It's really like any other MMO activity - Some people are sane and mature, others are not. Some PvPers are INCREDIBLY competitive, to the point of being buttheads. There's buttheads in PvE too (Case in point: I was running a Snake Farm to try to help some friends level and sent a tell to someone who was seeking a team and had Anything ok! listed. I got the response that I was 'ruining the server for RPers'. Hokay.).
PvP isnt dead because of PvPers. In fact PvP isnt dead at all. You could argue its dieing and I would agree, but it has little to nothing to do with "PvPers" and more to do with the new changes to PvP driving the old schoolers out.
Think about it.
There are 2 kinds of people. People that loose and take it as a challenge to better themselves, and people that cant take loosing and rather then try to improve they cry complain and blame others for their shortcomings.
For the first type getting better and one day kicking the crap out of the people that once kicked the crap out of them is what keeps them PvPing. Its a reward in itself. For the other person, they dont give it a chance so rather then try to improve they give up and stick to PvE because PvP just isnt worth it for them. The only thing that would make it worth while is PvP rewards, something that is non existent (nukes and shivs dont count).
If I were to blame anyone for the lack of interest in CoX PvP I would blame the devs for not giving PvErs any real reason to PvP up until now. If they want people that have no interest in PvP to give it a shot, they have to tempt them with something (like the new IOs for example).
This "trash talking killed PvP" myth is stupid. If its really that big of a issue you can turn off enemy chat or ignore the people that annoy you. Ive been doing it for over a year now.

But when people say PvP is dead because of trash talkers, ETC. All I have to say is obviously you're not meant to PvP. I still to this day get ganked and trash talked too.
Only difference is I "LOL' at it, find a way to kill the trash talker and move on. Usually adding a "" right after I kill them. Oh how a smiley can really tick a person.

I'd say the trash talk that goes on in pvp zones has turned many people away from pvp over the years. If cross-faction chat wasn't permitted in the zones, you'd probably have more people fighting.
I don't think it's right to say that anyone who turned away from pvp because of the verbal abuse "obviously wasn't meant to pvp" being that the type of talk that bothers people really is not an integral part of pvp.
Players who might otherwise stick around, learn from their mistakes, and improve, can quickly sour on pvp when their first defeats are followed by harsh insults.
I don't know why any of this is difficult for folks to understand.

theres no way to stop the ppl from trash talking unless devs sit in zones and monitor it like a policeman at a intersection. its not going to happen
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, they could disable cross-faction chat in the pvp zones, presumably, but I agree that will not happen. That would improve the situation dramatically (though it would negative impact fight club).
That all being said, I get a lot of laughs from the broadcast banter, but most of it is just dumb and doesn't add anything of value to the game. I enjoy it but think the game would be better off without it.

and thats yu rright to. me personnaly i can stand the trash tal. i stuck through it for a long time to try and better myself to beat the ones doing it and i am probbly only half better. but i still try to better myself and have gotten alot of respect for it.
But in the same sense i got a rl friend that cant pvp at all because he cant deal with the trash talking. hes just real hot headed. (and i mean use to slam down mouses and keyboards because it got so bad) It really just depends on the person.
Cross faction chatting has to stay. Half the trash talk is rpvp anyways (have you seen those crazy guys from Jupiter in RV lately?).
Sure trash talk is a bummer, but along with the bad is good. Like "Wow, you pwned me, did you have the placate IO in will dom?" Ans, "Yep, works real nice, you almost got me there btw." or "Think of making of X/X like yours, how do you like it?"
However, another good portion of trash talk is: "Wait till I14 comes out and your FoTM fort/tank/sr whatever will be OMG PWNED"
If a well balanced, unbugged PVP system was in place, I think that will cut down on the trash talk a lot.

Your all [censored] gankers!
Open world PvP fails in just about every single MMO out there, even one like Warhammer that was built around the concept.
Instanced PvP with equal number of teammates, mini-games, and rewards is the way to go.
Don't worry, the dev's only took 4 years to figure out PvP could use rewards so the instancing and balanced teams concept is probably just a decade or so away from happening.

