Why on Earth is there an "Earn XP" option?

Because people asked for it.

Some people don't like to outlevel content, like storyarcs or badge missions.

[/ QUOTE ]

This. Content is a large part of the game for people. When the Devs created a way to go past more and more content quicker, it was added so that people who didn't want to do that could limit themselves to not do so.

It gives no bonus, other than the extra content completed...

... unless you count the Merits you're rewarded for all of the arcs you're able to complete with XP turned off.

And I can't believe this hasn't been stated yet, but this option was also widely used to create perma-bridges for PL farms in Peregrine and Grandville, but that was before the MA was introduced. Now no one cares about those perma 46s since MA can auto SK everyone.

I can't believe it either. Mostly because Local Man covered it in the 4th reply.

Ah. Sorry, missed that last line.

But I really don't see it being used that way any more as he implied. Most PLers are in MA now. No travel worries. Tons of farms to choose from (if you can sort through all those pesky story driven arcs ). And no worry about needing bridges.

If there are still perma-46s I doubt they're getting paid for their services any more.

Yeah, the devs say they hate PLing/farming but they sure do make it easy to do.

I turn XP off on my brute for most of the week, turn it back on when I play on Monday nights. I team with my friends, and we are all leveling together, but I still want to do some other arcs, get contacts, etc ..

I've done it to avoid out-levelling Marshall Brass before I got to his second story arc. Yes, I've dropped Oro Portals at the BM for other people if they ask, but personally I like to earn the power and Echo Down The Aeons is the only pre-40 redside mission that gives it.

And it's one of the koolest story arcs in the game.

Way back in the early days players would go into perma debt to slow their leveling. That was blunted some when the devs reduced the debt cap at the same time they bumped introduction of debt from Level 5 to Level 10.

Before that the devs were kind enough to direct Level 5 characters to the newly opened Hollows so everone could hit the debt cap immediately.

I turn off XP to finish out my contacts so I don't outlevel them, but I only do it before I reach the next level. For example, I don't turn it off as soon as I reach the last bubble before I ding from level 9 to level 10. Since I would lose my level 5-9 contacts if I reached level 10, I don't want to do that.

By staying in that time frame, I get a little bit more influence and drops. Granted they are big time at that level, but every little bit helps. Another thing I do is the radio/paper missions and the bank missions to get introduced to all the contacts from my Detective/Broker.

Another thing I do is AE missions to get tickets. I cash in the tickets for level 12 enhancements for my level 9 character. I didn't have to spend any INF on the enhancements, any I get via regular missions I can sell.

This may not work for everyone, but it works for me. As I run higher level characters, I switch to DO or SO enhancements. Haven't really swapped to IO lately, but just started this process in the last month or so.

I really love this turn off XP feature. I have to check on one toon that I just thought of. Because of radio missions and bank mission in the level 20 -29 period (not sure right off hand), I had some computer connection difficulty and I am not sure if I outleveled a certain bank mission before I got the exploration badge.

You're right, it's just stupid. We should take it out entirely so that people can't earn XP at all.

So I can team with higher level Sgmates and not outlevel the content I was working on for fun and merits.

I turn XP off to:
<ul type="square">[*]avoid outleveling contacts[*]avoid outleveling story arcs[*]get recipe drops at the "right" level for those builds that are just a touch OCD[*]avoid outleveling enhancements mid-mission (pre-IOs)[*]to fill up contacts' relationship bars completely[/list]and other reasons besides. It's a nice addition in my opinion.

I use it atm on villains so I can run all contacts (hidden and not) as I level at a different difficulty than 1, solo, on my stalker. Certain level ranges are pretty tough in that regard. Discovering the CoV story that way has been immensely interesting.
Best QoL feature imo in a game with a story.

i'm OCD about doing story arcs and used to get very irritated when i'd out level contacts because xp was going so fast. So now i just lock down my xp until i'm done with my story arcs, do a few radio missions and turn xp back on during my safeguard to ding when i'm ready to move to the next arc range.

I don't use it much but did come in handy when my Fire/fire blaster emerged from the sewers a 9 level I shut off XP until I had a safeguard so I could get my Raptor pack then turned it right back on.

I did this as well

I actually had this happen with one of my characters and had to switch to another. I'd forgotten about the Earn XP option, and only realized after the fact that I could have used it. As for the jump pack and jetpack, I've leveled to the teens so fast that I really had to be careful not to miss them. I can see turning off XP so you can finish one more Police Band mission without levelling.

[/ QUOTE ]

You can always join a safeguard mission in KR at any lvl. The requirement of getting the jetpack is simply not having earned it before. As long as it's the Atlas Park safeguard, you'd still get the jetpack. I forget where the zero-G pack is, but I hate it anyway...

Don't forget the double infl/infamy bonus when XP is turned off.

One other trick I've used it for: maximizing a boost from leveling.

If you have a mission that has a particularly tough EB and you are close to leveling, turn off XP until you are *just* about there - an amount less than the XP from a minion. Turn it on again right before you approach the EB. Defeat one of its minions and BAM! The EB is one relative level lower AND you have the boost of all the large inspirations. Sometimes you can hold off on defeating the minion until a little into the fight (say, if you need the large end insp).

Of course, I did this in a fight against Scirocco...and STILL faceplanted in a horrible fashion. But in theory this works.

This is going to sound incredibly snarky, so bear with me.

Because not everyone thinks you have to hit 50 in the shortest amount of time possible.

Yeah, that's right. You see, this game, instead of saying that max level is when the game gets good and everything before it is filler, says the journey is the most important part of the game.

This was one of my questions.

Is this true?

No. Unless things have changed in the last few weeks, you actually earn less inf/defeat than you do in normal mode.**

Forgive me for sounding defensive here, but I completely understand that the journey is the most important part. Up until inventions, there was essentially nothing to do once you hit 50.

I just couldn't believe that you would want to stop leveling just to get all the content. I love all the content, and I am obsessed with experiencing it all as much as you are, but, that is what altaholicism is for.

Plus, now with Oro, you can get any badges you miss, right?

Actually, no. You earn exactly the same amount of influence/infamy and prestige.

Very nice. I've only hit 50 with one character so far, and it was a momentous occasion. I didn't know about the XP option, but I managed to time it just right so that my ding was the direct result of a fulcrum shifted damage capped nova. I want all my 50th dings to be that awesome, but I doubt anything can live up to that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sounds like an awesome ding. I've got a similar but entirely different story of a 50 ding... Before the option was added to turn off XP, I actually managed to gain just enough XP on my Tanker that I was able to go grab the Undefeated exploration badge to give me the XP to ding 50. I shoulda had the screenshotui on so people could see the "Epic Archetype Unlocked" message, but I didn't think about that at the time.
