Something I miss about the olden days...

I've been here for, well... a while now.

I miss some of the off-topic arguments that used to happen here. The rule has always been no politics, no religion, but often, back in the days of Cuppajo, they would rage for pages and pages and pages. I remember squabbling (quite fiercely) with the likes of Kalimagdalene over whether or not "GLBT Only" SGs were a good idea. I remember arguing about Bush and the Iraq war. I remember having crazy long flamewars with Friggin_Tazer and teasing Miss_Kitty about her stupid stalkers. I remember long, furious threads about religion, the hard-core atheists on one side, the religious on the other and agnostics like myself in the middle.

I remember the wars that blasters and scrappers had on these here forums, about what a scrapper's role on a team was and about whether or not blasters were broken. I remember Dr_Zeus pontificating about the bad manners of certain posters (myself included, at times). I remember Puffy_Shirt posting what was probably the first "DOOOOM!" thread in the beta forums, or at least hearing about it.

I remember circling the wagons with Hephaestus, my fellow fire/fire blaster and holding the angry mobs at bay when we argued, in I2/3, that blasters needed fixing and that range was NOT a blaster's defense. I remember standing shoulder to shoulder with Ohms_ in the blaster forum taking on the likes of AnarchicGorrilla as he attempted to prove with numbers that blasters were over-powered.

There are a lot of things that I remember, that I miss. This is a very, very different place now, some of it for the better, some of it maybe not so much...

What do you miss?

The ED Doom was pretty hilarious, in retrospect.

Costumes seem to get talked about less. Not as many discussions about colors and combinations that worked well.

MAN builds seem to have fallen by the wayside. I miss those.

Oh man. I'd almost forgotten about AnarchicGorrilla's posts in the blaster forum. Ahh, good times.

I miss when the general discussion area was near the top of the page instead of all the way towards the bottom.

Oh man, I remember that "RANGE IS DEFENSE" bull. I think I was like the only scrapper in that thread saying that blasters needed help.

I remember those days as well. Those were some heated discussions in the blaster form. After the blaster buffs, it mellowed out alot.

Sort of...

I can't remember if it was before or after the buffs, but I remember that we got all these Siren's Call Stalker kiddies in there trying to tell us that blasters were WILDLY overpowered, based solely on their experience as a Stalker, CoV-side, Siren's Call fighting ice/NRG blasters at level 30, which is golden time for blasters, and especially so for that build.

It's much more calm in there now... so much so that I never go in there anymore, there's just nothing to argue about anymore.

I miss the days of sarcasm and wagging of the accursed finger of the Mary Poppins cult when a subject isn't neatly tucked in some over flooded section.

I miss when folk would actually comment on the subject matter.

LOL only been on the forums for a few months. Look how many posts I have. .......

Personally, I happen to think that the exile of all hardcore silliness to the Forum Games section was the best thing to happen to these forums. These days, it's not rare that I'll fine multiple interesting threads on the first page, whereas before it was all silliness and maybe one actual thread, if that. Granted, it's still a case of troll/troll/rant/troll/troll/rant/interesting, but I'm hoping that if the mods delete enough farming threads, that will subside.

I've also never been a fan of American politics and religion, though I guess not being either American or religious makes me heavily biassed. Still, I don't mind that the place isn't open to any thread of any topic, because I've seen heavy-traffic public forums where anything goes, and it's not very interesting to participate in. Again, not sharing the same pop culture and culture in general with much of the rest of the posters may have coloured my perception.

One thing I DO miss, however, is that there used to be a time when the rules were applied with thought behind them, not just because the forum rules says so. Sometimes we were allowed to push and bend the rules if it was obvious it was in good spirits and helpful to fostering productive discussion, whereas other times trolls and idiots had their threads pulled for even passing violations of minor rules because they were making a mess of things. In fact, I used to tell people that they shouldn't worry about accidentally infringing on the rules as long as their heart is in the right place and they don't make a giant huge mess of things. Whether that was due to the generally lower severity of moderation or due to personal style (and it's not just Cuppa, as Lighthouse was pretty good about these things, too) I cannot say, but this no longer seems to be the case.

I don't mean to criticise Mod8. Hell, the guy's doing a great job and really holding us all to a high standard, but it's very often that I've seen him take the rules too literally and cut threads that, while they WERE technically violations, weren't actually causing a problem to be on the forum. Sometimes I wish he'd moderate a little less on the letter of the law and more on the spirit of the law. Let people cut loose a little bit if they manage to behave themselves and have an interesting discussion, but don't hesitate to burn them if they devolve into a flame war.

I guess maybe if things calmed down a little bit, we could relax a little, but still... I'm having to watch what I say a lot more these days than I pretty much ever did.

I agree very strongly, except about Lighthouse.

I miss the days when the rules weren't used as a cudgel.

I must say, to a degree I'm HAPPY when a religion/politics thread gets locked for one simple reason... it's the only way the thread will ever end... we're all to stubborn to quit

I think you might have missed most of what was said during that whole debacle (assuming of course, that you're talking about the defiance 2.0 change). The PvP aspect of that whole flamewar was a minor footnote to everything else that was said.

"the reason there are so many sarcastic pvpers is we already had a better version of pvp taken away from us to appease bad players. Back then we chuckled at how bad players came here and whined. If we knew that was the actual voice devs would listen to instead of informed, educated players we probably would have been bigger dicks back then." -ConFlict

which basically boiled down to: "MAI STAUKER NEEDZ BUFFT MOAR NAO!"

and whining with more thought behind it, to give it a veneer of legitimacy
