Discussion: Matt Miller on Gamezone.com
Actually, some unofficially-spoilered information about I13 actually indicates that my dominators lose powers they liked and get to keep the powers that suck.
[ QUOTE ]
I think the it's the posters way of saying he would like an option to turn xp-off. I certainly know there are times until about level 20 Red Side and 30 Blue Side where I would love to have been able to turn off my xp gain.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, there's no way to turn XP off exactly, but there is a fairly easy way to cut your XP gain in half. You get to work on some badges at the same time too!
Now if only Ouroboros would let me go back and do the Safeguard/Mayhem missions I've missed...
In any case, I'm looking forward to the new stuff and I'm quite sure there's going to be more in the new publish that we haven't heard about yet. Be patient!

Hi. Maybe you weren't aware, but this info isn't exactly published for us, it's published in an attempt to entice past and future players to the game. It's a given that we, who play the game and read the forums, would know about it. That's like an astronaut saying that space is boring. It's a POV thing.
[/ QUOTE ]mr. bowie is right. This info is for general mmo players, we are unlikely to gain significant knowledge from these, and we never have. the badge thing is nice for me though, im hoping for inventions and holiday to get their own tabs, invention bars just bloat the ui to unuseability.

Matt: Weve seen the community mature into a knowledgeable, outspoken, community who really will let us know where we stand. If we do something they like, they let us know. If we do something they dont like, they will let us know that as well, and usually in a constructive way. We like working out issues with the community, and listening to their solutions. A lot of the ideas on powers and PvP we implemented in Issue 13 came directly from player feedback.

All of the D00M threads, PvPers cancelling their accounts and leaving Good Bye threads, people up in arms about this or that, Forum Cartel members and missing person reports, Markets Crashing, and that fire in Steel Canyon that seems to keep flaring up, have us all in the Pre-i13 tension...status quo
I'm going to ignore the PR spin on announcements, and the spinning reactions of the masses till i13 drops. They say they listened to us. I'm not sure who the elite "us" are, but I look at 12 previous issues where the game has actually improved (hush about ED and GDN, it "set the stage for progress") There is so much specualtion about the death of CoX right now, I'm feeling kinda sick. This happens on every issue. Relax.
When i13 drops:
-People are happy and stay in the game
-People get ticked and cancel subs
-people are "meh" about it, but still want to work on stuff
Ok, I'm gonna go crawl back under my rock now till i13 gets here.

Anway, I rolled my eyes after reading this:

Matt: Thats a great question for our senior designer, Floyd Grubb. Floyd, take it away!
[/ QUOTE ]
FAKE enthusiasm.
[/ QUOTE ]
Or you're reading too much into attribution and punctuation.
He could have said, "I think our senior designer would be better able to answer that" in the somber voice of a press conference spokesperson trying to dodge a bullet, granted, but (thankfully) that's not his style.
Exactly how do you envision that phrase... with a cheerleader's dance a a few pom-poms? Fake enthusiasm? Read it again at a more conversational tone in your head. Heck, pretend Eeyore is saying it, for goshsakes.
It doesn't have to sound fake- it's text. Its all about your interpretation, and you seem to WANT to see someone as disingenuous.
[ QUOTE ]
And day jobs are just weak (in my opinion of course). And so are the PVP changes. Now if we had the city vault or shared recipe, infamy, influence, IO, etc storage I'd get a bit more excited.
[/ QUOTE ]
Different things are appealing to other people, as you noted. Day jobs takes a rather popular "power hour" concept that other games do use and gives it a twist to essentially let the player define what kind of "power" he wants that "hour" to be. It's a clever rethinking of the idea.

[/ QUOTE ]
I guess this all depends on who you ask, but it's not being honest based the current sentiment and feedback regarding these changes. Some of it constructive, yes indeedy.
[/ QUOTE ]
Know what? I saw quite a few people post rationally and positively there, said their peace, and move on. I also see quite a few hate-posts blathering on and on, over and over, from the same people. Count posts, and you may find the hate posts outnumber them. Count posters, and it's very, very different. Of course, you won't know until you remove the blinders.
[ QUOTE ]
Lastly there's really not much new here. It just doesn't seem to be announcement worthy. The QOL changes fall way short from the tremendous job done in i12 (again my opinion).
But at least we're getting some more ski runs for the Winter event.
[/ QUOTE ]
Go back to the I12 documentation. Try to see what QoL issues were identified in CLOSED BETA. QoL things come later, and some might not work out, so you don't speak about them until you're 100% sure, lest you get labeled a "liar."
I agree with Shadow_Ravenwolf.

