What My Six Year Old Has Learned From CoX

Like many players, I tend to run down the middle of the street to avoid aggro. When my 5yr old daughter saw this, she scolded me, "Daddy! Stay on the sidewalk!" So now, if she's present when I'm playing .. I stay on the sidewalk, battle every purse snatcher, and look both ways before crossing.

She's also started lobbying for her own account, which would be our households third as my wife plays, too.

Oh, and lastly .. She really, really wants a sand castle building emote.

How's a girl like me supposed to remain a bitter, angry cynic when there's so much cute going on here?

Sister Flame, Hero 2 and BabyMage, COH:The Next Generation?

[/ QUOTE ]

It actually does raise the possibility -- and expanding on Sister Flame's question about the marriage -- (to me) of possible Ourobors content. A short hop twenty, twenty-five years into the future -- see what the next generation of heroes and villains have to offer us.

Does Ms. Liberty have a son (M. Liberty)? Has Positron found someone to bear him twins (Quark and Lepton) (and does he make them run his task force because "it builds character")?

I mean, twenty-five years into the future, a lot could happen. By then, people who've started Quarterfield might even be nearing the halfway point!

Scary or Shocking? Not for my girls. Some little ones may be afraid by some of of the mobs, but Flame just groans at the "puking zombies" cause they dish out some nasty damage and she finds the Freaks funny.

If she thinks Freakshow are funny, she's going to love this fan video: Thank You. (Looks good at full screen size.)

Totally kid safe. She'll probably torment you by making you play it again and again.

Then she'll want to know how to do all those emotes.

OMG!! I've seen this one on YouTube bookmarked it even and still get a laugh out of it every time. Now I have a copy of my very own. Thanks Zombie_Man!

Great thread.

My 8yo has "played" on and off for oh, probably over two years now. He's come a long way with reading and typing, though he still could have a better handle on the gameplay (and he's been playing a MM, which doesn't seem like the easiest juggling act). But he's getting there. I started a second account to team with him last year, but unfortunately our laptop is underpowered, and not well suited for playing the game. I could see teaming a lot more whenever we get a second desktop. I still don't let him team, but I could revisit that now that his communication skills are better.

My daughter (5) likes to make toons sometimes too, and where my son is pretty standard with his designs/names (you can tell when the default face changed by looking at his list of characters, and they are all <power> <his name&gt, my daughter...wow, she's out there. Some really unique combos.

Suggestions:

Influence Sink: IO Level Mod/Recrafting
Random Merit Rolls: Scale cost by Toon Level

Have to say I really appreciate this thread and its responses. Our son has been playing since beta, when he was 9. He actually got to participate in the end of beta event, while I was out of town. He still likes to rub it in to this day.

I think CoH has been great for him, learning to help and to rely on others, expanding his creativity, learning to accept defeat, and learning to get up and keep going.

Our youngest is nine, and she enjoys creating characters and flying around more than blasting the bad guys. Once the fighting starts she is bored quickly, but she is always happy to go back to the costume editor and try for more. Recently she has also taken up interior design, having great fun decorating an alt base we have on liberty.

Reading this thread has been great. Seeing all the other parents that share this with their children is amazing. Seeing the community support behind this is also nice. Its community like this that keeps me involved in CoH, and makes me feel good as a parent letting my kids explore this world.

Awesome thread.

My 4-year-old is seriously into superheroes right now (thank you DVDs of Superfriends and Spider-Man '69), and watches me play on occassion. The other day I was playing villains.

I was fighting Legacy Chain, and he asked what bad guys I was fighting. I said they're called Legacy Chain, but they're actually the good guys, and I'm playing the bad guy.

My son get's a shocked look on his face and stammers out "How... how COULD you!?".

Incredible.
My daughter plays the game with me as well, she is 5. She loves it especially when she can make my MM and all his zombies go swimming. I let her design a costume on all my guys and she likes that the most. These are the kinds of things I like to read about the most in this game. Bonding through CoX, gotta love it.

So, if you ever run across a Fire Blaster named Sister Flame on Freedom, chances are its my daughter havign fun, but learning many things at the same time. Feel free to team with her, but don't be a "poopyhead" (her words, not mind).

