Being able to give good criticism has always been one of the most difficult skills for people. Why saying, 'I like this, but here is where I think you could make it better' is so much harder than saying 'J0 sUx' for so many people, I may never know.

Tonight I decided to do a bunch of arcs which hadn't been rated yet. I made sure to rate them, and provide feedback. What was obvious to me was that every one of them was a labor of love for the author. They want people to see their stuff. I told them what I thought, liked, and what I felt would improve their arc.

Then again, there are those who enjoy acting like a jackass.

How do you rate something 0 stars?

So no matter how good a story is any of those powers show up and its a 1.

I like missions that use very difficult stuff provided they state it is high level content and it will be difficult. Nothing like glue arrow at like lvl 15

You do realize that everyone has their own personal tastes, bad tastes and whims.

Your surprised at this? Well the devs shouldnt be.

Now if what I said is true or not about rating like that, it would be 1000% within my rights as a player of missions to rate like this.

I could also say I will rate a 5 and missions where the mobs are clothed in polkadots.

THIS IS EXACTLY whats wrong with letting players control things...

I do realize this.

Just as I realize that there are people in this world who will capriciously punish those who have different tastes and whims. As you stated that you do.

Which was my point.

And this is whats making my point.

Players should NOT, should NEVER have the ability to affect the gameplay experiance of other players like this.

And whatever my rating criteria are. it doesnt matter, its my rating criteria. As long as I dont 1 star or 5 star everyone which the devs have said is a no no, anyhting I want to do is my choice.

I think the rating system in its current state needs to go bye bye badly.

You can rate 0 stars?
So on those occasions that I couldn't complete a mission for whatever reason and I chose to not rate it I have actually given 0 stars? I really really hope that I have misunderstood this.

I also think limiting Dev choice to once per account is a brilliant idea, it was shown on test that having one DC'ed arc greatly increased the chance of you having another, this is surly a much fairer way of doing it? If the Dev's can only give you one DC they'll spend time looking for new authors instead of just playing the same few writers missions.

Out of simply curiousity my question to this is So WHAT? Look I'd love to have more slots and I am sure all of us would but I also realize that if everyone had 10, 15 or whatever amount of story arcs out there the servers couldn't handle the load. Would I love the distiction of having a story as a Dev's choice or in the Hall of Fame? Sure who wouldn't? But in the first day it went live there were already over 10,000 arcs out there and if they handed out Dev's choice and Hall of Fame like candy I honestly think it would lose it's status.

I have three arcs up at the moment and another already waiting in the wings. Mine are all short and at the moment designed to be light hearted and fun (still a challenge but more to make people smile than anything else). Two of those arcs are consistantly hovering at 4 stars .. not the BEST anyone has seen but above 3 which is supposedly mediocre. So apparently my ability to craft a decent story falls into the "Good" but not Fantastic range. Guess what I can live with that and if you watch some of the junk that is on TV these days apparently some poeple can make a good living at that level or lower.

I figure I will leave up stories for a while and then simply unpublish and replace with new ones as my creative urges dictate. As of now I am already considering unpublishing the one that is getting only 3 stars so I can post my new one and leave the two people seem to like up so my friends can enjoy them. Once I unpublish I don't lose any badges or tickets I have earned and if the arc isn't getting high ratings why not replace it with one that might?

If you are right and no one can ever expect to get more than one story into the Dev's choice And they plan to consistantly award 1% of eligible missions that honor then by process of elimination eventually almost anyone that posts has a shot at it. Simply because as more and more writers get that story into Dev's choice no matter how good the next one may be it is out of the running. Frankly that seems unfair to the writer out there with the talent to impress the people that do this for a living.

I am enjoying exploring my creative side and every comment I get that my story was fun to play makes me feel good. If I never make the hall of fame I could care less. LOL I am playing a game and having fun which is the whole idea to begiun with. Relax, enjoy and have a good time.. Life is short Don't spend it worrying about why your story arc isn't in the hall.. play the game and have some fun!

Probably a Nemesis plot to get us to have more than one account.

I've got 3 accounts, so that's 9 MA slots. I have to admit I currently don't have enough ideas to fill that many. (But I've only been thinking about it a couple of weeks after all.)

It's possible that I don't mind pulling down one arc to publish another one. Not likely I'll be losing a lot of ratings. I've got 4 ratings on the one I've got now so that's not a big deal. (4 stars! HoF here I come!)

As I understand it, just exiting doesn't count. You have to click on the star meter first (giving it at least one star), then click the first star (1 star), and then click that star again ("0 stars").

Wow, lotta replies... okay...

