everyone should have only one character

With Ouroboros, AE, sidekicking, and exempting - you can do everything on one character. Okay, one character per side (red/blue).

Having more than one character takes up server resources and ties up valuable hero names that others cannot take. This is an RPG - and your character is very important. When a new player finds out they can't get the name they want - they quit. You have cost CoX one new player for every alt you have. That's a lot of money for development your selfishness has cost all of us.

And you can only play one character at a time (if you have multiple accounts - one per account). So having more than one is just a waste.

And when you play alts you aren't connected to your main. It is an RPG - you can only have fun from the satisfaction that comes from truly knowing and inhabiting your character. You can't possibly have fun having alts - so why have them (I know, I tried it out and hated it)?

Alts fill up supergroups. The devs have had to waste time making SGs larger so that selfish people could have alts.

And alts make it hard for everyone else to have fun. I see somebody on and make a friend. Later they aren't on. Maybe they are - but on an alt. I don't know. It just looks like my new friend is missing. Alts kills friendships and community - and everyone knows that community is what keeps MMO's alive.

I call upon the devs to solve this problem that is driving away new players, giving existing players ennui and making them quit. Reduce all accounts to 1 character redside and 1 character blueside. Stop selfishness from ruining my game.

Honestly, with CoGoRo coming out, we can switch sides, so having a hero and a villain is needless frippery. We can just switch sides on our 1 character when we want to.

I say let the players at least have the option to play one character per account and one building. I'd like to be that tall one in Steel Canyon. Not the tallest one, but that one that's like, fifth tallest.

Devs please?????

You all do know that some games have pretty much done just that, right? Limited players (or tried) to one character.

I have never really been able to enjoy those games though

AHA! I can disprove this! I've been on WoW for almost two weeks now and they have ZERO community, and yet they are so popular.

My suggestion is to make the community worse! That way we can be as successful as WoW just like every game really wants to be.

[/ QUOTE ]

I thought you were suggesting that everyone should literally share one single character. That would actually make more sense. City of Hero would no longer have name collisions, because there would only be one name. City of Hero would no longer have outlier performance, because by definition everyone would have exactly median performance. And powerset balance becomes largely moot. PL would also become a moot point quickly enough.

The level of discourse on the forums would also significantly improve. No more PvP arguments. No more build arguments. No more "role" arguments. No more powerset proliferation demands. No more "devs hate villains" conspiracy theories (they'd be replaced by "devs hate the only character that exists" theories).

It would start to give the game a bit of a LaMOE feel, and I think the day job badges would become largely out of the question, but that's a small price to pay.

Letting everyone have at least one, much less two characters of their own opens the door to a lot of problems. Its really a half-measure at best.

Yeah, but then every time I logged on, it'd be a witch hunt to figure out who respecced our character out of Torrent again.

I think this is a facinating idea, and I am behind it 100%!

I'd like to reserve "e" as my character.

Vila: Why don't you go?
Avon: You are expendable.
Vila: And you're not?
Avon: No, I am not. I am not expendable, I'm not stupid, and I'm not going.
Gan: I'll get the guns.

That's pretty much my gig right now, so no skin off my nose.

But of course 90% of the player base would like to kick your idea square in the jewels, rightly so.

I disagree vehemently. Playing alts is why I play this game. The ability to buy extra character slots generates income. I’ve paid $60 so far for extra character slots.

As for the naming issue, phooey. They’ve addressed that by weeding out inactive account’s characters under a certain level (5? 35?). It isn’t that hard to get a name, the only name I ever truly wanted is taken up by an NPC. A little creativity goes a long way.

[ QUOTE ]
And you can only play one character at a time (if you have multiple accounts - one per account). So having more than one is just a waste.

[/ QUOTE ]

Bullhockey. Alts extend the life of the game by extending the amount of time a player is subscribed. If I were only allowed one character at a time I would have unsubscribed years ago, instead I’ve been playing since July 2004. Alts are what keep me here and keep me paying.

If we were only allowed one character this game would be a laughingstock. The only game I’ve played in the last eight years that allowed only one character at a time was Puzzle Quest ($10 puzzle computer game, not an MMO). No other MMO does this because they know better.

[/ QUOTE ]

That’s you. I’m me. We’re not clones. Get over it. You pay your $15, I’ll pay mine, so don’t dictate how I play when it falls in line with developer intention.

[ QUOTE ]
Alts fill up supergroups. The devs have had to waste time making SGs larger so that selfish people could have alts.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don’t play in or want to play in an SG full of strangers. Maybe you do. I don’t need 149 other people to clutter up my SG, I populate it with friends and family members. My main SG has 6 current players, only two of us play regularly. I still find teams outside of my SGs any time I want to, I have a well-developed global friend list and am on active global channels.

If that makes me selfish, so be it. That might be why I help other players so much. Doh.

[/ QUOTE ]

Alts make for more adaptive teams. Need a rad for that STF? I’ve got one. A tank for the ITF? Ditto. Scrapper or Blaster for damage? You bet. Controllers, Khelds, Widows. Even a level 4 Soldier. If the team needs a certain role filled, I’ve got it covered for anything. I don’t see how this makes it harder to have fun, the people I want to find me have me on their global list. They can see me wherever I am, Virtue, Pinnacle, Liberty, Infinity. They can also give a shout out in our 10 different global channels. If you can’t, maybe you should work on that friendship thing.

Good luck with that… not!

You’re the first player I’ve ever heard spout this nonsense, perhaps that makes you a minority. Go figure.

The devs know where their bread is buttered and what keeps the money flowing when it comes to this issue. I don’t think you do.

The OP is a genius. The only thing I could suggest that would improve his "one character per side" suggestion would be perma-death--eliminate all hospitals, awaken inspirations and rez powers. That would really get players fully engaged in the health of their characters.

The only game where it even remotely made sense at all (to me) was Final Fantasy XI, where you could quite literally be any of the game's jobs and do whatever you wanted with just one character.

I suppose it also makes a hell of a lot of sense in EVE, for much the same reason (and that you can only train skills on one character per account).

Games with a lot of morphability in role/class/etc. benefit more from having one character to focus on all of that stuff.

...Your standard MMO, though, they ain't. Not typically, anyway. And not saying that this couldn't change, but it'd have to be a very differently built game for the most part.

This game, though? OP's trawling the waters, ain't even worth speculating on. I just hope he's got his burn ointment! Epic trolls beget epic flames, after all.
