What's the definition of "high-end cards" here? Didn't see specifics in the original post.

I'm currently running a GeForce 7800 GTX. May be upgrading in Feb, but still...

[/ QUOTE ]

I was looking for a NVIDIA sli motherboard (will upgrade to use dual 9600GT's in March) when I thought of this chart.

I'm not sure how accurate it is, but I want to say that the first column would be for high end cards, the second for mid-range, and the third that most of us stay away from when it comes to gaming.

What do I set it for an Intel Celeron D processor and an nVidia Geforce FX 5500?

Is there a Nintendo 64 level graphics setting?

HEY PEEPS!

Well, I'd like to say thanks to the OP for this nVidia guide for MAX settings.

Not to brag, but I knew my system could handel it.

Now that you've shown me the CORRECT way to use advanced settings, I can run the game in full glory at 1080p, and also other guides to help fix that GTX 260/Vista/Driver crash issue, all of that has been fixed, and all I need to do is play

System:

Intel Q9650 @3000 Mhz
GTX 260 Super-C [Up-to-date Drivers]
4 Gigs of DDR3
Samsung 32" LCDTV [WOOT!!]

Sorry, but for that combo - Safe Mode. I was using a FX5500 during CoH CLOSED beta 5 years ago (and the graphics engine and other parts of the gam have seen signifigant upgrades that now require more horsepower for anything aboove the absolute minimum settings); and it barely did the job then.

I have not tried Windows 7 as of yet. Regardless, I don't see why the guide would need updating. All of the settings should pretty much be the same. I've been running 2 of 4 PC's on Vista 64 (and the others are still on XP) and the only time the settings differ is when one video card is too weak to run things so high.

To the extent you notice any slowdown in framerate, the same tips (as originally posted) apply as far as what to try turning down first. I'm not sure how well NVIDIA drivers are optimized for Windows 7 (if at all), and that may have an affect. Perhaps a starting test would be to try to run Futuremark on both Vista or WinXP and Win7 and see how things differ.

ACTUALLY (regarding newer drivers, not win7 specifically):

DO BE AWARE OF ONE THING WHEN MOVING TO DRIVERS 185+

Annoyingly, the tab "ADJUST DESKTOP COLOR SETTINGS" are often lost. Alternatively, what happens is that under "2. Choose how color is set", the default becomes "Other applications control color settings", which effectively eliminates your prior brightness/contrast/ gamma AND digital vibrance settings.

Thus, if you notice your screen & game look less well defined and lacking in VIBRANCE, double check that the "Use Nvidia settings" box is flicked.

Please note that this is simialr but NOT THE SAME as the section labeled "Adjust video color settings" which is different.

Makes it easier for me to set up TweakCoH if/when things go wrong and you have to set it up... or just a reference for when you do it!

Enjoy!

Not sure if you still read or keep up with this post but I have 9800 series card and I cannot update my drivers past the 177s without CoX locking up the computer or just not responding, I have not tied the new 190. drivers yet but I have made many attempts, with the new windows update I can finally get CoX to run on 18x plus drivers but the load screen is way off to where I cannot access the log in area just see the lower bottom part of the CoH log in screen. So basically anytime I run or change drivers CoH will not load so I always have to roll back to the 177 drivers.
EDIT: I am running vista 64.
Any suggestions on what might be the problem?

Try loading into Safe Mode for the game after updating the drivers. This "should" reset things and get the login screen to where you can access it.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

thanks for the reply, but your saying I need to reboot my machine in Safe Mode then run CoX....cause I am not aware of how to start CoX in any type of Safe mode...lol.

I will try this solution out once I am home, with the new 190. series drivers and see if this clears up the problem, and so far since the the Vista SP2 pack update I seem to have had no trouble with getting locked up or booted except when I attempt the access the Black Market ( have not tried Wentworth's yet due to mainly been jamming on Villain Side ).

No. Click on the Updater, on the first screen click Next. On the next screen with the EULA put a checkmark in the box labeled Safe Mode BEFORE you click Accept.

This will load the game with very minimal graphics.

It appears that NVIDIA has released version 190.62 (of the drivers) last week. Any early word on how it plays with CoH and if any settings tweaks are needed?

I have an older pc/WinXP/AGP...7900GS card. Installed the 190.62 drivers and they work great for me. I can still double-box without a hitch, all is aok so far.

Uhh, why are you referring to it as 1080p? We're not talking TV resos here...

Lower the Resolution Scaling all the way down (I think it's around 320x240). It works, but it's awful.

Under the newest driver (at this time, 190.62), please note that the section:
"Adjust Desktop Color Settings"
in the Nvidia control panel has changed.

I noticed that on 2 of my 3 gaming PCs, the above settings were bumped to "other applications control color". I had to reset them to "Use Nvidia settings". You'll also note one other important item. Digital Vibrance now seems to start at 50% as 'normal'. Previously, 0% seemed 'normal' with anything above 0% as actually on. Now you will likely find yourself going above 50% to see a difference. It would also appear that Gamma and Hue are new options for this tab. I did not adjust mine beyond the standard settings.

Questions:

I am running an Nvidia 9800 GT with 1 Gig of onboard. I have all my settings set to these specs.

Question 1: I have an option in my Nvidia control panel NOT listed here: Maximum number of prerendered frames. This is currently set at 3 and I have no idea what it does or what the setting should be.

Question 2: In my control panel my PhysX support is Enabled, in-game the option is still greyed out. Does Coh not support this any more? I used to be able to enable it in-game. Can anyone shed any light here.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

-Doc

The latest driver versions have been changing some of the options available, yes. As for what that specific one should beset at, I'm actually not sure. I haven't really experimented with my driver much in a while.

The game only supports actual Aegia PhysX hardware. As far as I'm aware, the PhysX included in NVidia's drivers are actually software emulated. Nobody that I know has ever been able to enable that option in-game with only an NVidia card and updated drivers. I believe you'd need an actual Aegia card.

If you were able to enable that option before, then I'm assuming you have a separate PhysX card. If you can no longer enable it in-game after installing new NVidia software, then you might have to disable/change that option in the NVidia settings so it will work off the original hardware instead.

Posted

Thanks for that reply Master. I'll sniff around and see what I can find about the prerendered frames option.

As to the other part, I do not have a Aegia card. I actually just got my comp back from being fixed. The video card was replaced among other things. Old card was a 9800 GT 1 Gig onboard w/Physx support, EVGA. New Card is not an EVGA but has the same specs including the Physx support. The old card is what I was able to enable that in-game option with.

It was my understanding that the PhysX in the newer cards was basically the same thing as the actual seperate Aegia card. Now I really don't know what the hell to think!

Thanks again

Considering that most of the Nvidia cards that "support PhysX" were already on the market before NVidia even bought the rights to it, I don't see how that is possible. They simply added software to the driver package to emulate and utilize that type of feature.

The problem with CoH is that there is an OLD PhysX package within the game files that does not recognize the NVidia emulation and will not work without the actual hardware... which many people say does not even make much of a difference these days with the increase in performance of other parts of the system anyway. You are still getting PhysX, you just can't turn on the option that says "Ageia".

I don't know how you were able to enable it before.

A while ago, when PhysX was still quite new to the game you used to be able to install the PhysX drivers and it would allow you to enable it. It no longer works like that. I don't think it was ever intended to work like that.

As for everything else, you are correct. CoH does not support PhysX outside of Ageia's physical card. It doesn't recognize nVidia's version. It's not actually emulation though. nVidia integrated PhysX into their CUDA system. So it's still hardware based PhysX, it's just that CoH wasn't coded to recognize it at all, only the physical PhysX card from Ageia.

We'll see....