If the requirement is actually 4.0001 or above, that's a bit more attainable. That means all 4 and 5 star ratings help you, as opposed to only 5 star ratings helping you. If your work is good, the occasional "it wuz too hards lol" vote may hurt but it won't utterly cripple you. ...can we please get a dev in here to confirm the actual rating? is it 4.01 or 4.5?

Buying another account is not a "solution" to the issue of new slots. It works, but c'mon, another $15 a month? That's like saying a practical solution for street crime is fuel-air explosives. It's overkill and will certainly cost you more than buying new slots would. Look at the cost benefits of buying another account to get character slots vs. buying character slots directly -- ongoing sub versus one time fee. We need a similar model for story slots.

As for "don't be worried why your arc isn't in the hall", honestly I could care less about the badge or even being in the hall of fame. I just want to be able to write more stories without destroying my previous work. I want to be able to have more published things, by whatever means. And my point is that since the ONLY means available to us is HOF, DC, and deleting your work... none of these means are acceptable to me. If you're happy removing your stories from play so you can post others, good for you. I'm not. A lot of folks aren't. (And a lot of folks are, but that doesn't mean the other point of view is instantly negated.)

A thing you can do if you want to publish more than three arcs is to post them somewhere as text files. Admittedly, if you're looking for rewards this doesn't do much for you but if you only want to share your stories with people, it works.

I'd do that, but I don't trust them not to edit it slightly, and repost it saying "Look at this awesome mission I wrote! It's so great! 5-star me." I don't like people stealing my work and claiming they made it, and even if forumites who know me would know it was stolen, the vast majority of the playerbase wouldn't.

I am beginning to think that getting an arc visible enough is going to be a bigger problem than the ratings people will be giving. That is an early observation, though. Hopefully visibility isn't going to be an issue for any arc published.

The way I look at it is this:

The Devs promised us 3 slots each. They make no promisies that I will get more. If I get more, I will thank the players (HoF) or Devs (DC) and write a new arc.

There is basically NOTHING you can do to earn an extra slot as it stands. Writing an awesome story, using the tools cleverly, having a nice reputation, and not having typos all help. But nothing you can do will give you a guarantee.

Players may say they want 'a fighting chance', but what many of them really mean is that they want a guaranteed method of getting another slot. If it alos happens to imply that they are a great writer, hey, that's gravy.

When and if another method of getting slots appears (Vet Rewards, purchase, crafting, whatever), there will suddenly be a slew of haves, and a whole group of have-nots who will immediately say that the new additional criteria is unfair.

"We shouldn't have to pay for everything with money!"
"Now I have to farm for inf!"
"But I hate badging!"
"I have to wait how many months?"
"I earned mine with my writing skill, but Joe Deeppockets/Nolife now has more than me..."

It doesn't matter what the criteria are: they will be unfair.

The only 'fair' thing would be to limit everyone to 3 arcs period forever. And that would suck.

I don't think that limiting it to one per person in the transfer from beta means one per person forever. I just think it means that they wanted to make some hard cuts and be really strict in the transfer, possibly so as to avoid this:

Code:[/color]

WHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGG GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

For FIFTEEN THOUSAND POSTS filling the rest of the boards because fourty people wouldn't shut up after seeing two or three authors with two or three DCs get transfered.

"I think you're confused. This is /b, not /b/."

I highly doubt that there is a hard-and-fast rule delimiting "one Dev Choice per author, no matter what." Maybe during the transfer from Beta to Live, that was the rule, but ...

Is there any logical reason why you would tell a good author with a proven track record that they shouldn't bother contributing any more?

Just think of it: one Dev Choice per author, X number of Dev Choices per month, inevitably means one of two things. Either everybody would get a Dev Choice no matter how bad their arc was, or they'd stop giving them out. Makes no sense.

I strongly suspect that this isn't a rule going forward into Live.

Posted

If the Devs have any sense, and their record suggests that they do have quite a bit of it, they'll be fiddling with the details of the MA rather often. My guess is that'll include Hall of Fame, total MA slots, and the size of MA arcs, mostly due to the fact server space and bandwidth are resources that need to be managed.

Observe first, then change. We're in the observe period.

Yep they are datamining.

HOF is attainable for sure. You might have to spend 20-100 million influence "promoting" your arc, but sure it can be done. Get creative people.

The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.

The devs got accused of favoritism, only looking at proven arcs, unfairness.

And the people with multiple arcs were getting harrased for being the devs pets or kissing tuckus to get there.

I would be shocked if they opened that can of worms again.

The devs must must mantain an air of imparitality, not an air of the only way to get devs choice to personally know one of the devs or be buddies with them.
