You were only AWARDED THEM temporarily, but you will have ACCESS to them FOREVER. They function just like purchased or vet reward slots. In two years, if CoX is still here and if you hadn't added a slot anywhere, you would still have your i12 freebies.

I think that there is something else still wrong with the additional slots. I keep getting the message that my character is still logging out but has been for hours. I can play others that were there before I12. Also our SG base will not allow anyone in from the SG or Coalition, it locks their pc's up and they have to end task. I smell a server crash immenent.
Claimed != Placed.
if you did'nt CLAIM them you lost them, if you placed them on a server, then they are yours to keep, forever... and ever

Actually, the two free slots that were launched with the Character Slot service / Issue 12 *will* end at some point in the future.
If you have not claimed or assigned those slots to a server, then after the window closes, you won't get those two free slots.
This was noted in the Issue 12 Release Notes.
We have not yet announced when the window for claiming the two free character slots will end, but we will give advance notice prior to ending it.

Let me just say that I heartily disagree with this. I have not claimed any free slots because I don't have a server full up to NEED to do so. By this command decision, I'll lose those two slots, even though I did was was required to get them, simply because I don't need them NOW. In the future, should I fill a server and want them, I'm out of luck, even though I earned them.
This doesn't seem fair. I guess the smart move is to go ahead and drop them on my most populated server (or one each on the top two) and hope that is where I want them, in the future.
I suppose, though, since I don't need them anyway, I can't miss what I don't have, right? Just seems like a choice that doesn't have any good reason for being made. *shrug*

What, exactly, happens if you use them, then later delete a character?
The way things work now, it seems that they will be lost. If that's the case, they're not a very effective reward.

You might want to run in there and just make Test Subject toons to take up the spaces. I do this to save names that I might one day want to use. Fill up the server slots with them and delete to start another when you need to. Might take a bit of time to do it but it should ensure you don't loose the slots.

Doesn't really make any sense. Do they force us to use free costume tokens before they expire? No, because I don't want to change my costume at this time, but I can always use a token later. If I don't want to roll a 13th character on a server at this time, why should I be forced to apply that slot?
Heck after getting one server full I tried out another one and actually am liking it better. (Names withheld to protect the innocent. 
) I might not want to use my free slots until I fill up that server now. But that could be another few months or year down the road depending on what other powersets are proliferated or when shields come out. Then again my sg might talk me back into another slot on my home server.
I'd prefer to use it when I'm ready though and not be forced to at some date for no reason.

But in all seriousness, it was stated that they will give advanced notice to when they will close the availability of the server slots; it shouldn't be sprung upon you without any warning.
Also, it's not the end of the world if you put one character slot on a server that you later wish you could have put in a different server. Look on the bright side, you still have a free character slot that the devs gave to you as a gift! Buck up a bit and look on the bright side of things

Purely guessing here, but I can think of a few administrative reasons for something like this. Maybe they want to get the extra slots assigned to servers permanently so they can have an idea of here the extra demand is and plan hardware accordingly, rather than have floating "potential" demand that could materialize on any server at player whim?
Not that that's a customer-pleasing marketing strategy, mind you; I'm just speculating as to their reasoning, which is probably administrative and not punitive.

GF, that was really unclear from the patch notes. It sounded like getting them was available for a limited time, not that you'd lose them if you didn't use them.
To all those complaining about the slots becoming unavailable, just remember one thing. If you don't use them now, I don't see why you would ever use them. Think of it this way: You have 12 character slots. If you aren't close to filling them up, you have...what, 5 used? That means you're most likely one of those people that only make a few characters (non-altaholic types), so why would you need them in the first place? Just add 2 slots to your favorite server, or 1 to each of your 2 favorite servers, and then you don't have to complain anymore.
Character slot issues really showed me how much this community likes to complain for no reason. It was stated in the i12 patch notes that they are temporary, and I believe GF said it would be announced before the slots are taken off. I'm not seeing the issue here.

GF how does the game decide which of the assigned/applied/claimed slots are "freebie slots" and which are vet/purchased ones?
I purchased 15 addn'l character slots on top of my 4 vet slots and 2 freebies. I've been distributing them amongst the 2 servers I play on (Guardian & Infinity), but still have 6 ones open right now, that I'm waiting to assign as they are needed.
My worry is that if the time-limit to claim the "freebie slots" expires, I may loose 2 of those remaining slots because the game attributes them to "feebie slots" rather than purchased ones. To confound the situation a bit, I think that I always purchased addn'l slots while unused ones remained (in other words, I didn't use up my "freebie"/vet slots before I started buying.

Yes we need this "Lose free slots" thing defined. I could understand not giving out 2 free slots anymore but why in the world remove them after they have been given out?
Hopefully the free slots are like free Respecs and are used up first. I don't really want to use up all my free slots until I have a reason to but I did use up 2 of them.
Personally I think taking them away if unused is a mistake, unless they are going to be giving out slots on a regular basis (like free respecs) and need to "make room" in a special free slots, slot type.

You are very mistaken. I have 4 servers filled with characters and characters on most other servers. When issue 12 came out I used 2 slots for a Widow and a SoA, but until I am done playing the characters I have (or feel the need to create a character on a full server) I don't want to use up my slots because I don't know what server to use them on yet.

What worries me, given the current issues with slots disappearing when the store server is down, is that at a later time I will delete a character made on one of these two slots, and instead of freeing up the slot for use, it will just disappear for good.
I am hoping this is just a misunderstanding, and the free slots will always be there if you logged in between issue 12 and the time they pull the offer. If not, I expect things will be chaotic.

Oh that would suck. I always have a bubble of of chracters I havent finalized or that I later decide to delete and decide to remake on my other account, etc. I'd hate to see a CHARACTER DELETION also delete the slot.
I would hope that once a slot is redeemed, you can never lose the slot ... empty, deleted or otherwise.
Or am I in a panic about nothing?

In this case, people have a legtimate reason to complain. The original annoucement from Positron said they are giving two free characters slots to all accounts. He said that in clear, no incertain words. Now was are hearing from Ghost Falcon something. "What we are giving is a limited time oppurtunity to get 2 free character slots. Redeem them NOW before it's too late." That is a much different thing from what Positiron annouced. To bit it mildly, they have been deceptive.

That is how I read the patch notes for I12 as well. The interpretation of gine out the granting of 2 free character slots "new" accounts would be limited was teh most logical interpretation for me.
This is the 6th time I've rewritten this paragraph. Previous versions had very strong language. All I'm going say is this as a compute professional myself. I'm not pleased at all on how Ghost Falcon is telling is us they've implemented the 2 free character slots. There is a better way of doing it.

Nothing was said about loosing a slot later if you deleted a toon. At least nothing by the devs. This is rampant player speculation/panicking at its best.

For everyone who was worried about me, my slots (and the option to buy new ones) are back. I had a feeling it was only a matter of time.