Ciao!

P.S. She is working on her typing skills, so if you see her say "Go", "Go", "Go" about twenty times, don't worry. It's only 1 of about 100 words she can spell.

Was there any chance she was in a pickup group last night in Faultline? I was on Megafantastic Man (FF defender), and I swear there was a Sister Flame in our group, or at least someone named very very similarly. Though it was kind of late when I finally logged off, so it may not have been her.

I have to admit, I thought the OP was just great! Though my GF and I usually refer to Clockworks as 'tic-toks' and Vhazs as 'bugs'...

Plus, if you or Sister Flame want to play on Liberty (Hero), Justice (either), or Pinnicale (Hero), global my self @Travlr or my GF @Kiriko-Chan . We have standing SG slots open for either or both of you. I think it would be a blast to play with either of you.

Though the OP kinda reminds me of something that happened when my GF & I stayed with some friends and their kids at a con last november...

First I need to set up some details...
1) The couple's youngest (8 going on 9, IIRC...) is a high-functioning autistic boy. Nice kid, and is some-what computer savy, ie he was able to Google at about 2 1/2.

2) Because of said child's tendencies to roam, our firends usually get a suite to keep him reigned in (thoughts of the fire alarm drill he inadvertingly caused a couple of years ago at that hotel come to mind...). They also have a number of other minors [/i](Their two teenage daughters and friends)[/i] in attendance. So they really need the room...

3) My GF & I had given a copy of GvE to this couple last march, and IIRC, the eldest daughter did play for a while. So the family has been exposed to the CoX world.

Now then....
My GF & I have a small, protable gaming rig to bring with us to Cons and the like. And of course we brought along to this one. We had it up and running in the 'common room' part of the suite (where we also had our crash space... there was a queen roll-away that was left from the suties pervious users...) and net connected. Now the couple and a number of the kinds knew we had the rig up and running, not the youngest one though. He would soon enough...

Now said autistic child has this habit of waking early (i.e. 5AM-ish) and bang closet doors and the like in the 'common room'. Yea, I think everyone can see where this might be going... I think I'm somewhat greatful he did discover the rig. I had the CoH login screen up and started to show one of the other kids the game on Saturday afternoon, I logged the autisic child into one of my toons, a Energy/Ice Blaster called Cryo Blast I have on Justice. Now this is one of the times, I'm gald for the 'ghosting' that can sometimes happen in game. I showed the little one some of the basic moving around and that the toon could fly. That, I think, he got the best enjoyment out of and it kept him entertained for some time.

Fast-forward to the next morning,,, my GF hears "City of Heroes, City of Heroes" as the little guy is trying to log into my CoX account. She nudges me awake, so I logged him back in to the same character, hoping for another 'ghosting', so that my GF & I could get a couple of more hours of sleep...but alas I was mistaken. I was nuged either by my GF, some sounds comming from the game, or from him, not quite sure which, but came to the realization that he got himself killed and used the Base's medical instead of the hospital. Under most conditions, I wouldn't of been overly worried, but Cryo has base editing rights in the SG! And he figured out how to access the base editor. Thankfully, he only removed a couple of flooring pieces and not anything important.

Now the copule was glad I did bring the rig and was able to entertain their youngest. All I'm gonna have to do in the future, is make sure I let him use characters that don't have base edit rights...

Thank you for the time...

If he's a CoH gamer he may not mind.

In the old days, a man liked the idea of many children, especially sons, with the fantasy that he can front his own basketball / hockey / baseball / football team.

And so, you can present this to him: "Honey, how would you like your own SuperGroup that can farm the Statesman Task Force?"

This is probably my second favorite fan video, after the "I Need a City of Heroes" one from long ago. Its cute, its a simple concept, executed well, and has a sense of humor.

(By the way, given that it was made without benefit of PvP setups, sophisticated demo editing, and at a time when most players did not even have a lot of high level characters yet, I Need a City of Heroes seems all the more amazing to me now than when I first saw it. Heck, when I first saw it, I recall not even knowing what the flaming monkeys were yet. Also, Bonnie Tyler is the only proper version of that song)
