Lost server slots with new patch

In this case, people have a legtimate reason to complain. The original annoucement from Positron said they are giving two free characters slots to all accounts. He said that in clear, no incertain words. Now was are hearing from Ghost Falcon something. "What we are giving is a limited time oppurtunity to get 2 free character slots. Redeem them NOW before it's too late." That is a much different thing from what Positiron annouced. To bit it mildly, they have been deceptive.

[/ QUOTE ]

Positron talked about people getting free slots. That was not, however, the official announcement. Here is the exact note in question:

[ QUOTE ]
For a limited time, all accounts that log into the Live Servers will receive 2 free Character Slots. This is for a *Limited* time only.

[/ QUOTE ]

Calling the devs "deceptive" (aka liars) is not only uncalled for, but unfounded in this case.

You should be extremely judicious when using the word "deceptive" when describing someone or their actions. Deception, in that conotation, implies intent. And if you really think that there was a deliberate intent to mislead you... you my friend have some issues.

GF, that was really unclear from the patch notes. It sounded like getting them was available for a limited time, not that you'd lose them if you didn't use them.

[/ QUOTE ]

That is how I read the patch notes for I12 as well. The interpretation of gine out the granting of 2 free character slots "new" accounts would be limited was teh most logical interpretation for me.

This is the 6th time I've rewritten this paragraph. Previous versions had very strong language. All I'm going say is this as a compute professional myself. I'm not pleased at all on how Ghost Falcon is telling is us they've implemented the 2 free character slots. There is a better way of doing it.

Here's where I agree... to some extent. The patch notes clearly say "all accounts that log into the Live Servers will receive 2 free Character Slots". While it mentions a "limited time", the logical interpretation is that, so long as one logs in within the "limited time", one receives the slots. There is no mention of needing to assign them or use them, lest they be lost at a later date.

I read this as functioning much in the same way as the anniversary badges (except, obviously, they are not character specific). So long as you log in during the "limited time" window, you get and keep them.

If this is, indeed, not the case, then that statement was [u]extremely[u] poorly worded. If that's the case, then there needs to be a clear restating of this issue, including announcements at the login links, and a very long window before unused "freebie" slots are revoked. And by that I mean 1-2 months. Bear in mind this is the summertime and people are often on extended vacations w/o game access.

It's my hope that GF worded his post poorly, and that this is largely much ado about nothing. Wouldn't, after all, be the first time a dev did this.

Also, the question of "what slots get used first", when one has a mix of "freebie", vet and purchased slots, needs to be addressed as well.

I was going to say something like this but since Hallowed beat me to it, I'll just do one of those QFTJatAW things.

We were told that the slots would be granted by logging on within a limited time. Not that they would be revoked if not used within a limited time.

I know Hallowed just posted this, but it bears reading again:

For a Limited time, Log in, get free slots.

No mention of "Use 'em or lose 'em."

Now, I've used mine, because I desperately needed them right away. But you told us one thing - stick to it, if for no one else, then for the sake of the people who don't read the forums. They got their email explaining how it works, let it work the way you told them it would.

I stand corrected.

I checked with our Engineering team to make sure that this is accurate. I didn't want to state something and then have to correct myself again.

1) If a player logs in during the two free character slot "gift" window, then those slots are placed in player's character slot inventories. Character Slots within your inventories can never be removed, even after the gift window closes.

2) If a player NEVER logs in during the character slot "gift" window, the window closes, then any new or re-activated player will never get the two free slots.

Please note that the free two slots are only being given to "active" accounts that Log into the game during this gift window. If your account is active, but you've never logged in, you're not getting your two free slots when the window closes.

3) Once a character slot (via Veteran Reward, free gift or purchased slot) is placed within a Player's Inventory, then the order in which they redeemed is irrelevant.

When we decide to end the two free character slot window, we will give advance notice.

Many thanks for the clarification, GF. I know I wasn't the only one a tad miffed by the idea of having those vanish just because we weren't ready to use them. This makes me a happy player again (both the news and the quick response).

As always, keep up the good work, guys.

See? Much ado about nothing.

Silly GF! Silly overreacting community!

Final point of clarification then, please:

I have two "Redeem Slot : 2 Left" at the bottom of my character selection screen (because I logged in during the window -- I don't have any vet reward slots, I haven't been playing that long ). I haven't redeemed them because I don't need them (yet).

Are you saying I need to redeem those before the window "closes" or that they'll still be there waiting to be redeemed even after that?

All the references to "slots" seem to me to refer to redeemed slots. I just want to verify that this also applies to the unredeemed "tokens" (if you will), that "slots in a player's inventory" includes unredeemed ones.

Thank you, and I apologize if I'm being more obtuse than normal.

Once they are in the "redeem" space, you will never lose them, essentially.

You must log in within the gift window to get them placed in your redeem space. Log in after the gift window and you will not get two freebies to redeem.

I'm not going by what the the official anoucement or what the patch notes read. I'm going by what Ghost Falcon posted. If Ghost Falcon's misspoke, it wasn't communicate to him properly, or whatever, I will offer an apology. But until such a time, I stand by my post.

Edit:

I just noticed GF's post. And I now do offer my sincerest apology to Ghost Falcon. This pushed two of my hot buttons, and I do have a very nasty temper when set off.

You rednames really need muzzles. :P Verify, then post! Verify, then post! So much crapstorming can be saved on these boards if you did that. :P

That should go for so many posters as well

So basically, once you have them, they can't be lost (through normal means). You don't have to redeem them, you won't loose them once you have them. So if you have 3 left unslotted today, you'll have 3 tomorrow, and 3 next month, etc. until you redeem them for slots.

If you delete a character on a redeemed slot, you don't loose the slot itself, only the character (just like normal empty slots).

So basically what GF is saying is: log into your account before the free giveaway is over, because after that, you'll have to pay for extra slots as normal

Nothing was said about loosing a slot later if you deleted a toon. At least nothing by the devs. This is rampant player speculation/panicking at its best.

You Sir, are indeed in a panic about nothing.

I disagree. This is exactly what happens now when the system goes offline. We are asking because we want to make sure that what we are seeing when the system is offline is not a precurser of behavior for when slots are "rescinded". Given the Dev's recent track record for QoL bugs that seem hard to have missed in QA, I don't think making assumptions that things will be OK is prudent.

However, I see this has been clarified, and I'm plenty happy with the clarification. Asked and answered.

Only sort of related. When these slots went live, I more or less experienced one of the greatest CoH bugs ever. I was unable to redeem slots during what I guess was a server freezup, logging on and off various characters to double check. When on the 4th try I was allowed to finally claim free slots, I apparently had earned 12 free slots. My guess is that there is currently a bug possibly exploitable that allows for laggy servers to award veteran slots repeatedly. I should have received 4 slots (30 month vet), yet got 3 times as many. I will be sending this via PM to various devs as well.
