. (Which many people outside the Market Forum may not have known existed. ) I locked my XP down at 33 and generated about 30 task force recipes at that level. Doing my part, etc.

Of course I have two level 50 force field defenders, so this might fall into the "I have too much time in the game" category.

I'm using the "XP Disabled" option right now, mostly because I don't want to hit 50 before my partner and he's a few levels lower.

Other people use it so they don't outlevel certain arcs that they really like, or zones they need to do all the content in to unlock a TF contact, like Croatoa or Striga.

I turn it on during double XP weekend. I love leveling my characters, but once I ding 50, they're just high powered dust collectors. I don't want to rush the journey any more than I have to. By turning off XP during double xp weekend, it allows me to keep playing instead of having to go outside, or read a book, or interact with real life people.

Nowadays, I think levels come too easily as it is. They're giving them out as prizes in cereal boxes now. At the end of the journey to 50, the sense of accomplishment has diminished considerably from what it used to be (for me anyway). Most see this as a good thing. I see it as early retirement for some of my favorite characters.

I have a blaster in Croatoa right now with XP disabled so she can unlock the Katie Hannon TF and do *all* the Croatoa content. She's still getting those Arcane salvage drops as a bonus!

Along with what people have mentioned, some content in the game is unlockable and extremely easy to outlevel thanks to patrol XP.

Doc Buzzsaw, who requires the "Bling" badge, is a perfect example. You need to get the badge before level 29 to do those missions, and may need to slow your levelling down so that you can get enough infamy to qualify.

There are similar issues with the Transcendence Trial, Ernesto Hess, and Katie Hannon. You need to complete a specific contact's missions to unlock the TF, but can easily outlevel the contact and miss the chance to get them.

Ouroboros makes it possible to go back and take another shot at them, but this gives people another way to do it.

Forgot to mention, I also have a low-level toon with xp turned off to run sewer teams. it's a great way to recruit for your SG.

Just a footnote to EDB's post: "Turn off XP" can be used to get unlockable Contacts while still usable during regular play, but all the Villainside Unlockable Contacts have no filler/non-Arc missions. So, unless you simply have to do their content in regular play; I'd just leave them for Flashback running later. You won't miss a bit of their content if you do them through Orobouros.

Just thought I'd mention it. I'm not sure about Heroside unlockables, but then Paragon didn't really have much 'unlockable' content before CoV. (and I said 'much' not 'none'; I'm not arguing that there has been 'some' all along)

Another potential reason: You don't want to outlevel a Mayhem or Safeguard Mission before you get the rewards associated with it. The main one I'm thinking of here is the jetpack and jump pack, but I have a friend who's asked me to help him collect the badges. I have a character in the range, but it's possible I could outlevel the Safeguard doing the Police Band missions to get it. So I can just turn off XP right before I level to keep that from happening.

I actually had this happen with one of my characters and had to switch to another. I'd forgotten about the Earn XP option, and only realized after the fact that I could have used it. As for the jump pack and jetpack, I've leveled to the teens so fast that I really had to be careful not to miss them. I can see turning off XP so you can finish one more Police Band mission without levelling.

I used it on two occasions;

1) to lock a character at 33 for a while, and accumulate enough Pool D drops at that level for ghis planned build
2) to stop a green conning outleveled arc from becoming a grey conning outlevelled arc, by avoiding a level up until it was finished.

#1 was for a period of several weeks
#2 was for not even a full play session

Get a character lvl 7-10 and turn off xp. Then enter AE, for the tickets.
Bronze rolls on 10-14 to get Steadfast KB prot and Karma KB Protects. Now you futer Fire armor Tanks, Brutes, and Scrappers can have KB protect at level 7. Or any AT with Combat Jump at lvl 7+ can have KB Protect.

I used it to lock my 49.9-level character until friends could get online and join me for hitting 50 on a Statesman Task Force. I was excited about playing the character and wanted to keep playing even though my friends weren't yet available. Turning off exp let me have the best of both worlds; got to keep playing and earning cash, then got to ding 50 on the Task Force final fight.

Very nice. I've only hit 50 with one character so far, and it was a momentous occasion. I didn't know about the XP option, but I managed to time it just right so that my ding was the direct result of a fulcrum shifted damage capped nova. I want all my 50th dings to be that awesome, but I doubt anything can live up to that.
