It Did Not Exist Before MA

...farming that is.

It's simple. Farming is producing crops for harvest. Before the Mission Architect, players couldn't produce ANYTHING in the game. Thus, farming did not exist.

So, what were they doing? Ranching. They were herding pre-existing cattle into fenced in areas for eventual slaughter. That's right, all they were doing was ranching.

Farming did not exist before the Mission Architect. Now, by the implementation of the Mission Architect system where you can make your own enemy groups, farming now exits.

The developers, with Issue 14, finally created farming. For realz.

Blueside may have been ranching; redside, with its small, scattered spawns and craggy terrain, only allows for herding, alike to the traditional practices of the inhabitants of Jammu and Kashmir.

(Issue 13, with its Day Job rewards and Patrol XP, provided wide-open spaces where rewards could be consistently harvested, allowing for groving as well. By, you know, grovers.)

Sorry, ranching is a subset of farming in general.

Prior to MA we were hunter-gatherers, now we are an agrarian society.

The next logical step is interplanetary space, therefore a Moon Base cannot be far off!

We need some sort of massive world war-like game-wide conflict first. Like maybe a bitter, protracted fight over farming custom enemies or something.

The next logical step would have been the Industrial Revolution, but the devs long ago addressed that by eliminating XP rewards for the mobs who are summoned by CoT and Rikti portals, which eliminated the ability to set up assembly lines to deliver a continuous stream of minions to be defeated.

I would say it is more primal. Before MA it was a hunter-gatherer economy.

Having introduced agriculture, can writing and wall building be far behind?

You bolded the wrong part. "Often" means that a farm without livestock is still a farm. Thus a farm does not require livestock.

Ranching, however, requires livestock.

Also, to whoever said something about herding. Herding is an ASPECT of ranching, a part of the process, not a "competing" method of food production.

Posted

Indeed, before now, we were living off the 'bounty of the land'. Gathering what we could from what came naturally. But now, we have the tools to create our own bounty, to actually 'plant the seeds' of what crop we want, and even share it.

I believe the next step is the formation of a political system and permanent military. From there, we can organize assaults against our neighbors to expand our territory and tribe!

Don't you have to own the land for it to be ranching, while herding implies the animals are wandering over terra communis or terra nullius?

Yes, but the fact remains. You can have something that is technically called a "farm" that contiains nothing but livestock. Many people might call that ranching, but it would not be wrong to call it simply farming.

Essentially there is no requirement to grow crops to have a farm, just to perform any of the the activites that fall under the rather large umbrella of things that are considered "farming".

If you are to pull up the search section of the USDA website and put in the phrase " livestock farming " you will get over 350 results.

If livestock farming is an acceptable term for the USDA, who are we to argue?

And would that make kill-stealing a form of rustling? Or the cattle and sheep raids so beloved of almost everyone's ancestors (notably the Celts, but popular the world over).