2. Claiming that Shields and Pain Dom are 'for everyone'
[/ QUOTE ]quote this claim from the article. From my reading, it says that shields was added to halp players complete character concepts(unstated was the poll from long ago that said the community wanted shields) and that pain was a response to player requests for villain requests for a villianous variation of the empathy powerset. Both statements are true, shields does address player requests to complete a theme, both for sword based characters and for cap america style characters, and pain is a response to vill players requests for an empathy varient for redside. please quote where it claims that shields or pain dom are "for everyone" as you claim
[ QUOTE ]
Q: Tell us about the new powersets and changes to the existing sets? Will Issue 13 offer something for everyone?
...
FG: Issue 13 offers two new powersets for players to use: Shields, a defensive powerset for Brutes, Scrappers and Tankers, and Pain Domination, a buff/debuff powerset available to Corruptors and Masterminds. The Shields set is being made primarily in response to hero player requests to fulfill a character theme, while Pain Domination is being made in response to villain player requests for a villainous version of the Empathy powerset.
[/ QUOTE ]A simple 'no, but there is this stuff' would have sufficed in answer to that question.
so in short, he wasnt sufficiently down on his own work for you, so we go with overblown hyperbole to distort their message. gotcha.
oh and also that would have made one boring as (self-censored) interview, do you prefer sodium pentathol styled interviews normally?
oh and final edit. i notice your quote removes the second paragraph, it helps to show the scope of his answer where he mentions significant changes for kheld players, invuln players, and ea players and toggle changes...that expands things a bit more accurately.

And yay for the new badge UI !

This.
Finally, this.

1. Confirmation that patrol XP is optional
...
Yeah, I think I'm within my rights to be very damn worried.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm having a really hard time seeing anything worrying about people being able to choose which of a number of available offline-time bonuses they receive. People who want double xp can get it. Those who don't want it don't have to earn it. I can't see a downside to that.

It would appear that if you don't want on patrol XP bonuses, you need to log off in a day job area. So you don't get both bonuses.
Seems fair enough to me.
[ QUOTE ]
Given it's an interview about Issue 13 specifically and not for anything beyond that, I'm not surprised. It's mostly public relation stuff, or news for the uninitiated.
[/ QUOTE ]
Just to repeat this: all of these kind of articles are for those people who might play other MMOs / PC games and could get interested in CoH/V, or are former players. For those of us that read every post of the dev digest, scan every post about the closed beta and hide outside Positron's bedroom window at night in case he reveals something by talking in his sleep (who the hell is Rosebud?) most of these articles aren't going to provide anything new.
... and then, on the flip side, if completely new info had been released in these articles, people would complain "WHY WEREN'T WE TOLD FIRST? WHY DO THE DEVS HATE US?".
[ QUOTE ]
so in short, he wasnt sufficiently down on his own work for you, so we go with overblown hyperbole to distort their message. gotcha.
[/ QUOTE ]No, they just chose, when asked something for everyone to not address everyone. They instead trotted out something for half the non-Epic ATs, then talk about the HEATs.

Good reply.
But for the record, Sodium Pentathol would be a terrible interviewing tool. It's a depressant that reduces higher cortical functions. It works as a truth serum mostly because fabricating lies is more complex than telling the truth, so it's tougher to do under the drug.
You want a good interview with lots of accidental secret-spilling, get a Dev souped up on sugar and caffeine.
...well, more than their usual doses at least...
I'm glad they spent all that time on the holiday stuff like the zombie invasion.....which reminds me....oh thats right, I have yet to see a zombie invasion......

QFT. The only things that are new in this article is the badge UI changes and the NPC placement. Until we get an example of such a change for the NPCs, who knows if it'll be good or not. As for the badge UI changes, probably could have been done in just a paragraph by Posi here on the boards:
[ QUOTE ]
Hey, folks, Positron here. Look, we know we've had some complaints about the badge user interface, so we've decided to do some changes. We hope you'll enjoy them. First, we're going to add more badge bars than ever before, such as badge bars to gladiator badges, or bars indicating how many more plaques you need to get a history badge. On top of that, instead of just a blue bar, we're going to give you actual real number percentages so you can tell EXACTLY how far you are on some of those badges.
[/ QUOTE ]
Something like that. This article just seemed to be a rehash of stuff that was already known.
[/ QUOTE ]
Keep in mind the audience.
The article starts by explaining what CoH IS. It's directed to the curious outsider more than the hardcore newshound.
[/ QUOTE ]
Irrelevant. When they made that interview, they knew Lighthouse would link here. Therefore, it should of been written for US. Not new people, that might give the game a try (possibly again) and turn into more subs, thus improving the profitability of the game and making NCSoft even more likely to give us more treats. That would be idiotic!

On patrol is the default Day Job for players who dont log out from one of the specific Day Job locations. We wanted to make sure everyone got some type of reward, even if they didnt have the time to get to a specific location before logging out.

Glad to see that this will work as originally announced, though now that On Patrol's reward is known I'm sure others won't be.

Nerf xp!
Seriously though, we have the Ouroborus system in place to go back and play content we missed. How is this an issue?
[/ QUOTE ]
Some of us like the satisfaction of getting it all the first time through. It took my ele/storm corruptor a lot of planning and a bit of debt to get every story arc and badge mission done for levels 1-15 (including Veluta Lunata) without having to use Ouroborus.