I disagree.
Planetside had awesome open world PvP.
Warhammer on the other hand has many other factors for why their open world PvP concept failed. For one, I don't think level based is ever viable to mix with an open world pvp game. Sure they say their concept is based on a open world pvp game, but it isn't. They're core game is based around RvR lakes, very similar to having PvP zones, along with instanced based PvP. They just happen to have PvP servers. Doesn't make it a game focused on open world PvP to me.

Never played Planetside so I'll have to take your word for it.
RvR "Lakes" seems the same as Open WOrld PvP to me. Same as PvP zones in CoH. They stay the same and you come and go as you please.
Between RvR lakes and Scenarios, which one in your opinion was used by a larger percentage of the population.
I know I participated in both but found the Scenarios to be MUCH more enjoyable and much more frequent. Simply starting both sides with equal numbers is a big step towards having balanced gameplay in PvP in my eyes.
I liked Warhammer PvP just like I enjoyed WoW PvP, but that like was limited to the scenarios/battlegrounds.
I just wish CoH would get on that train and get off the one that they are currently on.
I wasn't proposing an open pvp world. Just one common zone that was open, but under a different rule set on engagements.

Sorry, misunderstanding on what you meant by open world pvp.
I never considered "lakes" or zones as open world pvp. I just considered them as unbalanced forms of instanced pvp.
Open world PvP makes me think of UO, or SWG (when I played, pre-nge, pre-cu and during CU) where you went Overt and were simply in PvP mode. PvP servers, Overt status, etc. is what I considered as open world PvP and what I thought you were referring to.

Nothing wrong with the statement, Planetside was simply a MMOFPS. Still counts as an MMO no?
Open World PvP needs to have something to fight over. Like guild cities, bases, etc. Games like WoW and WAR just give open world PvP a bad rep is all I'm saying. Their instanced PvP is much better because their world PvP is pointless or just a boring grind with nothing invested in it for the player.

I agree. To a certain level ... Basically, it comes down to this.
There are different types of people out there. You have people who can laugh at trash talkers (IRL and in game) and people who can't. My statement of "Obviously you weren't meant to PvP if you can't take trash talking" was strictly for zones. If you can't take trash talking and it hurts your feelings that bad. Don't come back, go to arena.
Now as mean as that sounds, it's really not. If you can't take the time to either put that person on ignore or turn off chat, then you are kind of asking for it. As I previously stated, I got chewed up and spit out when I first joined PvP, was trash talked to, ETC. The works. But I have the type of personality that takes that as a challenge and I WILL keep coming back until I beat that person.
Most trash talkers do it to provoke the other person, or they just think it's funny and makes them look tough. /I/ on the other hand, love to strip the other person of that by doing whatever I have to so they'll have no ammo to pick on me with.
Geez, people take the internet too seriously. I get that some people apparently just CAN'T handle reading mean text or like I said, ignoring the other person. (It's really not that hard, I promise.) But phew, don't ruin other people's fun by always complaining!

LOL oh the memories, I played since closed beta and stopped playing the game when they added BFRs. Now I vow to never play another SOE product again.

Right. But feel free to trash talk and ruin other peoples fun. Complaining though....that's simply out of the question, and not acceptable behavior. lol, good stuff.
We all get trash talked in PvP, that doesn't mean we have to like it. Personally I would be fine not being able to read the oppositions broadcasts and would welcome that change. They can send me a tell if they really wanna trash talk me.
Except most times they wont...because now everyone else cant see it, and it doesn't feed their attention [censored] ego driven needs.
I dont care about the trash talking too much, and usually have something else I can log in to counter the trashers current build. This will usually hush them when they get owned a few times.
But trash talkers do go a bit far sometimes in the zone and have definately run off a few peeps I was trying to get interested in PvP. Not all, but more than a handful.
As already stated, some can take it with a grain of salt, while others take it too seriously......or cant take it at all.
I guess its true about teenagers and being left to their own devices....I have seen community appointed members in other games do a fine job of policing this type of behavior. Maybe it could work here? Just a thought....

that pm could go a long way with a newcomer to the zone.
