  1. I agree mac.

    Some things to add.

As far as I know there is no MMO on the market that has yet to have truly successful "open zone" pvp.
Where PvP becomes accessible, balanced and fun is when it is instanced in Battlegrounds or Scenerios.
Same # of people per side. Clear objective to win the scenerio. Battling other players over said objective. Rewards worth having at the end.

But honestly, this has no chance to sway Developer whim.

Look at what we currently have. Who on the Dev team has prior PvP heavy experience when it comes to development? Which one of them has PvP'd in this game to any extent.

(I do not count stepping in to a zone and fighting a few people once a month as PvPing to any extent. More of a side diversion.)

In my view the Dev team is trying to recreate the wheel when it comes to PvP. Might be great if it succeeds but the chances of that are so slim as to be near non-existant. Add that to being out of touch with the playerbase they are trying to change the game for and that doesn't seem to be the recipe for success.

(I also don't count talking to a select few people who play the game as being "in touch with the playerbase." That's just talking to your friends.)
  2. My guess it is tied to the code that makes a mob run if they cannot hit you after a few attacks.
Add in a possible problem with critter recharge and the mob attacks once, doesn't cycle to the next attack mode and therefore can't hit you, decides it's time to flee.

    My scientific wild #$% guess.

I updated this recently and took some of the allies out. Forgot to update the description in this thread.

Mission 1: I had some issues with this mission. The map doesn't fit the story. I think a regular office map would have been fine. Why are there workers in a flooded moldy office? The custom group was OK, not scary, as they seem to be portrayed. Also, after I rescued the hostage, it said the boss would be blocking the door. He wasn't, I had to search all over for him.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The map choice is one I've been on the fence about for a while now. I like the oppressive atmosphere but it's a bit too large and the "green" all over doesn't jive too well.
I'm still waiting for an enemy group in CoX to be "scary". Not the easiest thing to pull off in this genre. I was actually trying for mildly creepy.
The boss blocking the door is a spawn point issue. Choose "Front" and mob spawns in "Middle" or "Back", etc... it's been giving me fits lately.

Mission 2: Just wasn't working for me. Seth was nowhere to be found.

Running on difficulty level 4-5 into a mission which you have been told there are AVs..... what exactly did you expect?
It's partly my fault I'll admit for forgetting to update the description about removing some allies but I detest arcs where the NPC allies do the real fighting and the player is there just to watch.

    [ QUOTE ]

    because I couldn't find a helper,

    [/ QUOTE ]
My fault. There is a helper for the AV at the end but not for Malaise. I'm thinking maybe I need to replace Malaise with a lower difficulty "Malaise".

    [ QUOTE ]

plus what was he even doing there?

    [/ QUOTE ]
Perhaps I need to flesh out this part. I thought there was enough in the story already in order for the player to figure out what is happening but maybe I need to convey it better.

    [ QUOTE ]

I hate to do it, but I gotta rate it 3 stars. You have the basis of an interesting story, but it needs work.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Thanks for the review. I'm still looking for another map for the first mission and hopefully the spawn points will get fully ironed out.

My advice to you, turn your difficulty down to Heroic. If you happen to run across AVs they will be EBs and a slightly overpowered custom critter is much easier to deal with on a lower difficulty setting. Running into a EM/Nin custom critter on Heroic is painful...on Invincible it's instadeath.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I see where you are coming from. If you do some updating, send me a PM and I will re-run it on lvl 2 (I really hate running on heroic) and re-rate based on the update. I know you guys put a lot of work into these and I'd rather give you a 4 or 5 star rating.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Only if the arc deserves it though.

I see a large update today so hopefully it fixed some issues.

I'm still looking for a replacement map for the first mission and I've decided that without coming right out and stating that Malaise is in the second mission, he is a bit too much of a "surprise". I think I need to replace him with an EB version that's slightly weaker.

  6. Thank you for the review Talen.

I took what you pointed out to heart. I just spent the last 5 hours working on cutting out some of the things that didn't fit right.
I took the NPC allies out as well. They were just made up on the fly for the arc but you were right, they really didn't seem involved at all. They weren't any of my real toons so no attachment issues to deal with there.
I tried to make the NPC enemies slightly more creepy to help out the vibe as well. I played around with auras and such to try and make them easier to deal with by Controllers and Dominators but in doing so they lost much of the "look" I thought fairly important to them. I decided to keep them as is.

Now if only they could get the spawn location issue ironed out, that one is causing me fits. (pick front and the mob spawns in middle or back, etc...)

Again, thanks for the review. I have been playing the arc to test it and to me it seems to be much cleaner and tighter to what I was going for.

I'd like to take a moment and just congratulate Venture and Talen Lee for taking their time and energy to do this for fellow players.
I hope you don't get swamped under and lose interest. The reviewing you are giving is excellent and I have been seeing the results and watched as good arcs get transformed to very good or great arcs.
My hat off to both of you.

Talen Lee, if possible would you mind reviewing my arc if you get the time and urge. I'd ask Venture but from the looks of it his plate is full and then some.

Last I checked my arc Dark Dreams (which is similiar to Small Fears by Teh_Chameleon) was sitting at 5 plays and 4 stars. I'd like to know if it's the story concept itself that limits it's rating or if it's the execution of the story that needs work.

