jg0001's NVIDIA Settings for Quality (ver2)

I tried using the settings from this post for my new laptop which has to be set to the lowest graphics quality in game settings for the game to run at normal speed and it did not help and slowed my game to the speed of a turtle. I doubled checked all the settings mentioned and tried lowering the ones indicated for slower systems, but it did not help. Here are my laptops specs:

Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv6700
AMD Turion Processor 64X2 2.0 GHz
3GB RAM
My video card is a GeForce 7150M
My drivers should all be up to date and I am not running anything else while playing.

Is there any other info I could provide to determine why the settings didn't help. I just purchased this laptop 6 months ago and I really would like to play the game at a decent graphics quality. Is my computer gimped? My previous computer was older than dirt so I am not that computer savvy and this is my first MMO game. Thanks

[/ QUOTE ] This thread tells us how to achieve the best Quality (for those systems that can handle it), not performance.

Obviously, if your system "has to be set to the lowest graphics quality.... to run at normal speed", then raising the quality is going to slow you down. You answered your own question.

You have a 7150M.. you better stick to the lowest settings. You wont get any better quality without interfering with your performance.

Well that was part of my question, are my computer's specs too weak to handle the game with hi settings or was it possible I was doing something wrong or missed something. I am not an expert on computers but I am running a brand new computer on a 4 year old game. I'd expect it to be able to handle it. Is the quality of the video card the problem? What video card would I need to upgrade to to be able to handle the higher settings?

[/ QUOTE ] brand new system does not mean it was built for graphics. That card/chip is your problem for sure.

If you are going to upgrade video, you'd want the second digit of an Nvidia card to be at least a x4xx to be decently playable, and a x6xx to be good.

I suppose you can see for yourself what a x1xx would be..

The x4xx is ok for people who just happened to have that when they started, but for an upgrade.. do yourself a favor and go right to the x6xx or higher: 8600, 9600, 8800 or 9800. There is also the GTX 280 and GTX 260 if your system can take them.

but for now.. you need to have those graphics at lower quality to improve your performance unfortunately.

The 7150M is integrated graphics. It performs just fine for watching video and running Aero in Vista but is not designed for any kind of serious gaming. This is why the game doesn't play well.

Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do about it. Unlike desktops there is no way to upgrade or replace the video adapter on 98% of all laptops.

To get the best performance make sure the control panel is set to High Performance, with antialiasing and anisotropic filtering both off. Also make sure that these are turned off in the game's options as well as bloom, depth of field, water, desaturation, and particle physics (all should be off/none). I would also reduce world details to the minimum amount and reduce particle count to around 4000.

You can experiment with different settings for shader quality, world/character textures and character details to see which will give you the best visuals without severely impacting performance. You could also try setting antialiasing to 2x in the Nvidia control panel just to see what happens. The increase in visual quality might be worth it if the loss of performance is small.

Integrated video usually doesn't have its own VRAM but instead uses a portion of system RAM. If this is the case with your machine you should go into the BIOS and ensure the maximum amount of RAM possible is allocated to video.

If all else fails consider running the game at a lower resolution.

Quick question: Do any of these setting really affect Windowed mode in any way that deserves mention. Sure, I want great quality, but I have a Quad Core now with a Nvidia 9800 GT. I've been enjoying running both my accounts at the same time. But if I want to take some high quality pictures for, oh, a costume contest or for some awesome pics to make as my Screensaver... should I revert to a Desktop setting to do that? Just curious on any opinions.

Your graphics quality should be the same in windowed and desktop mode.

Unless I missed some memo.

Wow, I'm impressed. All I had to change were a couple settings but they did a huge world of good. I'm getting a constant 75 FPS in a mission right now, up from 30ish prior to reading this guide. Thanks for this!

nVidia is really screwing up with their newer 8 series drivers. I haven't been able to use anything since 177.79.
178.13 disabled digital vibrance settings.
180.48 first disabled direct fan control, then crashed my system forcing a safemode uninstall and a system restore.

I've got 180.something installed now on my Vista 64 machine (as well as two XP machines) and haven't noticed anything unusual.

I do make it a point to write down my video/color settings before updating the driver, as it seems to haphazardly toss out my brightness/contrast/digital vibrance/gamma settings.

That's good to know. I'm jumping ship once I get my new pc built & I'm used to ATI hanging on to all my settings.

I just updated my nVidia driver for my 9600 GT to 180.48, and I get crashes now on a regular basis. My system is Vista Ultimate 64-bit, 4GB RAM, 1.5TB HDD, Quad Core 2.4GHz, P5ND ASUS motherboard. I don't see why I should be crashing so often. Is there some setting to alter to get the game to stop crashing? I lost 2 badges already because of this.

James, you have a separate thread, I've replied there.

Yes, upgrade to WinXP Proffessional (64-bit).

I have a GTX 280 SSX on my best PC, running Vista 64. While I'm not sure about windowed mode, I can tell you that merely bringing up a browser window (and making it the focus) drops FPS by half.

Hey JG, i have a GeForce 9600GT graphics card and the game runs perfect. Only thing i noticed was that on my dads ati system he has reflections in the water of buildings etc...is there any way to enable that on the geforce card?

I'm not aware of any feature that is available on an ATi card but not an Nvidia card. Try PMing Billzbubba...

He called it ghosting which just means that the reflection of the buildings and sky can be seen in the water like you would get with real water.

Actually, I thought your were talking about the odd halo reflection of the character over water on ATI cards set for Low Water.

I've heard of buildings showing up in the various ponds around Paragon, but my brain is telling me that this only occurred as a fluke with some older versions of ATI drivers.

Be well, people of CoH.

OK, dumb question related to the first part of the first post in this thread - how do I access the NVidia Control Panel to change the settings listed?

I can't imagine the game looking any better than it already does for me, but it's worth a shot.

Yh i since found out that with the ghosting of buildings in the water, even though it looks cool because it looks like the sort of thing real water would do with reflecting it removes the water effects on your character when they are in the water..all you see is the buildings and not your body..so im guessing that its a driver bug.

What's the definition of "high-end cards" here? Didn't see specifics in the original post.

I'm currently running a GeForce 7800 GTX. May be upgrading in Feb, but still...

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

Start menu > Control Panel > NVIDIA Control Panel, at least that's how I get there in XP.

I'm running a 9800 GTX and can run everything (iirc) at jg0001's settings.