  14. Axis & Allies the boardgame yeah, Axis & Allies the Arc for a series of missions in CoH....probably not so much. Different medium.
Axis & Allies the computer game...maybe. Probably not worth the effort though.
If we are stuck using names and terms that are not trademarked in some form or another.... we'd be using arc names like "The", "And", "!"... and probably every character in this game would be "Generichero??????".

    New PvP

Me thinks you completely missed the point of what you quoted.

Let's take this "New Guy" who plays a controller.

He's leveled this character up in PvE, holding enemies for 10 or more seconds at a time. He uses his AT's inherent "Containment" to boost his damage while his enemy is held so he can defeat things in a fairly efficient manner.

He steps into a PvP zone and spots an enemy player. He recognizes it as a Corruptor, an AT vulnerable to his control powers.
He targets the Corruptor and lets fly with his single target hold. It hits. He closes in ready to launch a couple attacks counting on containment to help boost his damage.

Suddenly the Corruptor is free and runs off after only a few seconds.

    "Wha!?"

Playing for hours, days, weeks, months or even years with one ruleset then stepping into a zone and have the most basic elements about your character be completely different just doesn't seem like a good idea to me, especially after 4 years.

Now to answer your situation your described.

How would you change the game to control a human being's behavior? Because that's what the problem you describe is.

Blame it on the "PvPers" all you want. They make easy scapegoats.

Still doesn't change the fact that it's not one "type" of player causing problems. It's PEOPLE in general.

The Issue 13 changes did NOTHING to address the real problems PvP in this game has. Why? Because You can't see them on a spreadsheet.

    New PvP

    [ QUOTE ]
OK as I write this I am currently in Siren's. Actually, I am dead on the street in Sirens. It's my first time PvPing under the new rules. Frankly, I like them quite a bit. I particularly like the lack of status protection. But I am confused about dimishing returns. Everyone on the forums gripes about them. But we've currently got this defender and controller in Sirens who are tearing us up. I mean I doubt any of us are experts. I am no expert and am just in there tooling around checking out te new rules. So it could be that these guys are experts. But nonetheless, this defender and controller are owning the zone. So why all the whining and complaining? The New PvP rocks.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Siren's was always one of the better/balanced zones.

Oh, and that Defense you're in love with now because of Elusivity.... it's getting cut by 2/3rds when I14 drops.
  21. [ QUOTE ]
Not to sound like a bucket of cold water, but wasn't there a game called Axis and Allies back in like the 80s? Using said name as a title for your arc might not be a good idea, copyright-wise, much like I can't make a THE INCREDIBLE HULK" toon.

I could be wrong, of course. Perhaps you might PM a dev.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Wonder if the makers of Axis & Allies the boardgame bought the rights to the name from WWII?

I'm pretty sure PW is safe as long as no where in the mission a board pops out with little plastic pieces and a couple of six sided dice.

  23. I played Small Fears again.

Seemed to play much cleaner. My only "huh?" moment was the first mission with the hostages spawning off a trigger to each other. I had cleared and passed the room then had to backtrack and find the last hostage.
The last mission is fun. The ambush when fighting Phobia was brutal but that is what was fun about it.
Phobia is about as perfect as she can be. Great look and perfect powerset match. Just the right difficulty and she moves the "just right" amount. Doesn't stand still and trade punches and doesn't run all over hell's half-acre.

The maps were spot on. The dialogue was good.

I'd recommend this one to friends.

    5 stars from me.

EDIT- Did I kill the thread or something? Also, I wouldn't mind more reviews of my arcs... I think I've gotten all of one for each >.<

And I'm morbidly curious... thus far every person who's tried my second arc, "How to Survive a Robot Uprising", has had a different problem with it. Not mistakes, per se, just balancing stuff, or 'yeah, this didn't really work for me'. And none of them are ever the same! It's starting to make me a bit neurotic >.<

I really enjoyed the arc except for the Malta on the Cargo Ship map. That one just seemed "off" for me and was very deadly.
Perhaps add in a few of your custom robots for flavor. Perhaps an ally as well.

The first mission was a blast. The Ally was perfect. He helped but didn't plow thru the mission killing everything. He really liked to use his secondary and buffed alot. Playing a THugs/Pain MM is was empowering to say the least.

... aaand add yet another 'I liked it, but...' to the pile. Seriously, I've gotten a different opinion from every single person who played this. I'm starting to wonder what's going on >.<

Seriously thinking about rewriting it, at least somewhat (although I am a bit perplexed that the Malta map gave you so much difficulty- they were mostly busy killing each other, they wouldn't bother much with you if you went around).

Ah, well. If anyone wants to add a second review for Small Fears, go ahead- I've revised it fairly extensively since that first one.

    Lol, sorry m'man.
My complaints with that mission is mostly it felt flat or out of place when compared to the others in the arc. I felt it needed some of your custom critters in it. Not many, but a few would liven the place up a bit.
As for that mish being deadly, I'll chalk that one up to my toon and playstyle. Thugs/Pain MM that stealths with the same ability as a bulldozer rampaging thru a bell factory.

    Dumok I thought you quit.

I did. Went to Warhammer to get my PvP fix. Played Fallout 3 for a bit as well.
Came back to check out the MA.
Also want to see how long Castle can hold his breath by keeping his head up his...(ahem) with his PvP vision.
